Staging The York Creation, And Fall Of Lucifer, Clifford Davidson
Staging The York Creation, And Fall Of Lucifer, Clifford Davidson
English Faculty Publications
The Creation, and Fall of Lucifer by the York Realist was intended to provide a spectacular opening for the Corpus Christi cycle, of which the city of York felt very proud in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Since the York Realist appears to have been particularly sensitive to the conditions of production, this opening play provides a useful focus for attention to the staging used in the York cycle. The internal evidence of the Realist's Creation, and Fall of Lucifer demonstrates that he was not writing a mere literary exercise, but kept in mind the specifics of stage production.
Exclusion And Records: Another Threat To General Education, Raymond L. Chambers
Exclusion And Records: Another Threat To General Education, Raymond L. Chambers
Perspectives (1969-1979)
This paper is a brief examination of some of the arguments for and against two common practices in academia: excluding students who fail to maintain some minimum standard of progress and noting that failure on the student's record. It is concluded that the arguments in favor of both procedures are inherently wrongheaded: dangerous to both education and the larger society. A response to the unenlightened general public and their legislators, exclusion and therefore its notation should be eliminated. Instead a more fluid, timeless process of education should be developed. Students should be expected to master material , but not on …
Humanities In An Age Of Uncertainty, Norman Penlington
Humanities In An Age Of Uncertainty, Norman Penlington
Perspectives (1969-1979)
The substance of this paper was given at the recent (Oct. 1976) conference of the Association of General and Liberal Studies held at the College of Basic Studies , Boston University.
In the few minutes at my disposal what can I, who am approaching the end of my formal teaching career, tell you who are just beginning or who are midway? Although I have spent a lifetime finding my way in this age of uncertainty I can relate some useful teaching experiences.

Updating The Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary, Jerry L. Johns
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Word lists for reading instruction have long been of interest to educators. It has been noted by Johnson and Barrett (16) that over 125 word lists have been constructed during the past seventy years. Of these many word lists, there is little doubt that the Dolch list has received widest publication and use. Authors of texbooks on the teaching of reading (1, 8, 18, 23) have made reference to the Dolch list with suggestions for teaching the words. In addition, many reading materials have been developed to help teach these words in isolation and in context. Books have been written …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In order to achieve learning there must be a climate which encourages internalization of that which is being taught. This necessitates a consistently intimate relationship between the teacher and the pupils, which makes possible growth in curiosity, exploration, discovery and internalization of that knowledge as well as readiness and confidence for the implementation of that knowledge in other learning situations. In this way, the pupil actually uses that which he has learned in order to learn more, thus promoting the development of a unity encompassing teacher and pupil within the learning process and the learning experiences in which both participate.

Testing In The Arts: Aesthetic Perception Is A Part Of Human Intelligence, Warren Sylvester Smith
Testing In The Arts: Aesthetic Perception Is A Part Of Human Intelligence, Warren Sylvester Smith
Perspectives (1969-1979)
Simply stated like this , who would argue about it? The recognition of forms and patterns - visual or aural - the sensitive distinction among colors, the interpretation of movement or gesture - all of these are patently human accomplishments , and mastery of them is generally recognized as evidence of a kind of superiority. The statement would seem more commonplace than revolutionary.
But, as with many a principle honored in the abstract, putting it into educational practice would be revolutionary. Although the notion of measuring intelligence is no longer fashionable, our aptitude and achievement tests do imply two major …

A View On Three Days Of General Education Summary Address, Agls Convention, Cbs 1976, Francis L. Broderick
Perspectives (1969-1979)
While everybody shied away from defining humanities or liberal studies or 1 general education, some essential notions about these complex topics, so much a part of our lives and work, came through in what was said by us all. Let me try a couple of definitions. With appropriate nods to diffidence, let me just say flatly that the definition of the humanities should include at least the following elements: 1) centrality of concern on human beings rather than on structures of society or on the processes of nature; 2) attention to, probably focus on, the individual rather than the group; …

Humanism As Demystification, Alfred Mcclug Lee
Humanism As Demystification, Alfred Mcclug Lee
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Under a variety of labels, many academic disciplines focus on the unsettling impact of fresh and vivid interpersonal experiences upon pre-existing beliefs and behaviour patterns. Reference is to philosophical discussions of sophism and humanism, historical theories about frontier influences, anthropological interest in culture shock, psychiatric concern with empathy and with perceptive listening, and sociological analyses of marginality, uses of participant observation and life-history data, and clinical studies of social behavior. Their significant similarity is that they are all discussions of demystifying influences on social thought and action. They are demystifying in the sense that they tend to translate the distant, …

Chapter I
The Problem
Introduction
The traditional philosophy that a college-or a university is an exclusive institution in which only highly selected individuals receive a concentrated training in the traditional liberal arts no longer exists. In America, for instance, as early as 1870, Harvard, the colonial college with a narrow curriculum, was transformed rather rapidly into a modern university with many new subjects and the elective system (Garrett, 1949). Also, since 1642, when the first entrance requirements were instituted for American higher education, a continuing debate has developed over what constitutes a sound curriculum for education. There are those who …

A Comparative Study Of Campus Environments At Three Church-Related Colleges, William K. Stob
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate, compare and contrast the perceptions and expectations of second-semester freshmen in regard to several aspects of the campus environment at three church-related liberal arts colleges in western Michigan.
The review of the literature traced the origins and the development of private church-related higher education and outlined some rationale for the continuation of pluralism in American higher education. The review further indicated that church-related higher education appears to be caught in a period of self-doubt and uncertainty. Some studies have been conducted to assess the condition of church related higher education in America …

Relocation Of Vancouver's Chinatown Residents Under Urban Renewal, Richard Nann
Relocation Of Vancouver's Chinatown Residents Under Urban Renewal, Richard Nann
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Introduction. This is a study of the relocation patterns of Chinese-Canadian residents in an area undergoing urban renewal in Vancouver in the late 1960's. The study shows the inadequacies of simplistic social planning. The study indicates the need to understand the variety of responses to forced relocation, based on social class, the stage in the family life cycle and ethnicity. The study points out the different ways various families view the old neighborhood and the Chinese community as a whole, and, as part of this, how they view urban renewal. The study shows how housing and residential preferences relate to …

Gemeinschaft Vs. Gesellschaft In A Finnish New Town, Stanley F. Wiseman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
This article has a dual purpose: (1) to describe report on the creation and progress of one of the most famous New Towns, Tapiola, in Finland, and (2) to "operationalize" in this scene the dual concepts of Ferdinand Tbnnies' Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft, or al they have come to be identified modernly, cimunity and contract bureaucracy. (T~nnies, 1963:12-25) This approach is used because the major attempt in the world today to restore the peopleoriented element of Geeinschaft to local government is being taken in the New Town setting, and one of the most successful (according to …
