An Analysis Of Four Performance Techniques For Paraprofessional Direct-Care Staff Working With Developmentally Disabled Adults In Group Homes, L. Martin Grabijas
An Analysis Of Four Performance Techniques For Paraprofessional Direct-Care Staff Working With Developmentally Disabled Adults In Group Homes, L. Martin Grabijas
Dissertations
The habilitation and training of the developmentally disabled has improved markedly in the last two decades. The creation of small, community-based living facilities has allowed these individuals to move from restrictive settings into the community where training in daily living skills can occur in a more natural fashion. While this movement has been positive for the consumer, the preparedness of the staff working in those facilities has not been adequately addressed. Many human service agencies use a generic training package to prepare their staff, yet current research indicates that such training is less than adequate, both in terms of preparing …
The Effect Of A Multi-Component Treatment Package On Seat Belt Usage Among Hispanics, Senez Rodriguez-Charbonier
The Effect Of A Multi-Component Treatment Package On Seat Belt Usage Among Hispanics, Senez Rodriguez-Charbonier
Masters Theses
This study analyzed the impact of a combination of approaches on the frequency of seat belt usage in a large Hispanic community in western Michigan. Subjects in either a treatment or a no-treatment control condition were observed weekly for seat belt usage while arriving at church over several months. They were observed for four weeks prior, during and after an intervention program. Subjects in treatment condition attended weekly group meetings where they viewed seat belt use promotion videos, publicly signed behavioral contracts agreeing to use their seat belts, and received permanent prompts which were installed on the dashboard of their …
Parent, Student, And Teacher Perceptions Of Discipline Problems In The Middle School, Marilyn J. Giannangeli
Parent, Student, And Teacher Perceptions Of Discipline Problems In The Middle School, Marilyn J. Giannangeli
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of parents, students, and teachers relative to specific, documented behavioral problems which occur in the middle school environment. Of particular interest were the perceptions of the frequency with which these behaviors occurred, whether these perceptions correlated with the actual frequencies as documented by formal dismissal referrals, and the perceptions of appropriateness of referral to a school administrator of these behaviors.
The sample group consisted of 230 students, 25 teachers, and 230 parents from a selected middle school in Macomb County, located in southeastern Michigan. The instrument used for data collection …

Michigan Apple Pest Identifier And Manager Expert System, James R. Schalk
Masters Theses
The Michigan Apple Pest Identifier and Management System (MAPI) is a knowledge- based consultation software system. MAPI was designed to provide the user with the ability to identify insects which may harm the apples of Michigan orchards and to project occurrences of maximum adult emergence. A discussion of standard entomological and expert system concepts and the application of these concepts to the processing of information by the Michigan Apple Pest Identifier and Management System is presented. Future possible expansions of the system are suggested.
The Changing Roles Of Women In The People's Republic Of China, Priya Helweg
The Changing Roles Of Women In The People's Republic Of China, Priya Helweg
Honors Theses
The present Chinese government has persistently claimed that women have been completely emancipated through the enforcement of Communist ideology. In spite of the claim that women in modern China 'hold up half the sky' traditional beliefs continue to influence the position of women in contemporary China. As a consequence, women in the People's Republic of China — especially students — find themselves in a situation of confusing contradictions and frustrating obstacles. Traditional ideologies, as seen in the patriarchal kinship structure and the economic and political systems, aid rather than hinder the present government as it maintains a similar relation to …
"The Pistill Of Swete Susan": Translation And Commentary, Yvonne Daulton Carmicheal
"The Pistill Of Swete Susan": Translation And Commentary, Yvonne Daulton Carmicheal
Masters Theses
The Pistill of Swete Susan is an alliterative poem written in the fourteenth century by an unknown English author. Although the original manuscript has been lost, the poem is known to scholars through five extant manuscripts. The various manuscripts have been examined textually, but the poem itself has not been examined critically. The story is based on an Apocryphal text, the History of Susanna. While borrowing heavily from this text, the author has produced a work which is medieval in context and which provides insight into medieval concepts of justice, evil and love. This paper presents a translation and critical …

The Small Crimes Of Arthur Payne, Franklin T. Young
The Small Crimes Of Arthur Payne, Franklin T. Young
Masters Theses
Prologue
People ask how I could love a man with Arthur Payne. They say he was cruel, he sold out, he never loved me, that he thought no more of killing a man than a housefly. They're right. All Arthur cared about was the message he was created to deliver. Our shared days--the September afternoons we walked alone the shore at Cape Ann with our pants rolled up, and the fringe of the Atlantic foamed between our bare toes, or the city hours when Arthur followed me as I took pictures of black kids in scuffed British Knights trying to …
The Mapping Of A Colored Petri Net Model To An Ops5 Rule-Based Production System, Sally S. Lockwitz
The Mapping Of A Colored Petri Net Model To An Ops5 Rule-Based Production System, Sally S. Lockwitz
Masters Theses
This paper defines a method by which the colored petri net model of a concurrent system may be mapped to an equivalent rule-based production system. The mapping method defined is an intuitive process which results in a production system that clearly represents the petri net model.
In order to demonstrate the effectiveness and correctness of this method, the colored petri net representation of a part of a flexible manufacturing system of the Renault Car Company is mapped to an equivalent Sierra OPS5 rule-based production system.
An overview of petri nets and rule-based production systems is presented, along with a brief …
Witches Every Month? The Social Construction Of Premenstrual Syndrome, Suzanne Latham
Witches Every Month? The Social Construction Of Premenstrual Syndrome, Suzanne Latham
Masters Theses
Premenstrual syndrome was first reported in 1931, but it was not until the early 1980s that it received widespread attention in the medical literature and the popular press. This thesis is a sociological analysis of how physicians and others were able to define premenstrual problems as an illness. The thesis uses a phenomenological approach, referred to as social constructionism, to explore how medical researchers, physicians, pharmaceutical companies, feminists, various entrepreneurs, and others have attempted to define premenstrual problems to promote their own interests. The analytic method is documentary analysis. The thesis argues that physicians were able to make powerful claims, …
The Effects Of Performance Feedback On The Implementation Of A Statistically-Based Quality Control Program, Gordon O. Henry
The Effects Of Performance Feedback On The Implementation Of A Statistically-Based Quality Control Program, Gordon O. Henry
Masters Theses
Although various types of performance feedback have been shown to be effective in maintaining work-related behaviors in numerous settings, most of these behaviors have consisted of fairly simple tasks. More specifically, it has not been conclusively shown that such feedback procedures can be used to maintain the worker behaviors required in the implementation o f a statistically-based quality control program. The present study attempted to show that such complex behaviors could be maintained using effective feedback procedures.
The results showed that the subjects (machine operators) performed at a high level in completing required tasks associated with a statistically-based quality control …

Self-Control In Children: The Impact Of Reinforced Commitment, Michael G. Winter
Self-Control In Children: The Impact Of Reinforced Commitment, Michael G. Winter
Masters Theses
The present study attempted to determine whether offering a reward to subjects for "commiting" to a large, delayed-reward task affected their degree of self-control as assessed by the "switch point." Two boys and two girls between the ages of three and five participated.
The results of this study indicate that providing a reward for making a commitment to a future behavior involving a large, delayed-reward task does have an effect on a child's degree of self-control as measured by the "switch point." In addition, the "switch point" has been shown to be a useful tool for assessing a child's degree …

Home Safety-The Challenge To Public Health, Ray Ranson
Home Safety-The Challenge To Public Health, Ray Ranson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Home accidents are now a leading cause of death and injury particularly in young children and the elderly. For example, 3.1 million accidents occur in the home every year in the United Kingdom with no signs of diminishment. More effective systems of accident recording, monitoring, investigation, intercollaboration and education are urgently needed to redress this epidemic. More attention needs to be given to preventive safety design in architect training and adoption of home safety design standards and legislation. The major threat to public health which home accidents represent must not go unchallenged.
An Ecological Perspective On Housing, Health And Well-Being, Claude Raffestin, Roderick Lawrence
An Ecological Perspective On Housing, Health And Well-Being, Claude Raffestin, Roderick Lawrence
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Human ecology is a term that has been used frequently since the beginning of this century to examine some of the relationships between people and their surroundings. This article presents a different interpretation to that commonly used by academics and professionals in the medical and social sciences. The ecological perspective developed and illustrated here stems from an appraisal of many contemporary contributions, and an examination of Hippocrates's treatise "On Airs, Waters, And Places". The perspective presented herein accounts for the impacts of human products and processes on the biotic and abiotic constituents of the environment, as well as the human …
Health Aspects Of Housing And Town Planning, Eric Giroult
Health Aspects Of Housing And Town Planning, Eric Giroult
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This paper presents an overview of those parameters that define health aspects of rural and urban housing. It begins with a brief historical account of the major preoccupations faced by those concerned with environmental health. It then examines how dwelling hygiene and safety can be ensured by accounting for biological, chemical, engineering and physical parameters that are relevant to human health and well-being in residential quarters. The author draws on his broad knowledge of studies funded and/or published by the World Health Organization to establish a range of principles that ought to be the goal for promoting health and well-being …

Novice Teachers: Do They Use What We Teach Them?, Karen S. Daves, Johnnye L. Morton, Marsha Grace
Novice Teachers: Do They Use What We Teach Them?, Karen S. Daves, Johnnye L. Morton, Marsha Grace
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Teacher educators frequently engage in some rather agonizing soul searching regarding their effectiveness in preparing preservice teachers. Students pass through their classes, go on to other classes, and eventually they are in the real world of the classroom. Teacher educators seldom get direct feedback from students as to the relevance or the value of the instruction they received. Lacking this feedback, teacher educators who teach from a whole language perspective frequently question whether students actually use the instructional strategies they were taught in their reading courses, or whether they choose the more traditional basal reader approach.

Speech Pathology And Audiology At Western: A Brief History, Charles Van Riper, Frank B. Robinson
Histories of Western Michigan University
This historical telling of Western Michigan University's Department of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences was written by Dr. Charles Van Riper and Dr. Frank B. Robinson. The brief history describes how Dr. Van Riper built a clinic and developed fledgling profession of speech pathology. Hired in 1936 by Dr. Sangren, Van Riper used his skills as a clinician and as a gifted teacher to recruit students, design courses and acquaint the public with the services offered at a mobile speech clinic. By 1938, the first students majoring in “speech correction” were graduated and employed in public schools. By 1939, the …
