Introduction and Conceptual Framework
The Purpose
Kalamazoo County, like much of southern Michigan in which it is located, is the locale for a unique type of rural settlement - the lakeshore dormitory community. These communities, located at inland lakes which were popular summer resorts in the early years of this century, have experienced stages of development unlike those of any other type of rural community. These stages and the historical events connected with them, have undoubtedly left visible impressions on the character of the present communities.

Black Families And National Policy, Andrew Billingsley
Black Families And National Policy, Andrew Billingsley
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
The family is both a source of society and a product of society. As a source of society the family produces individuals, values and a set of behaviors we call socialization which helps to build institutions which constitute the fabric of the larger society. As a product of society the family is highly influenced, conditioned and to a great extent determined by the forces which emanate from the institutional fabric of the larger society. Thus, what a family is, is to some extent determined by, influenced by, defined by the larger context of the society …

Social Workers, Immigrants, And Historians: A Re-Examination, Leslie Leighninger
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
As a profession frequently caught in a "middleman" role between society at large and specific client groups, social work is often charged with adjusting client behavior to societal demands, rather than working from the other end of the continuum. In terms of their relations with ethnic and minority groups, social workers are sometimes pictured as representatives of a dominant, white Protestant culture, acting, intentionally or unintentionally, as standard bearers for that culture among dissident minority groups. In light of this picture, the addition of courses like "Black Dor Chicano] Culture and American Social Work" to the social work curriculum appears …

The Potential For Application Of The Fluidized Bed In High Rate Waste Treatment, Bradley M. Mcclary
The Potential For Application Of The Fluidized Bed In High Rate Waste Treatment, Bradley M. Mcclary
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
A feasibility study of fluidized bed high rate - biological waste treatment was performed. Goals of the , investigation were to demonstrate possible advantages of higher treatment rates and compaction of effective reactor volume, and to compare this, system to conventional high rate treatment, in particular, activated sludge.
This system was found to be capable of achieving high rates of Boo 5 removal, producing a, consistent low concentration effluent. Such treatment could be realized in one-fifth the reactor volume required for conventional activated sludge, operating at an equivalent organic loading rate. Less sludge wasting occurred in this system operation than …

What liberalizing educational course or curriculum is good for a student? Will the student see the opportunity inherent in a course if it assumes a degree of comprehension he hasn't yet been educated to? Will it do him good if he can't or won't grasp it now?
Can colleges start all over at the existent level, give elementary training, and yet arrive at language mastery and disciplined thinking and esthetic sensitivity? Can we ask a chronologically mature matriculant to defer graduation until still later? Or are the lost quite lost?
If, then, a student is free to elect, with few …

Along with many other psychologists and sociologists, I am alarmed by the rapid increase in divorce rates. Toffler, in Future Shock, suggests one result of increasing technology might be the break up of the basic family unit. Gone are the days of the average couple meeting and settling down in the same town they have always lived in, surrounded by a secure and stable milieu. No longer are most women satisfied to take on the role of housewife, accepting their main responsibility as cleaning, cooking, and clothing their families. A marriage in our increasingly changing society is made up of …
