Adapting To A Challenging Fieldwork: Understanding The Ingredients, Emily Raphael-Greenfield, Ivettedari Miranda-Capella, Myra Branch Jan 2017

Adapting To A Challenging Fieldwork: Understanding The Ingredients, Emily Raphael-Greenfield, Ivettedari Miranda-Capella, Myra Branch

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

Two occupational therapy students were assigned to an inpatient psychiatric unit for their first Level 1 fieldwork. With limited on-site supervision provided, they looked to each other for peer support and collaboration in assisting one patient with severe depression who was considered the “sickest patient on the unit.” The students were able to work together and make a positive intervention with this patient despite their novice status. Understanding what each of them brought personally to this experience as well as the nature of their working relationship and their use of concepts taught in the classroom has important implications for occupational …

Blended Approach To Occupational Performance (Baop): Guidelines Enabling Children With Autism, Jordan M. Skowronski, Jack R. Engsberg

The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy

The performance of daily activities is impacted by motor impairments in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Research has recently demonstrated the prevalence and specificity of motor impairments in people with ASD. The motor learning of individuals with ASD is partially intact, and evidence suggests that a method to alter skill learning and repeated practice of motor sequences might be beneficial. Aiming to use this knowledge to guide occupational therapy interventions, initial guidelines for children with ASD blended Cognitive Orientation to daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) with virtual reality (VR) were created. An expert panel reviewed the initial guidelines. The results …

Surviving As A Cancer Survivor: A Case Report Of Radiation-Induced Autonomic Dysfunction, Daphne Sy, Mark Schauer

Research Day

While radiation and chemotherapy have achieved high rates of cure for Hodgkin lymphoma, the medical community is only now starting to characterize the long-term effects of treatment on these young cancer survivors, many decades later. Mantle radiation has been implicated in significantly increased cardiovascular risks, pulmonary fibrosis, other cancers, and thyroid disease over the patient’s lifetime. However, new syndromes are still being discovered within this population as they age. The purpose of this case study was to consider the unique health issues of cancer survivors, and how their treatment history should prompt us to broaden our differentials. Our patient presented …

An Out-Of-Core Gpu Based Dimensionality Reduction Algorithm For Big Mass Spectrometry Data And Its Application In Bottom-Up Proteomics, Muaaz Awan, Fahad Saeed Jan 2017

An Out-Of-Core Gpu Based Dimensionality Reduction Algorithm For Big Mass Spectrometry Data And Its Application In Bottom-Up Proteomics, Muaaz Awan, Fahad Saeed

Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports

Modern high resolution Mass Spectrometry instruments can generate millions of spectra in a single systems biology experiment. Each spectrum consists of thousands of peaks but only a small number of peaks actively contribute to deduction of peptides. Therefore, pre-processing of MS data to detect noisy and non-useful peaks are an active area of research. Most of the sequential noise reducing algorithms are impractical to use as a pre-processing step due to high time-complexity. In this paper, we present a GPU based dimensionality-reduction algorithm, called G-MSR, for MS2 spectra. Our proposed algorithm uses novel data structures which optimize the memory and …

Gpu-Pcc: A Gpu Based Technique To Compute Pairwise Pearson’S Correlation Coefficients For Big Fmri Data, Taban Eslami, Muaaz Gul Awan, Fahad Saeed

Parallel Computing and Data Science Lab Technical Reports

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive brain imaging technique for studying the brain’s functional activities. Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient is an important measure for capturing dynamic behaviors and functional connectivity between brain components. One bottleneck in computing Correlation Coefficients is the time it takes to process big fMRI data. In this paper, we propose GPU-PCC, a GPU based algorithm based on vector dot product, which is able to compute pairwise Pearson’s Correlation Coefficients while performing computation once for each pair. Our method is able to compute Correlation Coefficients in an ordered fashion without the need to do post-processing reordering …

The Promise Of Education 2017-2018, University Center For The Humanities

University Center for the Humanities Events

Education promises to be the key to a good life in the twenty-first century. College students often load up on debt only to graduate into an economy that does not offer enough high-paying jobs for them to prosper financially. Increasingly under scrutiny to produce quantifiable results, public school teachers and university professors struggle to define and defend the goals of liberal education and, especially, the value of the humanities. Journalists report and analysts of all sorts note the gap between expectations and realities. Even in a community inspired by the Promise, the promise of education can sometimes seem precarious. We …

Antegrade Endosteal Fibular Strut Augmentation For Periprosthetic Femur Fracture Above Stemmed Total Knee Arthroplasty, Tyler Snoap, Jason Roberts, Matthew Jaykel

Research Day

Abstract Title: ANTEGRADE ENDOSTEAL FIBULAR STRUT AUGMENTATION FOR PERIPROSTHETIC FEMUR FRACTURE ABOVE STEMMED TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY Abstract ID: 245 Abstract Category: Clinical Research Introduction:
The management of peri-prosthetics fracture around total knee replacements is technically challenging. The options for operative fixation become more limited if the femoral component is stemmed, which often is the case after revision arthroplasty procedures. The goals of surgery for peri-prosthetic fractures above knee replacements are to provide a rigid construct to promote healing, allow immediate knee range of motion, and allow weight bearing during the healing process.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study is to …

Feasibility Study To Assess Medical Student Visits To Developmentally Disabled Adults, Maria Mason, Brittany Chow, Xavier Jean, Sarah Khalil, Megan Cibulas

Research Day

Introduction The Probate Court of Kalamazoo appoints guardians to minors removed from the custody of their parents and to legally incapacitated or disabled adults. The state mandates that any child under age six placed into a guardianship be visited at least once a year to ensure proper care of the child, but there is no such mandate for the approximately 300 developmentally disabled (DD) adults under the care of the Probate Court. The purpose of this ongoing study is to determine the feasibility of annual visits to DD individuals conducted by volunteer medical students. Methods In this feasibility study, the …
