This study investigated the relationship between past performance and sources of motivation on team and self-efficacy of collegiate soccer players. The subjects of this study were 92 male collegiate soccer players who participated in MIAA competition in the fall of 1992. The issue was whether or not either of the diverse sets of performance appraisal criteria was more effective in improving performance than the other and whether or not base pay should be tied to the results of the performance appraisal system.
The methodology for this study was both quantitative and qualitative. The qualitative technique of content analysis was done on the sets of performance appraisal criteria to assess the extent to which each …

Since the implementation of PL 94-142, the Education for All Handicapped Children Act, over 4 million students have been identified as exceptional (Higgins, 1976). Of these children, 4.41% are placed in general education classrooms for at least part of their school day. The prior research evaluating the effectiveness of general education classroom placement has centered around instructional techniques. This study examined a different aspect of general education placement: study skills. "Gentle Student Bend Thine Ear To My Speech" An Essay About Sojourner Truth, Abolitionist And Feminist, Laura B. Somerville
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Sojourner Truth provides a powerful model of advocacy for the social work profession. This paper offers an analysis of this important historical figure that centers around the implications of being a doubly oppressed minority. An analysis of the nineteenth century chattel slavery system sets the stage for understanding the social environment. A brief biography of her life and evolution from enslaved chattel to feminist activist will highlight her social, spiritual, and personal development. Her philosophy, which is compatible with the modern feminist movement, is outlined by an analysis of her speeches.

Social Work Services And Social Work Training For African Americans In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1900-1930, Tawana Ford Sabbath
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The longstanding presence of African Americans in Philadelphia explains the establishment of social welfare institutions and agencies by more affluent African Americans in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Armstrong Association of Philadelphia and Women's Christian Alliance are two of the more prominent and enduring efforts initiated by African Americans to serve their own. Both also provided a vehicle for training for African Americans who desired to join the new profession of social work.

Holistic Analysis Of Basal Readers: An Assessment Tool, Arne E. Sippola
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Authors of contemporary basal readers make many claims as to the whole language-like nature of their programs. Their advertising literature contains assertions such as "full spectrum of the language arts," "literature based," and "integrated, whole language approach." Indeed many recent basals contain components that could be considered holistic in nature.

Generating Response To Literature With At-Risk Third Grade Students, Kathy Everts Danielson, Patty Tighe
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Response to literature is an important aspect of reading and comprehension (Hansen, 1987). As readers read quality literature they are more apt to respond in a personal nature to the text. Rosenblatt's (1983) response theory suggests that reading is a transaction between the reader and the text. It provides for the unique response to literature that an individual might have, depending upon the text and the context of reading.
