Empowerment Through The Needs Assessment Process, Michael Hibbard Mar 1984

Empowerment Through The Needs Assessment Process, Michael Hibbard

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

One of the most persistent issues in social welfare planning has been the relative roles of service provision and social change. They have often been conceived as dichotomous: the assumption is that one precludes the other, on both ideological and methodological grounds. However, this division may be more the product of turf wars and fuzzy thinking than any necessary dichotomy. In this article a rationale for viewing service delivery and social change as dimensions of a single process --empowerment -- is developed. Next the needs assessment is examined as a vehicle for implementing the process of empowerment. Finally, a case …

Empathy/Role Taking: A Theoretical Model For Feminist Therapy, Michele Wilson, Gayle Twilbeck Wykle Mar 1984

Empathy/Role Taking: A Theoretical Model For Feminist Therapy, Michele Wilson, Gayle Twilbeck Wykle

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Feminist therapy is directed not only at individual, but also at social change. Because of this dual aim of feminist therapy, the symbolic interactionist perspective, which describes individual initiative as a source of social change, is suggested as a theoretical orientation which can provide a useful model for feminist therapy. More specifically, the empathy/role-taking model for the clienttherapist relationship is outlined here.

The Effect Of Shear On Asa Sized Paper, Phillip G. Purpura Jan 1984

The Effect Of Shear On Asa Sized Paper, Phillip G. Purpura

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Alkaline papermaking systems have many advantages over the conventional acid systems; however, they have disadvantages in that they do not produce a highly sized sheet of paper consistently. This study investigation how shear, at the point of addition of an Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride/starch emulsion to a cellulose system, effects the sizing properties of a sheet. It was found that at no agitation, the sizing was low and very non-uniform. This was probably due to a lack of mixing, and thus a lack of contact between the emulsion and the fiber. The sizing increased as the mixing and contact between the …

The Application Of Culturally Relevant Factors To Literacy Programs In Appalachia, Marcia Baghban Jan 1984

The Application Of Culturally Relevant Factors To Literacy Programs In Appalachia, Marcia Baghban

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Appalachia is an American region characterized by a strong oral tradition. Ballads, ghotlore, minelore, herblore, riddles, and proverbs abound. It is not uncommon to have family members and neighbors visit for an entire day, filling the time talking. While the imposition of the mainstream technological society may be weakening the opportunities for the practice of such lore or the desire of the young people to learn the lore, the subculture continues to support a basically oral tradition.

Psychological Typology Of The Local Firm Certified Public Accountant, Paul John Otte Dec 1983

Psychological Typology Of The Local Firm Certified Public Accountant, Paul John Otte

Dissertations

This research expanded the study of psychological typology to the local firm Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Differences in type have been previously reported, based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), resulting from both level of authority and area of specialization in Big Eight firm CPAs. This study utilized the MBTI and a Personal Data Questionnaire to identify types and accumulate data related to the independent variables of level and preferred area of specialization. The MBTI operationalizes Jung's type theory and reports 16 possible Jungian types which were the dependent variables in this study.

The population of interest included individuals employed …

A Histopathological Assessment Of The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On The Ears Of Chinese Hamsters, Karen Ailsworth Dec 1983

A Histopathological Assessment Of The Effects Of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetes On The Ears Of Chinese Hamsters, Karen Ailsworth

Masters Theses

Research has produced evidence associating progressive, bilateral, sensorineural hearing loss with diabetes mellitus in human and animal subjects. The microangiopathy which is presumably the cause of hearing loss appears similar to the microangiopathy leading to retinal and renal atrophy.

In the present study the temporal bones of six streptozotocininduced diabetic Chinese hamsters and six nondiabetic Chinese hamsters were histologically processed. Sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin were assessed for total auditory and vestibular otopathology and revealed no statistically significant differences between the two groups. Sections stained with periodic acid-Schiff's were evaluated for vascular basement membrane changes and revealed no statistically …

Using Anthropological Approaches In A Human Service Setting, Steven Alan Erickson Dec 1983

Using Anthropological Approaches In A Human Service Setting, Steven Alan Erickson

Masters Theses

Public criticism of human service organizations has underlined the fact that there are essential differences between organizations which provide services and organizations which produce goods. As service providers, human service organizations represent an organized response to human needs and problems, but this response is affected by different assumptions about people's ability or inability to meet their own needs. The process of providing services entails a number of interactions at various levels between the organization and the community. These relationships are as complex as the people and social systems of which our pluralistic society is comprised, but there are special manifestations …
