A Comparison Of Choice And Forced Alcohol Consumption And Alcohol Dehydrogenase Activity, David Bertsch Gray Apr 1970

A Comparison Of Choice And Forced Alcohol Consumption And Alcohol Dehydrogenase Activity, David Bertsch Gray

Masters Theses

Earlier studies using both mice and rats have revealed a significant, positive correlation between preference of alcohol concentration and activity of the liver enzyme, alcohol dehydrogenase. In this study two groups of Sprague- Dawley rats, matched for sex, were presented alcohol by either a choice or forced condition for three twelve day periods in a choice-forced-choice or forced-choice-forced sequence. Data were recorded as the amount of alcohol - consumed under each consumption condition. After the rats were sacrificed, their livers were removed and assays were made for the alcohol dehydrogenase activity. While several correlations between consumption and alcohol dehydrogenase activity …

Fourteenth Century Normans In West Africa, Kaye Louise Centers Mar 1970

Fourteenth Century Normans In West Africa, Kaye Louise Centers

Honors Theses

During the seventeenth century, a legend grew among the French which claims that during the reign of Charles V of France, a group of industrious and daring sailors of Normandy sailed to northwest Africa and then into the unknown waters of West Africa. By 1383 these Normans had reached the Gold Coast and had established a flourishing trade with the people there. This story seems very remarkable because it was not until the mid-fifteenth century that the Portuguese, under the direction and guidance of Prince Henry, ventured for the first time into West African waters and not until 1*4-86 that they …

A Plan To Improve Reading Instruction For The Superior Student In First Grade, Jo Ann Nieuwkoop Jan 1970

A Plan To Improve Reading Instruction For The Superior Student In First Grade, Jo Ann Nieuwkoop

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Teachers often become so concerned about children who are having difficulty that the needs of the superior students are neglected. Bright students often learn early to work independently; because of this, teachers "put them on their own." All of the students in the classroom need guidance in their development, but good readers need a different kind of guidance than that required for the average or slow learners. It is important for superior students to develop and mature physically, emotionally, socially as well as mentally so that they may become well developed personalities who will be better able to make worthwhile …

A Multi-Media Approach To Reading, Lucetta A. Johnson Jan 1970

A Multi-Media Approach To Reading, Lucetta A. Johnson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

As a new teacher in the Allegan Public Schools one of the primary goals for the year was to present reading activities to the children in as many interesting ways as possible to enrich their reading experiences. A multi-media approach was chosen to accomplish this goal and to encourage the children to love books. By multi-media approach (1) is meant an approach that uses as many printed and audiovisual forms of communication as possible. The program used consisted of the following media, which are by no means all that are currently available: Basal Readers, Library Books, Film Strips, Educational Television, …

Reading Readiness, Dorothy E. Smith, Joe R. Chapel Jan 1970

Reading Readiness, Dorothy E. Smith, Joe R. Chapel

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

One of the most difficult tasks facing the kindergarten or first grade teacher is to recognize the degree of readiness to read which her young students have attained by the time they face her on that first September morning. A great deal has been written on the subject of reading readiness, which is as it should be, since it is so important a subject. However, much that has been written is inaccurate, and most of it is incomplete.

Only In Our Learning-The Purpose Of An Academic Community, Harris L. Wofford Jr. Jan 1970

Only In Our Learning-The Purpose Of An Academic Community, Harris L. Wofford Jr.

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The search for truth is indeed the highest purpose of an academic community; it is truth as a question that can make man free. This is the vision without which people perish. Without it, we in our multiversities may win the world but lose our souls. Yet it is this basic idea of a community of scholars that is in clear and present danger.

Science & Technology In Education: What Kind Of A Marriage Is This?, Franklin G. Fisk Jan 1970

Science & Technology In Education: What Kind Of A Marriage Is This?, Franklin G. Fisk

Perspectives (1969-1979)

Science as a human activity can help give us answers to adequate technologies in the classroom, but only if the nature of the scientific enterprise is properly recognized for what it is: A human approach to the world of sense experience with certain definite but necessary biases involving the creative use of hypothesis and theory in conjunction with valid generalizations and accurate data. All this is science, man is a part of it, and I firmly believe that science is one of man's most successful attempts to understand the world in which he lives.

The Course Curse, Dale Porter Jan 1970

The Course Curse, Dale Porter

Perspectives (1969-1979)

The course is the backbone of American higher education. Curricula built around sequences or selections of courses are almost universal in our colleges and universities. Attempts to move outside the course structure are still regarded as experimental or as exceptions to the rule, and their achievements are not generally understood unless translated into the language of course requirements. For example, when students demanded the opportunity for political involvement in the November campaigns, university officials obliged them-with a course. When college teachers think of educational reform they think of changing the content or the scheduling of courses, or at most the …

Strength Properties Of Secondary Fibers Repulped Under Various Conditions, David J. Deyoung Dec 1969

Strength Properties Of Secondary Fibers Repulped Under Various Conditions, David J. Deyoung

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

The inability of fibers to swell to their original extent is probably the largest single factor contributing to strength losses of repulped fibers. This lack of swelling lessens the number and strength of fiber to fiber bonds in the sheet formed. It is this fact which leads to the decreased mullen, tensile and stretch of the sheet, and the increased tearing resistance. This paper is a study of the effects of temperature, pH and surfactants on the strength properties of secondary fibers. It was shown that a surfactant is very detrimental to strength properties. While not affecting some strength properties, …

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxydation Of Hydroxy-Steroids And Studies On The Oxidation Of The 5’–Hydroxy Group Of Nucleosides, Carmen V. Zenarosa Dec 1969

Dimethyl Sulfoxide Oxydation Of Hydroxy-Steroids And Studies On The Oxidation Of The 5’–Hydroxy Group Of Nucleosides, Carmen V. Zenarosa

Dissertations

Introduction

In our earlier work we demonstrated the usefulness of the acidcatalyzed reaction between N-(p -tolyl)diphenylketenimine (21) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) for the oxidation of secondary alcohols. This was exemplified by the oxidation of 2',3'-O-isopropylideneadenosine and other secondary alcohols.1 We have now extended this procedure to the oxidation of hydroxy-steroids.

Alkynylamines or ynamines can be written in two resonance forms: R-C≡C-N R'2 and R-C=C=NR'2. Because of the close similarity between the latter structure and the structure of a ketenimine (R2C=C=N-R') and the ability of sulfoxide-ketenimine to effect the oxidation of secondary alcohols, we …
