Three Spelling Measures As Correlates Of Reading Ability In Underprepared College Freshmen, Sandra K. Pitts
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
If a significant relationship were found between spelling abilities using varied measures and reading levels using an easily administered reading test, a remedial program for spelling should have a positive effect upon reading skills as well by tapping common cognitive processes and by cultivating those language competencies which are common to both reading and spelling. Such information would be of particular value to support facilities in colleges which serve large minority populations.

A Will Before There's A Way: Preschoolers And Books, Evelyn B. Freeman, Virginia Wasserman
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Many children already possess a strong desire to master the written word. What is the key to their eagerness? What factors exist in the home and/or cultural environment that directs a child's natural curiosity of the world around him/her into the arduous task of tearing apart and rebuilding language to allow written as well as vocal communication?

Previewing: A Directed Reading-Thinking Activity, Maria Valeri-Gold
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Previewing is an effective reading strategy that has been examined by researchers (Perry, 1959; Smith, 1985; Stauffer, 1969) as a technique to help students to retain textbook material. In previewing, students learn to establish purposes for reading and to make accurate predictions, actions which reinforce and enhance the learning process. Yet, many students do not bother to preview. Students open their textbooks and just start reading from page to page--an unstructured activity which severely limits the amount of learning accomplished.
Metacognition And Classroom Instruction, Mary Ann Wham
Metacognition And Classroom Instruction, Mary Ann Wham
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
When applied to the reading task, metacognition refers to the readers' ability to monitor their own comprehension of material and to invoke the appropriate skills and strategies necessary for comprehension. The purpose of this article is to review some of the recent research on metacognition and to present some implications for its use in classroom instruction.
Comprehension: Process Or Product?, Mary Jane Gray
Comprehension: Process Or Product?, Mary Jane Gray
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
In terms of the measurement of comprehension In school, in most instances we look at the product when we question students and hear their answers. More concern should be directed to the process, however, as we can make changes in the process through instructional techniques.
Desirable Teaching Behaviors For Writing, Dixie Lee Spiegel
Desirable Teaching Behaviors For Writing, Dixie Lee Spiegel
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Interest in the teaching of writing has dramatically increased in the last few years. Teachers who have often had little formal training in writing education find themselves searching for ways to assist their students to become better writers. The Desirable Teaching Behaviors described below were identified by the Parent Education Follow Through Program (Ware, 1980). They can help teachers provide effective instruction in writing and deal with all three stages of the composing process: precomposing (prewriting or planning), composing, and post-composing activities (revising and editing).

Reading Aloud To Students: Questioning Strategies To Listening Comprehension, Mary Shoop
Reading Aloud To Students: Questioning Strategies To Listening Comprehension, Mary Shoop
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Almost all children throughout the elementary grades respond positively to being read to (Mendoza, 1985). Many teachers consider reading aloud an important part of their daily routine, primarily so students can enjoy a good story. Being read to provides students with an opportunity to be transported across distance and time, to imagine, and to vicariously take part in experiences beyond the realm of the listener. Through such positive reading aloud experiences a variety of additional benefits are often achieved with little overt instructional support; reluctant readers may be "turned on" to reading, students may be exposed to literature beyond their …

Design And Analysis Of Efficient Algorithms To Solve The Maximum Concurrent Flow Problem, Farhad Shahrokhi
Design And Analysis Of Efficient Algorithms To Solve The Maximum Concurrent Flow Problem, Farhad Shahrokhi
Dissertations
The maximum concurrent flow (MCFP) is a generalized commodity flow problem, where every pair of entities can send and receive flow Ma85 , BM86 , MS86 . We develop efficient labeling algorithms to solve the MCFP. We explore the combinatorial structure of the MCFP and show that the problem of associating costs (distances) to the edges so as to maximize the minimum cost of routing the concurrent flow is the dual of the MCFP. This duality covers max-flow min-cut theorem as a special case. Applications in packet switched networks At81 and cluster analysis Ma86 are discussed.
Experiencing Scale Discrimination Between More And Less Productive Psychotherapy Sessions, Drevis L. Hager
Experiencing Scale Discrimination Between More And Less Productive Psychotherapy Sessions, Drevis L. Hager
Dissertations
Previous studies have failed to detect differences in experiencing (EXP) between more and less productive psychotherapy sessions. This study explored the possible relationship between EXP and session productivity and examined the efficacies of the conventional versus an alternative method of applying the EXP Scale.
Six client-therapist pairs audio recorded 52 psychotherapy hours, and after each independently completed a session productivity questionnaire. More and less productive sessions were selected based on the clients', therapists', and the clients' and therapists' combined responses. EXP ratings were made of 8-minute audio recorded segments, first using conventional mode and peak scores, and then using alternative …

The Effectiveness Of Video Tape Monitoring Of Direct Instruction Procedures Across Teachers, John H. Cottrell
The Effectiveness Of Video Tape Monitoring Of Direct Instruction Procedures Across Teachers, John H. Cottrell
Masters Theses
A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used to evaluate the effects of monitoring subject performance and providing feedback regarding the implementation of Direct Instruction (DI) procedures from video taped recordings of the subject's presentations of the DI lessons upon the implementation of those DI procedures. The subjects were two junior high school special education teachers who teach reading using the SRA Corrective Reading; Decoding B program. The DI lessons were recorded on VHS video tape and observational data were recorded during baseline. During intervention, a monitor also provided feedback on the subjects performance using examples from the video …
The Definition Of Social Problems: Differing Perceptions Of Israeli Social Workers And Women, Varda Muhlbauer, Claire Rabin, Nadine Hollander
The Definition Of Social Problems: Differing Perceptions Of Israeli Social Workers And Women, Varda Muhlbauer, Claire Rabin, Nadine Hollander
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Recent social changes have intensified and created special problems and needs among women. However, social work schools have not included women's studies as part of the overall curriculum. This Israeli study examined the congruence of women's needs as perceived by women clients and as perceived by social workers, to see whether a specialized training program is needed. Fifty low-socioeconomic status women, women selected from the general population, and 16 social workers from the same community were presented with a list of 21 problem areas known to be pertinent to women. The group of 50 women equally represented homemakers, divorced, widowed, …
A Critical Analysis Of The Impact Of Day Care On The Pre-School Child And The Family, John T. Pardeck, Jean A. Pardeck, John W. Murphy
A Critical Analysis Of The Impact Of Day Care On The Pre-School Child And The Family, John T. Pardeck, Jean A. Pardeck, John W. Murphy
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Maternal employment has increased dramatically over the last two decades. The result of this increase in the number of working mothers is the expanded use of day care programs for children. Examined in this paper are research findings on the impact of day-care on the child and the family. The implications of these findings for policy development are discussed.
Currently in the United States, over 50 percent of mothers work outside the home; this figure is expected to rise to 75 percent by 1990. The fastest growing segment of the working mother population is among those with children under two …
Horizontal Fragmentation And Allocation In A Distributed Database For Cost Minimization With Reliability And Space Constraints, Elmo Loren Ivey
Horizontal Fragmentation And Allocation In A Distributed Database For Cost Minimization With Reliability And Space Constraints, Elmo Loren Ivey
Masters Theses
In this paper a method for horizontal fragmentation of a relational database is presented. A method is given for calculating the benefit or cost savings obtained by allocating a given fragment to a site, independently for each site.
To obtain optimal benefit each fragment is allocated to all sites where there is a positive benefit. This may result in the allocation of some fragments to multiple sites.
Finally a method is given for removing or reallocating certain fragments from sites with insufficient storage. Also, a method is given for allocating fragments to multiple sites to meet constraints on the required …
Self-Esteem In Elementary School Children, Joyce Carson
Self-Esteem In Elementary School Children, Joyce Carson
Dissertations
The self-concepts of 232 fourth and fifth grade students in nine classroom groups were measured by use of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI). Each student completed the SEI, and the classroom teacher for each student completed the SEI for the students who were the subjects of the study. The subjects were from a medium-sized urban school district and from a lower or middle class socioeconomic background.
Data from the administration of the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory are reported as five separate scores: (a) general concept, (b) social-self-peers, (c) home-parents, (d) school-academic, and (e) total concept.
Data for the subjects were aggregated …
Use Of A Changeover Key To Train Serial Learning In The Pigeon, Rhoda Kay Yutzy-Ryan
Use Of A Changeover Key To Train Serial Learning In The Pigeon, Rhoda Kay Yutzy-Ryan
Masters Theses
Three pigeons were presented with a serial learning task involving a sequence of three colors: yellow, green and red. The colors appeared on a lit key one at a time in random order. The pigeons were required to peck the colors in the correct order and to use a second lit key (the changeover key) to change the color when it was incorrect. The data show that the pigeons were able to learn the task and generalize to novel arrays at a high level of accuracy. This extends the findings on serial learning with pigeons to a type of sequence …
