Bach's B Minor Flute Sonata: A Study Of Six Recorded Interpretations, Edwin F. Sabrack Jr.
Bach's B Minor Flute Sonata: A Study Of Six Recorded Interpretations, Edwin F. Sabrack Jr.
Masters Theses
The lack of knowledge and understanding of the performance practice of the early eighteenth century can lead to faulty and ill-conceived ideas regarding the interpretation of Bach's flute
sonatas. Problems of tempo, articulation, phrasing, dynamics, and ornamentation can overwhelm the student approaching these works for the first time. Luckily, the great flutists of our time have
given us a permanent documentation of their interpretations of this music by committing to record their performances. A diligent study of these performances, (in this case, the Sonata in B Minor), can guide the student to make intelligent decisions for his own playing of …

Try A Fresh Look At A Trite Subject, Louis Foley
Try A Fresh Look At A Trite Subject, Louis Foley
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Recently, a distinguished literary critic, speaking of the "rotten writer," said that such a person is convinced that all rules of grammar are obsolete, "now that the split infinitive has earned acceptance." 1 It is not altogether clear whether the latter part of that statement is merely intended to represent the opinion of the "rotten writer" or whether the critic himself accepts it as a foregone conclusion. In either case the wording is rather captious and unrealistic. How can the split infinitive be said to have "earned acceptance"? It has no earning power. It is not an active entity in …

Reading In The Secondary School: Teaching Vocabulary, The Affective Domain, Kenneth Vandermeulen
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
If a high school should do anything, it should help students to think clearly, communicate effectively, and understand themselves with some degree of maturity. Language is that "yellow brick road" to those goals. It is the means of understanding one another, it is the single basic tool of thought. Obviously, students who are not able to understand more than basic English will have to think and communicate under a severe handicap, which in tum must have adverse effects on self-concept. Students coming out of high schools are proving less and less capable of reading the materials they must understand in …

The Significance Of Ethnicity In Staffing Corrections, Alfred J. Kutzik
The Significance Of Ethnicity In Staffing Corrections, Alfred J. Kutzik
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Excerpt from the full-text article:
Until recently the total thrust of efforts to improve the staffing of corrections has been towards the recruitment and development of trained personnel. In the past decade it has begun to be recognized that factors other than training have to be taken into account. Largely as a result of California's groundbreaking Community Treatment Project the personality of staff is now considered by some to be as important as their training and in a few programs those with certain types of personality and training have been assigned to work, i.e., "matched", with juvenile offenders who have …

The Great Potato Debate, James D. Hudson
Honors Theses
Anencephaly and spina bifida cystica are two of the most common severe congenital malformations consistently observed in human populations. Both represent defects in the neural tube and share a significant number of similar epidemiological associations among them, occupational class, geography, sex ratio, maternal age, year and season of the year. In anencephaly most of the brain and upper skull never form usually resulting in death within a few hours of birth. Spina bifida cystica is a malformation of the spinal cord often causing paralysis, vulnerability to infection, and early death. In 1972, Dr. J.H. Renwick presented a controversial hypothesis which …
