Pattern Books: An Activity For Beginning Reading Instruction, Elaine G. Wangberg Oct 1982

Pattern Books: An Activity For Beginning Reading Instruction, Elaine G. Wangberg

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The Pattern Book activity to be described can provide a means of introducing and reinforcing high frequency vocabulary within a Language Experience Approach. With this activity the teacher selects a high frequency word (or a few words) which a small group of students or an individual student does not know. These words may come from the students' self-selection, from student' dictation, from a word list or from a basal pre-primer. The teacher then thinks of a common pattern in which the word(s) might appear.

The following checklist and annotated resources are intended for those who use such experiences to 1) reinforce existing or newly taught skills or concepts; 2) improve social interactions among youngsters; 3) provide circumstances for student-directed learning; and 4) bring an enjoyable alternative to learning in the classroom.

In Defense Of Institutionalization: A Rape Crisis Center As A Case Study, Barbara Levy Simon Sep 1982

In Defense Of Institutionalization: A Rape Crisis Center As A Case Study, Barbara Levy Simon

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The prevailing wisdom of both the social science literature and of social movement activists postulates that the institutionalization of social movements is a conservatizing tendency. "The iron law of oligarchy," Robert Michels' concept, is invoked as the rule of thumb for social movement transformation.

From my participant observation study of STOP, an urban rape crisis center, I have drawn different conclusions. In that case study, it appears that institutionalization undermines oligarchy and conservatism, rather than contributing to them.

Employing Oberschall's resource mobilization theory of social movement development, I suggest that institutionalization fosters social change efforts at STOP by ensuring organizational …

Social-Emotional Keys To The Division Of Power, Philip Lichtenberg, Carol Roman Reimert, Susan S. Levine Sep 1982

Social-Emotional Keys To The Division Of Power, Philip Lichtenberg, Carol Roman Reimert, Susan S. Levine

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Social organizers concerned with facilitating the reallocation of power must not overlook psychological issues. Within groups, power hierarchies are a function of individual methods of coping with social-emotional interactions. Clinical insights suggest that both empowered and disempowered people participate in the process of establishing and maintaining this hierarchial structure.

Conservative Policies And Women's Power, Kristine Nelson, Arnold S. Kahn Sep 1982

Conservative Policies And Women's Power, Kristine Nelson, Arnold S. Kahn

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The recent setbacks imposed on the feminist movement by the forces of the New Right have led women to an increased understanding of the importance of power in maintaining male dominance. Although men exercise power over women in a variety of ways, a review of the findings of social psychology indicates that almosL all types of power derive from men's activities in the public sphere. The exercise of power has become a part of the male gender role and a primary source of men's identity and self esteem. The feminist movement's challenge to men's exclusive hold on the public sphere …

The Effects Of Intermittent Schedules Of Reinforcement On The Generation Of Adjunctive Behavior In Humans, Kenneth L. Hearn

Masters Theses

The primary goals of this study were: (1) to determine if interim behaviors occur with humans responding under intermittent schedules of reinforcement; -and, (2) if interim behaviors do occur, to compare the characteristics of those behaviors with the characteristics of adjunctive behavior in nonhumans. Two developmentally disabled males, ages 15 and 19, served as subjects. The subjects pressed a white panel for food, tokens and plastic objects under several schedules of reinforcement. The response rate on the white panel and the duration of interim behaviors that occurred during the inter-reinforcement intervals was measured using standard electro-mechanical equipment. Random Factors And Isofactors In Graphs And Digraphs, John Frederick Fink Aug 1982

Random Factors And Isofactors In Graphs And Digraphs, John Frederick Fink

Dissertations

A factor is a spanning sub(di)graph of a (di)graph. Factors that are generated by an algorithm that incorporates an element of randomness are often called random factors. An isofactor is essentially a factor G that is either empty or for which there exists a connected regular (di)graph H having a nontrivial G-factorization. Several topics, each concerning random factors or isofactors, are investigated in this dissertation. An historical introduction to these topics is given in Chapter I.

In Chapter II we define an antipath and say that a digraph is randomly antitraceable if every nonspanning antipath can be extended (at its …

Factors In The Control Of Corporations: Structural And Bureaucratic Impediments, Doris Jean Cubbernuss Aug 1982

Factors In The Control Of Corporations: Structural And Bureaucratic Impediments, Doris Jean Cubbernuss

Dissertations

The extent to which corporate power, in and of itself, is considered a problem in U.S. society is a function of the perceived role of the corporation in social, political, and economic structures. Recognition of the inordinate powers of large corporations in the social and political, as well as economic, institutions of the society serves as an impetus for the analysis of the structures and processes designed to control corporate activities. The structural and bureaucratic impediments to these control mechanisms are illustrated in the Ford Pinto case. The activities of the Ford Motor Company, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, …
