Introduction – Overview
In recent decades, there has been considerable attention devoted to the nature of interest group conflict and emerging structural changes in the American economic, social and political system. The economic changes have perhaps been the key indicators of emerging trends. These changes have been reflected mainly in the amount of economic activity and occupations devoted to services since the late 1950's; the increasing concern with technological growth; the close collaboration between national government policies and planning and the private sector; national governmental assistance for urban and suburban problems, and more recently, the increased mandates of interest groups …

Teaching Reading In The Secondary School: "The Fine Art Of Motivation", Kenneth Vandermeulen
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The most significant thing about motivation is that it is an intangible element in education. Its presence may only be sensed by the teacher. It does not come in units like ohms, ergs, decibels, or ounces. We're not even sure that its absence can be detected by objective measuring devices. Teachers, therefore, spend much less time studying and discussing motivation than they do in talking about programs, machines, testing instruments, and evaluation. The term motivation is frequently used by promotional representatives in describing an educational item on the market; the practice is much like the use of the term fidelity …

Liberal Arts And Livelihood: A Dual Design For Higher Education, George E. Lamore Jr.
Perspectives (1969-1979)
True, there have been exceptions, and every educator thinks he is one, but generally speaking, the Liberal Arts student or graduate is deeply confused, disappointed and frustrated. He is aware that his college has taught him to think, but not to be a person or to do a job. For education to neglect these dimensions of the heart and hands is to produce something more tragic than the multiple amputee. It is to produce a truncated head, absolved from personhood and detached from practicality.

This issue of Perspectives is devoted entirely to the proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Association for General and Liberal Studies which was held at Oklahoma State University, October 18 through October 20, 1973.
Concurrent Session 1
In order to present an idea of the course which the University of Utah has followed in regard to general education, Professor Gordon first read a portion of a paper which he had presented at a meeting of the American Association for Higher Education in 1970. See what he said in 1970, and then see what kind of prophet he was in …

Black Studies And The Enhancement Of Self-Concept As It Relates To Achievement Level In Negro High School Students, David L. Fisher
Dissertations
This study had as its primary purpose the investigation of the effect of black studies courses upon the self-concept of Negro high school students, Specifically, it was intended to determine if selfconcept enhancement followed completion of black studies courses and if this enhancement effect was further related to prior academic achievement, A secondary purpose was to determine if self-concept enhancement was related to the sex of the student, There were two subsidiary purposes. One was to see if different black studies courses had different effects upon the self-concept of the students and the other was to determine if the four …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Thus begins Poe's most famous poem, The Raven, which from its first publication in 1845 had an immediate and wide success such as no American poem had ever achieved. While the entire poem carries an air of inevitability-of the perfect wording that has to be as it is for my part I find none of it so unforgettable as those opening lines. Perhaps that may be simply because it is the beginning, but I hardly think so. Rather, for me it is a demonstration of how a rhythmical combination of harmonious words can charm us into belief in factitious imagery …
