Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
"Anyone can read" is the attitude of some people, even people who should know better. The fallacy of such an attitude is realized with the following analogy. Aristotle is known to have said, "One learns to be a good flute player by playing the flute. One also learns to be a poor flute player by playing the flute." In the same way, one learns to be a good or poor reader by reading.

The social worker of today is being placed in situations which call for him to devise new tools and strategies of intervention which are relevant to present day problems. It is recognized that many of our current social problems are inherent in some of our institutions and that only by changing these institutions can real results be achieved. Problems arise due to the fact that these institutions often stringently resist change and conventional methods employed by professional practitioners have often only been able to solve or ease individual difficulties or maladustments. There have been a growing number of social workers …

An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Instructional Emphasis Of Two Filing Textbooks Commonly Used In Secondary Schools And Their Relation To The Filing Procedures In The Business Office, Patricia Ann Skinner
Masters Theses
This study compared the instructional material in two textbooks commonly used for high school filing instruction with the perceptions of records supervisors and office practice teachers.
A questionnaire was designed for each of the two major groups of respondents. Usable survey instruments were completed by supervisors of 67 offices in the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph area and office practice teachers in the 13 high schools in the same geographic area.
While the records supervisors and office practice teachers were in agreement on a number of points relating to the filing process and instructional emphases (using a rank-order mismatch formula), they were …
Successive Discrimination Reversal Learning In The Rat Offspring As A Function Of Maternal Stress During Gestation, Miles A. Kowall
Successive Discrimination Reversal Learning In The Rat Offspring As A Function Of Maternal Stress During Gestation, Miles A. Kowall
Masters Theses
This paper itself with the effect of prenatal stress on the learning ability of the offspring, parental emotionality on learning ability, and how these two factors interact. Female animals were categorized as either high or low emotional by measures in the open field and then further divided into shock or no-shock groups. This provided the stress condition. All females were stressed during pregnancy. Cross fostering and fostering techniques were used to provide more stringent control measures so as to be able to extrapolate prenatal influence from post natal artifacts. This resulted in a 2X2X3 analysis of variance matrix with error …

Representatives In Government - A Role For Social Planning Councils , Alan Cohen
Representatives In Government - A Role For Social Planning Councils , Alan Cohen
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
I have referred to a key problem of how to make individual and group concerns known to the decision makers without ignoring the weakly organized and unorganized-and without putting both the legislators and administrators in the position of merely ratifying bargaining negotiated between these interest groups. I have suggested non-governmental Social Planning Councils have a potentially significant role to play in the changing need for representativeness for the myriad of strong, weak and unorganized groups and individuals.
This role recognizes the feedback benefits resulting from the proposition that people learn to participate by participating, and …

Teaching Reading In The Secondary School: "The Fine Art Of Motivation", Kenneth Vandermeulen
Teaching Reading In The Secondary School: "The Fine Art Of Motivation", Kenneth Vandermeulen
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The most significant thing about motivation is that it is an intangible element in education. Its presence may only be sensed by the teacher. It does not come in units like ohms, ergs, decibels, or ounces. We're not even sure that its absence can be detected by objective measuring devices. Teachers, therefore, spend much less time studying and discussing motivation than they do in talking about programs, machines, testing instruments, and evaluation. The term motivation is frequently used by promotional representatives in describing an educational item on the market; the practice is much like the use of the term fidelity …

Using Teacher Observation For Diagnosing Reading Problems, Wilma H. Miller, Ottilie Womack
Using Teacher Observation For Diagnosing Reading Problems, Wilma H. Miller, Ottilie Womack
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article discusses the values of using teacher observation as a diagnostic technique and illustrates how a teacher can be more effective in the diagnosis of reading problems. The article discusses using cumulative records and several different types of checklists as useful aids to teacher observation. Some of the checklists discussed are extremely valuable in locating a child's specific reading difficulties, but are not widely known by many elementary teachers.
A List Of Basic Sight Words For Older Disabled Readers, Jerry L. Johns
A List Of Basic Sight Words For Older Disabled Readers, Jerry L. Johns
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The Dolch basic sight vocabulary of 220 words has generally been recognized by reading authorities as a valuable asset to reading instruction. Research by Dolch (1941), Fry (1960), and Zintz (1966) and Johns (in press) has shown that the 220 words comprising the Dolch list represent 50 to 75 per cent of all school reading matter in the elementary grades. According to Dolch, these 220 words are recognized instantly by good second-grade readers and by average third-grade readers.
Reflections On General Education, Ollin J. Drennan
Reflections On General Education, Ollin J. Drennan
Perspectives (1969-1979)
Life is a series of events into which an individual enters, modifying each event by his memory and his expectations. Each of us finds ourselves involved in all the things that happen to us almost as though we were observers standing aside and watching as well as participating. Through our culture we learn to separate our thinking about our lives from the living of them. Often our living seems to flow inescapably and inevitably along and all we can do is learn to understand the more important parts of it. That we might affect the way that flow of events …
Shifting Ideals In Higher Education, Frederick F. Ritsch
Shifting Ideals In Higher Education, Frederick F. Ritsch
Perspectives (1969-1979)
If a controlled equalitarian democracy is a real or even a present danger in higher education, then those in the academic professions should move now to at least clarify the meaning of a higher education. This could mean a much greater vigilance with regard to what is included under the heading of a university degree; it should certainly mean reconsideration of some areas which now receive higher education validation. It would mean our classrooms be less concerned with reinforcing the immediate than with the identification and elaboration of new and more productive modes of living. It would demand that higher …

Tarrant County Junior College's Program Of General Education, Charles N. Johnson
Perspectives (1969-1979)
This issue of Perspectives is devoted entirely to the proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Association for General and Liberal Studies which was held at Oklahoma State University, October 18 through October 20, 1973.
Concurrent Session 3
I hate to start out on a negative note, but I must say that it is entirely possible (and I'll include our programs at Tarrant County Junior College) that community colleges have probably never tried general education. General education, of course, has many interpretations and definitions, but the one I'm speaking of we haven't yet tried.
The Presence And Promise Of The New Consciousness, Benjamin Mehrling
The Presence And Promise Of The New Consciousness, Benjamin Mehrling
Perspectives (1969-1979)
The counter culture controversy-that is, the claims and denials over the arrival of a new kind of person, a new breed, a new sensibility- widely discussed in the late sixties, has reached a new level of intensity. The critics are now taking the initiative, putting forward arguments intended to show either that the youth movement has been faddish, ladened with contradictions, and a luxury of the "elitists," or that it never did exist except in the imaginations and wishes of its identifiers and "discoverers."
I believe the critics have largely failed to take into account just what the discoverers of …

Jonathan Harvey Coxgull: An Experiment In College Teaching, Francis L. Gross Jr.
Perspectives (1969-1979)
As a postscript I might add that my description of our classroom was not a chance prescript to this essay. It was intended as a symbol. It is a symbol of impersonality and sameness. My students study and live and eat in a decor similar to that room. There are roughly 20,000 of them at my school. They are strangers both to me and to each other on the first day of class each semester. If I am to get them to share experiences, and hence to aid each other in the learning process, I must somehow be an agent …

Reading Tests Don't Really Tell It Like It Is, George D. Masters
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Reading, at one time the hallmark of the educated man, is now the bugbear of the modem school. In other ages it was recognized that there were some children who didn't want to read, never wanted to read, and never would want to read. Today, such a student is spurred, goaded, and hounded till he either learns to read for self preservation, drops out of school, or confronted with failure, lets the world see the only R's he has learned, the wrong R's-resistance, rejection, and rebellion.
