Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxydation Of Hydroxy-Steroids And Studies On The Oxidation Of The 5’–Hydroxy Group Of Nucleosides, Carmen V. Zenarosa Dec 1969

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxydation Of Hydroxy-Steroids And Studies On The Oxidation Of The 5’–Hydroxy Group Of Nucleosides, Carmen V. Zenarosa

Dissertations

Introduction

In our earlier work we demonstrated the usefulness of the acidcatalyzed reaction between N-(p -tolyl)diphenylketenimine (21) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for the oxidation of secondary alcohols. This was exemplified by the oxidation of 2',3'-O-isopropylideneadenosine and other secondary alcohols.1 We have now extended this procedure to the oxidation of hydroxy-steroids.

Alkynylamines or ynamines can be written in two resonance forms: R-C≡C-N R'2 and R-C=C=NR'2. Because of the close similarity between the latter structure and the structure of a ketenimine (R2C=C=N-R') and the ability of sulfoxide-ketenimine to effect the oxidation of secondary alcohols, we …

The Phonics Quagmire, Bruce A. Lloyd Oct 1969

The Phonics Quagmire, Bruce A. Lloyd

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The quicksand of confrontation in phonics methodology has been the either-or dichotomy exemplified by the nature-nurture controversy of yesteryear. The proponents of heredity as the prime dictator of human growth and development had well-polished arguments for their position and so did those who believed in the preeminence of environmental factors. In the phonics controversy the oversimplification of viewpoint was equally clear-cut. Either we teach phonics as synthesis or we teach phonics as analysis, but we cannot do both. However, modern phonics instructional theory and practice indicates that perceptive teachers are taking both handles and doing just that up to a …

Just Who Is The "Mistaken Purist"?, Louis Foley

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Not long ago a reviewer of Wilson Follett's Modern American Usage quoted from that book as a sample of its "good advice" a declaration concerning adverbs. "The belief that adverbs should end in -ly is hard to down in the mistaken purist, and one often meets the tone of reprobation about the short forms. A newspaper will comment quizzically on the public authorities that have given outright approval to road-signs like 'Drive Slow.' "

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The first teacher of a child, for better or worse, is the parent or parents. Morally and legally, the responsibility rests entirely and completely upon their shoulders. The parents can be guided and counseled, but in the final analysis they must be prepared to take the credit for success or the blame for failure.

Kinetic Studies Of The Cell Elongation Phenomenon In Etiolated Pisum Stem Segments, Grant M. Barkley

Masters Theses

The short-term growth response of etiolated pea stem segments (Pisum sativum L., var. Alaska) was investigated using a high-resolution growth recording device. The immediate effect of treatment with indoleacetic acid (IAA) is an inhibition of growth. This inhibition lasts about 10 minutes and then the rate of elongation rises abruptly to a new steady rate about 4 times the rate of elongation before auxin treatment. This rapid steady rate of elongation, however, continues for only about 22 minutes before declining suddenly to a lower steady rate of growth about 2 times the rate of elongation before the addition of auxin. …

Homogenous Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Organic Compounds Using Rhodium-Triarylphosphine Complexes, Jack Lee Parsons Aug 1969

Homogenous Catalytic Hydrogenation Of Organic Compounds Using Rhodium-Triarylphosphine Complexes, Jack Lee Parsons

Dissertations

Introduction

The purpose of this research was to study the homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated organic compounds containing a wide variety of reducible functional groups. The catalysts to be used were rhodium complexes of triarylphosphines. It was also desired to develop these catalytic systems into practical synthetic methods for the reduction of unsaturated compounds.
