Health Implications Of Homelessness: Reports From Three Countries, Gerald Daly Mar 1990

Health Implications Of Homelessness: Reports From Three Countries, Gerald Daly

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper discusses the health implications of homelessness in the context of problems discovered and remedies proposed in three countries: Britain, Canada, and the United States. The findings, particularly with respect to programmatic responses, are selective. Based upon personal observation over the past four years, they are intended, however, to offer a glimpse at the range of projects which have evolved in the three countries during the eighties.

Site-Directed Mutagenesis Of The Putative Processing Site Of Recombinant Human Immunodeficiency Virus Reverse Transcriptase, Susan M. Poppe Dec 1989

Site-Directed Mutagenesis Of The Putative Processing Site Of Recombinant Human Immunodeficiency Virus Reverse Transcriptase, Susan M. Poppe

Masters Theses

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the etiological agent of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). This retrovirus, encodes a RNA dependent DNA polymerase, reverse transcriptase (RT), which is essential to virus replication. Biochemical analysis indicated that RT is composed of 2 polypeptides of 66,000 and 51,000 daltons (p66 and p51) which combine to form a heterodimer. This heterodimer is thought to arise from the post-translational processing where p66 is made and either autocatalytic or proteolytic cleavage events result in a heterogeneous p66/p51. Site-directed mutagenesis was used at the proposed processing site to probe HIV-RT processing.

Cessation Of Chronic Ethanol Intake Reverses Ultrastructural Alterations In Ileal M Cells, Robert Rosback Eversole Aug 1989

Cessation Of Chronic Ethanol Intake Reverses Ultrastructural Alterations In Ileal M Cells, Robert Rosback Eversole

Masters Theses

Membranous (M) cells of the dome epithelium of ileal Peyer's patches have been shown to serve an antigen uptake function for mucosa associated lymphoid tissue. Hypergammaglobulinemia is a frequent accompaniment of chronic alcoholism in humans and the elevated antibody titers have been shown to be due in part to bacterial and dietary proteins. This study was conducted to demonstrate the morphological changes induced by chronic ethanol exposure in the ileal M cells in the rat.

Chronic ingestion of ethanol produces marked changes in the ultrastructure of M cells. All experimental animals showed distinct mitochondrial swelling with loss of matrix density, …

Street Children Programs In Latin America, Mark W. Lusk Mar 1989

Street Children Programs In Latin America, Mark W. Lusk

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The growing problem of street children is among the most important child welfare problems today. Estimates are that there are as many as 25 million street children in Latin America alone. This paper, which is based on over five months of fieldwork in Latin America, is a study of the problem of street children. Life on the streets is described in relation to the developmental stages of street children. The paper emphasizes the types of programs that have emerged as the countries of the region seek to ameliorate and prevent this social problem. A program typology is developed and discussed.

Behavioral Impacts Of The Fear Of Aids: A Sociological Model, Raghu N. Singh, N. Prabha Unnithan, James D. Jones Sep 1988

Behavioral Impacts Of The Fear Of Aids: A Sociological Model, Raghu N. Singh, N. Prabha Unnithan, James D. Jones

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The paper demonstrates the conceptual meaning and utility of a sociological model for identifying correlates of the fear of AIDS and its consequent changes on peoples' behaviors. A sociological notion of levels of analysis is employed for classifying correlates of AIDS' fears under structural and individual categories. A tentative list of these correlates and their projected relationship with peoples' fears is suggested to illustrate the model.

A Study Of Cell-Mediated Immunity During A Primary Infection With Pseudorabies Virus, John George Chosay Apr 1985

A Study Of Cell-Mediated Immunity During A Primary Infection With Pseudorabies Virus, John George Chosay

Masters Theses

This research defines the role and sequence of cell-mediated immune events in an in vivo virus infection. Pseudorabies virus infected CF1 mice lungs, were assessed by his to logical or immunohistochemical means. Using fluorescein isothiocyanate Tabled anti-T lymphocyte (ATG) and lissamine rhodamineB200 labeled anti-macrophage globulins (AMG), the number of lymphocytes and macrophages were determined. An early increase in T cells (four hours post-innoculation) was followed by an increase in macrophages (15 hours post-innoculation). Thereafter tissue levels of T cells and macrophages remained constant. Thymus dependent lymphocyte; failed to show increase macrophages clustering as pathology progressed. The first pathological changes in …

Research Issues Surrounding Holocaust Survivors: Adaptability And Aging, Benjamin J. Hodgkins, Richard L. Douglass Dec 1984

Research Issues Surrounding Holocaust Survivors: Adaptability And Aging, Benjamin J. Hodgkins, Richard L. Douglass

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The thesis of this article is that, in spite of a large body of literature on the subject, a significant need exists for sociological research on the long-term consequences of the trauma experienced by survivors of Nazi concentration camps. Most of what is known about the adjustment of Holocaust survivors is based upon limited case histories of survivors who sought psychiatric aid, or requested assistance in qualifying for indemnification payments from the German government. The social and psychological dynamics of successful adjustment to life after the traumatic Holocaust experience by the majority of survivors has largely been ignored. Reasons for …

The Welfare Crisis Of Central America, David Stoesz Jun 1984

The Welfare Crisis Of Central America, David Stoesz

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The crisis of Central America, fundamentally due to social injustice, is exacerbated as the Reagan administration seeks a "military polution" to political problems of the region. A humane approach to alleviating the devastating poverty of Central America necessitates reconciling two strategies of national development: a techno-economic strategy and a sociopolitical strategy. Both strategies leave important issues unresolved. The prospect of improving conditions for the people of Central America-diminishes as the region is increasingly militarized.

The Socio-Cultural Transformation Of Japanese Medical Systems, Takako Matsunaga Dec 1983

The Socio-Cultural Transformation Of Japanese Medical Systems, Takako Matsunaga

Masters Theses

Medical systems, just as other social institutions, are not stable and, thus, are subject to change. This essay is an analysis of the socio-cultural transformation of Japanese medical systems in general, and of the "health care system" of the cosmopolitan medical system in particular. No medical system is able to provide problem free medical care to any given population. Thus, the current health issues and changes in health seeking/enhancing behavior in contemporary Japan is examined as the reflection of the maladaptive nature of cosmopolitan medicine to its environment.

Going Among Them: The Evolution Of The Home Visit, Terry Holbrook Mar 1983

Going Among Them: The Evolution Of The Home Visit, Terry Holbrook

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The methods, motives and objectives of home visiting have been ignored by most social work historians, while the profession of social work has become almost universally associated with this practice by the public. This paper examines the historical, social, and political implications of home visiting from the founders of the profession to the present day, suggesting a revitalization of this taken for granted practice for the purpose of collecting "social evidence" to be used for social reform.

The Interrelationship Of Leader Self-Actualization And Life Stressors To The Resultant Incidence Of Reported Medical Problems Of Middle Management Educators, John S. Thatcher Aug 1980

The Interrelationship Of Leader Self-Actualization And Life Stressors To The Resultant Incidence Of Reported Medical Problems Of Middle Management Educators, John S. Thatcher

Dissertations

Schools, being a part of the larger social system, have not escaped the increasing pressures evident in our society. The principalship as an important component of the educational process has not enjoyed immunity from this same problem.

Because school principals are individuals, they react differently to life stressors. Some appear to have the ability to handle all stressors without suffering any onset of medical problems. Others appear not to have this immunity and as a result have medical difficulties. Because of this seeming difference and because of a lack of research of this type in education, the relationships between life …

An Examination Of The Red Blood Cell Alloantigentic System In The Chinese Hamster, Kathryn Elliget Blashfield Jan 1980

An Examination Of The Red Blood Cell Alloantigentic System In The Chinese Hamster, Kathryn Elliget Blashfield

Masters Theses

This research was done to determine whether any ABH-like blood group system was present in Chinese hamsters (Cricetulus griseus). The population of animals included 35 hamsters, 20 "normal" or outbred (10 males; 10 females) and 15 diabetic from The Upjohn Company's colony of inbred diabetic animals (8 males; 7 females; BE and BA lines). Animal sera and erythrocytes were compared by: hyperimmunization of rabbits (10 New Zealand White) with hamster erythrocytes; screening hamster erythrocytes and plasmas with human blood diagnostic typing antisera (Ortho Diagnostics), anti-H lectin, anti-A1 lectin and human red cells of various types; absorption and elution of …

Heroin--Myths And Knowledge: Impact On Public Policy, Robert Salmon Sep 1979

Heroin--Myths And Knowledge: Impact On Public Policy, Robert Salmon

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Public Policy in the United States towards the heroin user and addict has been punitive as well as unsuccessful in deterring drug use or in treatment of the addict. Bias, myths, and prejudices have influenced our policy stance and have made heroin addiction a more serious problem than it otherwise would have been. This is explicated in the article, and contrasted with the British system which in attitude and practice tends to view the addict as ill rather than evil.

Introduction

In modern man's attempt to understand human nature, two major modes of perceiving human experience, the humanistic and scientific, have often been in conflict. C.P. Snow labelled this dichotomy "the two cultures." As the power of science and accompanying technology have grown in the past forty years, the distance …

Teaching Reading To The Hearing-Impaired Child, Judy I. Schwartz

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The single most serious impediment to successful school achievement in general and to learning to read in particular is the deaf child's impaired language function.
