Computer Technology - 1984 And Beyond, Terry Holbrook
Computer Technology - 1984 And Beyond, Terry Holbrook
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article examines the impact of computerization on record keeping. Particularly important about automated records is that their content becomes reified, thereby distorting the nature of client data. Because the technical side of documenting a client's activities is stressed, the existential nature of behavior is obscured. As a result, a practitioner may not gain much insight into the motives and social situation of a client. Yet without this information, irrelevant advice may be prescribed by a social worker. Accordingly, technology must not be allowed to alter the existential process of creating a client's biography in a record.

Social Service Delivery Systems: The Impact Of Technology And Organizational Structure, Louella Mann
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Changes in work and social structures are reviewed for the period from the early industrial era to the present. Work structure is hypothesized to have a significant impact upon society and the individual. The structure of the modern work setting and the rapid changes in technology have increased the stress associated with anxiety and isolation. In turn, these problems contribute to the onset of social ills. Also examined are ways to diminish the negative effects of the role conflict which results from the divergent structures present in the personal and work settings. Predictions about the future of social service delivery …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Just as a lesson can fail because of poor planning, so can a conference. To avoid this, the teacher must make some preliminary decisions. The teacher must first decide the purpose of the conference. According to Hunter (1976), there are three types of conferences and each type serves a different purpose. These types include giving information, receiving information and problem solving. We are now ready to enter the first phase of the conference.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Jenkins, et al (1980) asked 17 good and 17 poor third grade readers to pronounce nonsense words such as clide, sarwinky, and weapadoot in isolation. They found that the good readers were significantly more flexible in their attempts than were the poor readers, many of whom either continuously repeated a pronunciation or gave one that was entirely unrelated to the key word. Even though given repeated opportunities to correctly pronounce these words, poor readers as a group didn't change each pronunciation or think of reasonable alternatives.

Eager, bright eyed children gather close around the teacher's chair, where she holds several enticing books. In this multiethnic class she makes very sure that Juanita, Pablo, and Kim, who know little English, are seated close to her where they can point to pictures and hear her words clearly. The teacher begins with The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the children giggling as he eats his way through "One red apple", "Two yellow pears", etc. While the story is reread the children join in chorus as different pupils point to the pictures. The teacher continues with Teddy Bears One to Ten, Ape …

Reading Role Models: Fictional Readers In Children's Books, Dee C. Storey
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Teachers and librarians know how important reading role models are in fostering a positive attitude toward books. This crucial aspect of a child's education should go beyond decoding and comprehension to encompass a true enjoyment of reading. Educators also hope that youngsters will value literature for what it is and what it has to offer. Such a mind set is frequently incubated at home and further developed early on in the elementary grades.

The Statistical Analysis Project is a computer program that interacts with a person to discover the type of statistical test that person should use. Essentially, this program is intended to assist students, faculty and researchers in choosing the correct statistical procedure to use in a particular situation. For example, there are many different types of tests a person can use to test the mean of data but each test is used in a different situation. This program will tell you which test to use based on the situation you give it. This project was started by Anika Forsblad in 1985.

Microencapsulation As An Alternative To Emulsification For Preparing As A For Use In Papermaking, William J. Corriveau
Microencapsulation As An Alternative To Emulsification For Preparing As A For Use In Papermaking, William J. Corriveau
Masters Theses
The sizing chemical ASA is emulsified to make i t compatible with the papermaking process. Unfortunately, emulsified ASA is chemically reactive with water at the elevated temperatures found in papermaking systems. As an alternative, encapsulated ASA was made and investigated for its stability towards water at elevated temperatures.
A handsheet procedure was developed to analyze emulsified and encapsulated ASA. It was concluded that the procedure gave statistically reproducible results. Investigations with the procedure revealed important variables concerning the laboratory and m ill application of ASA. Evidence indicated that retention of ASA was critical to sizing development.
Encapsulated ASA made for …
Feminist Theory And Social Policy Or Why Is Welfare So Hard To Reform?, Dorothy C. Miller
Feminist Theory And Social Policy Or Why Is Welfare So Hard To Reform?, Dorothy C. Miller
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
More than 10 years ago Henry Aaron wrote a classic paper entitled "Why Is Welfare So Hard to Reform?" (1973). This paper answers that question from the perspective of the new discipline of Women's Studies. The author suggests that the use of feminist theories; notably those of Hartsock and Chodorow; can further one's recognition and understanding of male bias in social policy development. Tracing the history of U.S. welfare policies for women and children the analysis provides explanations for the differential treatment of women in the welfare system and the failure of work strategies to increase poor women's economic independence. …

Addressing Socio-Legal Problems: A Unifying Perspective For Social Workers, Raymond Albert
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Problems where social work and the law overlap have consistently challenged social work professionals, and the challenges promise to continue. The overlap exposes important interdisciplinary issues, which are best addressed when certain conditions are met. The article describes these conditions within the context of a perspective that underlines the interaction between the two fields and structures the professional's approach to these interdisciplinary problems.
Implementation And Meta-Evaluation Of An Experimental Method For Evaluating An Administrator Training Program, Nancy B. Larsen
Implementation And Meta-Evaluation Of An Experimental Method For Evaluating An Administrator Training Program, Nancy B. Larsen
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to operationalize, test, and assess the utility, feasibility, propriety, and accuracy of the "success case method." A review of the literature revealed that although evaluation is presently being conducted in educational training programs, it is often not practical nor cost-effective. The Kirkpatrick model for evaluation provided the conceptual framework for viewing evaluation of training. A training managers' interview questionnaire was developed to elicit perceived changes in trainees' performance after training. Nine success cases, selected from a group of 37 administrators, were interviewed by telephone 2 weeks after the training. Selection criteria and procedures were …

One County's Experience With Community Corrections: An Assessment Of The Harm, Charles C. Crider
Masters Theses
Most correctional systems include pre-parole community placements. This study followed 114 inmates released to halfway house placement in one Michigan county over six years to determine the harm these inmates inflicted on the host community through new crime during halfway house placement and for three years following parole. Their criminal behavior was compared to statistical expectancies of criminal behavior for similar risk parolees. In a second analysis, the volume and seriousness of their criminal behavior was compared with non-comparable parolee controls. In both analyses, the extent and seriousness of crime by experimentals were comparable to that of controls. Criminal activity …

Experiment 1: The reaction of various glutaconaldehyde salts (Na+ or K+) with glycosyl isothiocyanates has resulted in the formation of a novel class of compounds. Relatively mild conditions were utilized for the synthesis which occurs in four steps, and in good yield, starting from glucpseptentaacetate. These reactions were found to be regiospecific. The unique physical and spectral properties of the model compound 1-(2,3,4,6-tetra-0-acetyl-β-D-glycopranosyl)-2-thiono-3-pyridine carboxaldehyde are also discussed.
Experiement 2: Early synthetic methodologies have recently been utilized in the synthesis of 4-aryl-2-oxytetronimides. These compounds have been found to participate in condensation reactions with various substituted o-phenylene diamines. A …

Direct Memory Acquisition Of Fast Analog Signals, Syed Javaid Iqbal
Masters Theses
A fast data transfer computer circuit is developed using the direct memory acquisition (DMAC) technique. For this purpose Z-80 microcomputer ·chips, manufactured by Ziolog, were used. The direct memory acquisition circuitry was developed in several stages and required both hardware and software development. An erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) programmer was built for reading and loading the system program. The design, construction, and testing of the DMAC system are discussed in detail and an example of the use of this system for collecting data is given.

The Use Of Electrical Resistivity To Delineate A Brine Contamination Plume In The Walker Oilfield, Kent County, Michigan, Kent E. Meisel
Masters Theses
Contamination of groundwater with oil field brines was reported in the Walker Oil Field, Michigan. An electrical resistivity survey utilizing the Vertical Electrical Sounding method was conducted to test the method as an exploratory tool for delineating brine contamination in glacial deposits. The method was successful in defining the subsurface geology and delineating a shallow, confined aquifer, but the presence of extensive, conductive clays effectively masked the presence of brine contamination. The method was shown to be an effective exploratory tool for shallow investigations.
