A Political Economy Critique Of The American Welfare State, Gerben Dejong
A Political Economy Critique Of The American Welfare State, Gerben Dejong
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Despite its rapid expansion over the last decade, the American welfare state appears unable to remedy many of the social problems it has been designated to solve. In many instances, the welfare state has become as much a part of the problem as the solution. Unfortunately, most proposals to reform the welfare state do not go beyond the liberalconservative conception of the welfare state as a backup to the capitalist market system. This conception of the welfare state is part of a larger comitment to a free market-pluralist ideology that singles out certain social phenomena as problematic and limits the …
Receiving Help: Management Strategies Of The Handicapped, Nancy A. Brooks
Receiving Help: Management Strategies Of The Handicapped, Nancy A. Brooks
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The social act of helping is presented from the recipient's viewpoint. Interview material from handicapped adults and contributions from the literature on helping provide insight to the helped person's management and interpretation of being helped. Techniques employed in the management of help are described. Alternative strategies and interpretations are available to the helped person; receiving help is not necessarily demeaning as social norms suggest. The interaction between helper and helped person is the central concern.

Parity, Family Size Preference And The "Value Stretch", Virginia Aldige Hiday, Steven Polgar
Parity, Family Size Preference And The "Value Stretch", Virginia Aldige Hiday, Steven Polgar
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
A two-wave survey of women in their reproductive years living in poverty areas of New York City is used to investigate family size preferences among the poor. The hypotheses that parity affects family size preference and that current parity affects future parity are supported. Implications for future trends in family size preference and for family planning programs are discussed.

A Model For Initiating Change In Large Social Systems, Richard E. Ault

The purpose of this study was to develop a model for introducing change in large social systems. The model was based on (1) a review of existing models, and (2) the analysis of a participant-observer study of an attempt at intraducing large system change. Organization Development was the focal change modality examined. It was intended that the model thus developed would be of utility to the practicing change agent in whatever field--education, social work, community development, government, unions, business, or industry.

Student Profiles And Factors Affecting Student Attrition And Persistence At The University Of Guam, Lorraine Constance Yamashita
Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to delineate several dimensions of the attrition problem at the University of Guam, to identify factors which were potentially contributory to the attrition problem and to provide information which could be used as a basis for institutional direction and planning.
Two subproblems were addressed in the study. The first subproblem was to develop a student profile, both academic and demographic, of those who withdrew and those who persisted. The second subproblem was to obtain and evaluate student views on attrition.

Determination Of The Rate Of Formation Of Hcn, Mitchell Hull
Determination Of The Rate Of Formation Of Hcn, Mitchell Hull
Honors Theses
Nitric oxide is a major air pollutant arising from fossil fuel combustion, yet the fuel contribution to its formulation is uncertain. Since, in combustion, fossil fuels undergo disintegration before oxidation takes place, the study of the pyrolsis of a model constituent of fossil fuels can shed light on NO formation. The rate of inert pyrolytic disappearance of pyridine and the rate of formation of the principal Nitrogen-containing pyrolytic product, HCN, was studied in an inert atmosphere. The rate constant for the formation of HCN and its temperature dependence were determined.
