The Worker/Client Relationship: Relevant Role Theory, Carlton E. Munson, Pallassana Balgopal
The Worker/Client Relationship: Relevant Role Theory, Carlton E. Munson, Pallassana Balgopal
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The historic concept of "friendly visitor" has blurred the distinction of professional and personal in worker/client relationships. Current social trends and social problems as well as recent theory applications in practice have made these distinctions harder to identify and maintain. Role theory can be used to analyze behavioral indicators of objective and subjective components of relationship.

Interagency Conflict, Power, And Sanctioning Systems: An Alaskan Example, Dorothy M. Jones
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The covert processes in the interagency system in Anchorage social services is the subject of this paper. The emphasis is on (1) conflicts between explicit goals of planning and rationality in social services and covert or hidden goals concerning protection of organizational jurisdiction; (2) the structure of interagency power; and (3) the socialization and regulation of member agencies' behavior. The data for the study derive from focused interviews with agency administrators and staff members and observations at community planning meetings. The major finding of the study is that the explicit goals of rationality, integration, and planning in social services are …

The Effects Of Anthraquinone On Kraft Pulping, Allison K. Noble
The Effects Of Anthraquinone On Kraft Pulping, Allison K. Noble
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Popel chips were cooked in Kraft liquor modified by anthraquinone (AQ). Ten trials with varying levels of AQ, white liquor and cooking time were completed. It was found that the percent yield decreased by as much as 10 points as the level of AQ was increased. But the Kappa number decreased by only 2 points at the maximum AQ level; therefore, at a consistant Kappa number, the percent yield for the unmodified Kraft pulp would be greater than the modified pulp. Overall pulp strength increased significantly with the addition of 0.05% AQ, as was evidenced by the improvement of strength …

Some Implications For Learning Centers, Mark E. Thompson
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
It should be quite clear from the research evidence that successful students tend to plan their work carefully, think ahead, are conscientious, independent, self-confident and recognize the importance of finding suitable conditions for effective study (Entwistle and Entwistle, 1970). Being able to organize, having a good self-image and being flexible are most important traits for students to have. For students that are handicapped in various ways, there is hope. Students can learn academic skills, if they have a good teacher and work to help themselves.

Chapter I
Introduction
Consistently increasing urbanization has been a salient characteristic of American society in the 20th Century. As more and more people have moved into cities, suburbs, and metropolitan areas, state and local governments have found it necessary to regulate the use of land through zoning legislation and zoning ordinances. New York City first enacted a comprehensive zoning ordinance in 1916.1 Since 1926, when the United States Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of zoning ordinances in the landmark decision of Euclid v Amber Realty Co,2 virtually every urban area in the nation has been subjected to zoning.

The Problem and Its Background
The Purpose
The purpose of this thesis is to examine factors leading individuals to participate in the laetrile movement. Laetrile, a substance obtained from a variety of foods including apricot kernels, has been termed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be both ineffective in the treatment of cancer, and even dangerous when taken in large amounts. Even so, over 50,000 people in the United States are estimated to use this substance for the control and prevention of cancer. They do so without the support of the orthodox medical profession, and may …

Climatic Change Considered As The Major Factor In The Abandonment Of The Grand Canyon Region, Paulette Fern Rayel
Masters Theses
Introduction
Grand Canyon National Park comprises 1009 square miles of contrasting life zones and landscapes, with elevations ranging from 2500 feet at the Colorado River to more than 9000 feet of the North Rim. This area includes 117 miles of the Canyon, part of the Kaibab Plateua known as the North Rim and part of the Coconino Plateau or South Rim. Both formations are included in the Colorado Plateau (See Figures 1 and 2).
Archaeological evidence indicates that prehistoric agriculturalists - the Cohonina peoples and later the Anasazi - resided in the area from circa A. D. 700 until A. …

Awareness And Usage Of Community Mental Health Services By Chicanos: The Effect Of Assimilation And Social Stratification, Fernando Munoz
Masters Theses
This is a study of the utilization of community mental health services by the Chicano population in a Western Michigan community. As members of the second largest ethnic minority group in the United States, the Chicanos are faced with many of the same social ills that plague other minorities. Discrimination, benign neglect, oppression, exclusion by institutions, poverty, high crime rate, alcoholism, physical and emotional disorder, and social disorganization are part of the everyday world of the Chicano. The inherent cultural vehicles, which Chicano culture uses in order to deal with the stresses associated with these social pathologies, will be explored. …

The Role Of Need Assessment In The Community Mental Health System, William K. Redmon
Masters Theses
Introduction
The general purpose of the present paper is to analyze community mental health services in Michigan with respect to the responsiveness of the system to the target community. In order to accomplish this goal, several variables must be considered.
First, historical precedents of the current mental health system will be examined to determine the responsibilities of the system to the citizenry. Both legislative mandates and informal recommendations will be reviewed. Second, the methodologies available for community need assessment and citizen-system communication will be summarized in terms of their utility for increasing citizen control of service planning. Third, an actual …
