The Stable Poor And Criticism Of Poverty Area Agencies, Peter L. Heller, Maria Del Carmen Rivera-Worley, H. Paul Chalfant May 1979

The Stable Poor And Criticism Of Poverty Area Agencies, Peter L. Heller, Maria Del Carmen Rivera-Worley, H. Paul Chalfant

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

International and cross-cultural research concerning populations living in poverty have uncovered similarities in attitudes and behaviors associated with participation in society's institutional systems. One of these similarities is that feelings of alienation are an inevitable "reaction of the poor to their marginal position in a class-stratified, highly individuated, capitalistic society" (Lewis, 1966:21). These feelings, in turn, have led poor people in general to withdraw from participation in community life, including the community's institutions charged with the task of delivering services associated with physical welfare. The central task of this paper is to report findings that suggest that the degree of …

Introduction

In modern man's attempt to understand human nature, two major modes of perceiving human experience, the humanistic and scientific, have often been in conflict. C.P. Snow labelled this dichotomy "the two cultures." As the power of science and accompanying technology have grown in the past forty years, the distance …

Humanistic Biology: A General Education Approach, Alwynelle S. Ahl, Lawrence R. Krupka, Helen B. Hiscoe, Andrew Mcclary

Perspectives (1969-1979)

In modern man's attempt to understand human nature, two major modes of perceiving human experience, the humanistic and scientific, have often been in conflict. C.P. Snow labelled this dichotomy " the two cultures." As the power of science and accompanying technology have grown in the past forty years, the distance between the two cultures has widened. Reflecting concern about this cleavage, some scientists have attempted to incorporate humanistic perspectives and goals into science. In the area of biology, this humanistic concern is demonstrated by such groups as the Institute of Society, Ethics, and the Life Sciences (Hastings-on-Hudson) and its highly …

Disruptive Effect: A Phenomenon In Oral Reading, John W. Miller

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The major purpose of the present study is to examine the effect that an unknown word has on the oral reading of second grade children. Specifically, the study is concerned with the possible increased probability of error on words that are in close proximity to an unknown word. Additionally, the study examines the degree of disruptiveness created by unknown words in different grammatical positions, and the degree of disruptiveness of various types of unknown words.

Perspective On Youthful Deviance: Implications For Social Policies, Albert S. Alissi Jan 1974

Perspective On Youthful Deviance: Implications For Social Policies, Albert S. Alissi

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

The way a society deals with its younger deviants reflects the place assigned to youth in hat society. In his famous study of European family life, Phillippe Aries pointed out that for centuries children shared the same status as adults and were mixed with adults as soon as they were weaned from their mothers at about the age of seven. And so it was possible that in England in 1801, a child of thirteen was hanged for stealing a spoon. A girl of seven was publicly hanged in 1808 and a boy of nine was …

Theoretical. Perspectives On The Analysis And Development Of Social Policies, David C. Gil Oct 1973

Theoretical. Perspectives On The Analysis And Development Of Social Policies, David C. Gil

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the introduction:

The development of social policies, in American and in many other societies usually proceeds in fragmented fashion in relation to different substantive issues such as economic security, housing, education, physical and mental health, social deviance, child and family welfare, aging, intergroup relations, etc. The fragmentary-nature of processes of social policy formulation reflects their political nature and their roots in conflicts of real or perceived interests among diverse social groups. Were existing processes of policy development to result in social orders in which all members of a society could lead meaningful and satisfying lives, there would be …

Needed For The 1970'S: An Educational Policy For The Social Sciences*, Claude S. Phillips Jr.

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The list of efforts at intercultural education is almost limitless. The impact of these efforts has been so meager as to be startling. Conferences are still being convened to study the problem of how to incorporate intercultural studies into the educational system.
