Jacobi Moments In Applied Mathematics With Computer Applications, John A. Kapenga
Jacobi Moments In Applied Mathematics With Computer Applications, John A. Kapenga
Dissertations
This work provides solid asymptotic representations, sharp error bounds and stable recurrence methods (both three term and two dimensional) for the Jacobi moments. These moments are currently used in several areas of numerical analysis (numerical integration, integral equations and boundary value problems).
A powerful representation theorem, due to H. Gingold, which uses the Jacobi moments is extended and analyzed. Applications of this theorem to multi-turning point problems and several other areas are given.
For a number of important problems in mathematical physics it is not possible to prove that the currently employed methods of solution converge, or are valid in …
Performance Of Brain Dysfunctional And Non-Dysfunctional Subjects On The Bip And A Multiple-Choice Bip With Varying Degrees Of Background Interference, Michael Joseph Ezzo
Performance Of Brain Dysfunctional And Non-Dysfunctional Subjects On The Bip And A Multiple-Choice Bip With Varying Degrees Of Background Interference, Michael Joseph Ezzo
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the visual and motor behavior of brain dysfunctional patients and the effects of varying the line density on the Background Interference Procedure for the Bender-Gestalt (BIP). Various claims have been made for the increased diagnostic accuracy of the BIP over the regular Bender-Gestalt, yet few investigations have been conducted to explore the BIP phenomenon. A model for the process of drawing geometrical figures was proposed in hopes of clarifying how this procedure and others intervene in the graphomotor task.
The original BIP paper was considered to have lines of single-density. A transparency …
Physiological Differentiation And Cognitive Discrimination Of An Olfactory Stimulus Produced Under Stress, Robert Gray Perra
Physiological Differentiation And Cognitive Discrimination Of An Olfactory Stimulus Produced Under Stress, Robert Gray Perra
Dissertations
Humans may have ability to transmit, receive, and react to biological information from other humans through olfactory chemosensory communication. Two studies examined human (1) ability to differentiate physiologically, via olfaction, fresh stress produced sweat and (2) cognitive discrimination, through smell, of "aged" stress produced sweat. Four stress conditions were employed; (1) exercise, (2) relaxation, (3) sexual arousal, and (4) repulsion.
Experiment I. A male dyad participated--donor and recipient. Donor was prepared to collect his axillary secretion on gauze; following preparation donor was stressed. After stressing, the gauze which was presumed to contain a fresh non-odoriferous sweat, was removed, sandwiched between …
Relationship Of Admission Variables To Success For Licensed Practical Nurses In Associate Degree In Nursing Ladder Program, Sally Kathryn Johnson
Relationship Of Admission Variables To Success For Licensed Practical Nurses In Associate Degree In Nursing Ladder Program, Sally Kathryn Johnson
Dissertations
The problem and challenge for nurse educators in Practical Nursing/Associate Degree Nursing (PN/ADN) ladder programs is to identify admission criteria for Licensed Practical Nurse (PN) applicants entering the advanced standing level. The selected admission criteria should include those which are most likely to indicate success in the program and on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). Identifying such criteria would promote the most efficient use of scarce educational resources and help avoid loss of time, energy and financial resources for potential nursing students.
The records of 79 LPNs who entered a PN/ADN ladder program at the advanced …

Perceptions Of American College Students About Arabs: The Role Of Mass Media And Personal Contact In The Formation Of Stereotypes, Mansour Owaid Aljeaid
Dissertations
American students, as well as people of other nations, form perceptions of others who differ from their own cultural, racial, and social groups. These mental pictures are "stereotypes."
The purpose of this study was to identify stereotypes that American students enrolled at Western Michigan University (WMU) had about Arabs and to determine if there were differences in these stereotypes when students were classified by race, sex, level of education, age, and sources of stereotypes. Twenty-five bipolar adjectives were organized as semantic differential scales to assess students' perceptions. The instrument was either mailed or hand delivered to a sample of 400 …

Masters Theses
Numerical computer programs were developed to calculate the classical elastic scattering orbits, deflection functions and differential scattering cross-sections for a heavy-ion nuclear reaction model.
Critical points of the deflection functions and differential scattering cross-sections were examined.
Semiclassical modifications were developed for future study to account for the phase relation between independent orbits that lead to the same scattering direction.
Hydrodynamic Character Of The Dundee Limestone In The Central Michigan Basin, Ann Carol Little
Hydrodynamic Character Of The Dundee Limestone In The Central Michigan Basin, Ann Carol Little
Masters Theses
The Middle Devonian Dundee Limestone underlies most of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. A potentiometric surface constructed of the formation, utilizing pressure data was compared to local and regional structure, permeability trends, specific gravity of the brines, oil accumulations, and surficial topography.
The data were distributed mainly in the central basin area, with information becoming more sparse around the basin margins. This created difficulties in the determination of the extent of control imparted by each of the factors, in flow direction. Surficial topography, on a regional scale, is likely the most influential of the controls, with the Dundee Limestone brines …

Data were also collected on social …
Reactive Counterion Surfactant Catalysis Of Hydroxamic Acid Hydrolysis With Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Mohamed El-Sayed Ayoub
Reactive Counterion Surfactant Catalysis Of Hydroxamic Acid Hydrolysis With Perfluorooctanoic Acid, Mohamed El-Sayed Ayoub
Masters Theses
A micellar effect upon the rate of hydrolysis of hydroxamic acids in aqueous perfluorooctanoic acid has been demonstrated for hydroxamic acids with chain lengths of six , eight, and ten carbons. In this system the counterion, hydrogenion, is a catalyst. Typical rate constant-surfactant concentration profiles for micellar catalysis were obtained. The results for these hydrolyses are consistent with the pseudo-phase model for micellar effects.
In addition the Arrhenius activation energies were determined for the reaction of octanohydroxamic acid at surfactant concentrations above and below the critical micelle concentration of the surfactant. The activation energy is lower for reaction in the …

Teaching/Learning: The Student Viewpoint, Bruce A. Lloyd, Rosa C. Lloyd
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Learning is a vital aspect in the life of every individual. To some it comes, easily, but to others it does not. Why this happens depends on several interrelated factors. Among them are home environment and parental support, individual capabilities/potential including mental maturity and personal drive, and school/educational classroom methodology or procedures. The latter point is the focus of this paper.

Our Daughter Learns To Read And Write: Looking Back, Marcia Baghban
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
I enjoy reminiscing about our earliest years with Giti and her language learning. My husband, Hafiz, and I were graduate students at Indiana University and interested in everything there was to know about life. When I found out I was pregnant, I never doubted that our child would read. I had spent entire days in my childhood whipping through piles of library books and swapping Nancy Drew and Judy Bolton books with cousins. My husband had taught himself to read under the most miserable of circumstances, and begged for paper and pen in a Central Asian village where neither could …

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The present study is a program evaluation designed to evaluate an elementary school remedial reading instructional program using Carr's model (1982) of reading ability. The "Learning to Read Better" program evolved from Anes' (1979a, 1979b, 1981) study and experience In teaching children with reading problems. The program is structured according to the components of the reading process, with time in the reading room and teaching responsibility allocated so that learning in each component occurs during every remedial session. Four key components of the reading process emphasized in this program are: visual-perceptual training, decoding, oral reading, and comprehension.

Prison Education, Joseph Behar
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
College level education is provided by the John Jay College of Criminal Justice to inmates on site at the Riker's Island Correctional Facility in New York City. This undergraduate satellite program is examined in relation to the opportunities for de-institutionalization, re-socialization, and possible effects on "prisonization." The conditions and potential of "education behind bars" for rehabilitation, student development, and personal reorientation are discussed through an analysis of the emergence of an innovative instructional environment not directly controlled by the official nor subcultural systems of the institution. In this context, the educational uses of the "sociological imagination" become part of a …
Welfare Fair Hearings And Client Advocacy: A Role For Social Workers, Jan L. Hagen
Welfare Fair Hearings And Client Advocacy: A Role For Social Workers, Jan L. Hagen
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
As a legally mandated grievance mechanism, welfare fair hearings provide a formal recourse for applicants and recipients of welfare dissatisfied with agency decisions. Fair hearings may be viewed as an example of one agency's attempt to foster fairness and to control administrative discretion. However, as a mechanism for redressing grievances, welfare fair hearings have a number of severe limitations. Social workers practicing with potential and actual recipients of public welfare are in a position to reduce these limitations through client advocacy.

On The Dialectics Of Social Theory And Action: A Synthesis Of Six Models Of Community Engagement, Drew Hyman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Two dominant theoretical perspectives--systems theory and conflict theory--can be seen to underlie major approaches to community intervention. This paper presents a conceptual linkage between models of intervention for planning and organizing as developed by Rothman and elaborated by Stockdale and major sociological theories of society. Two additional models are presented to address issues of management and administration. The six models are integrated into a typology which integrates the conflict and consensus theories of society in relation to the The result is a synthesis of six models for community engagement which is rooted in dialectically opposed theories of society, and which …

Social security beneficiaries and the general public alike are concerned about the financial solvency of the social security program. But how much do they know about how the system works? This study analyzes the determinants of knowledge about social security among nonremarried widows having children under their care. It builds a research model based on the economic theory of rational decision making. Using ordinary least squares regression estimation techniques, the level of knowledge about specific social security provisions is regressed on family income, implicit tax rate, number of children, human capital variables, and other demographic and locational variables. The findings …
