The Impact Of Directly Mailed Family Planning Materials To Afdc Welfare Mothers, Paul J. Placek

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

Communications research has repeatedly documented the fact that people are affected by the various forms of mass media, and so family planning programs have begun to use television (Hutchinson, 1970), radio, movies, posters, telephones (Dabbs and Neiger, 1970), newspapers, and various combinations of these media (Clark and Morris, 1972; Chase, 1972; Balakrishnan, 1967; Takeshita, 1966; Cernada and Lu, 1972) in transmitting the message of family planning. Our present media focus, however, involves direct mailing, which in contrast to other media, often has the advantages of being sent by an authoritative or prestigious source, is relatively …

Academe: Internship: The Delicate Balance, Robert F. Kronick Apr 1974

Academe: Internship: The Delicate Balance, Robert F. Kronick

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

There appears to be a battle that heretofore has been a brushfire incursion, but what may now have the possibility of becoming something more involved. This is the raging debate between "traditional" scholars and those now committed to off-campus or experiential learning. Historically, there has always been disagreement over what constituted learning or how to evaluate what was learned. Now the area of disparagement appears to be over the legitimacy of off-campus experiences as learning and, secondly, how to evaluate these experiences as academic enterprises. As always seems to be the case in debates such …

Pandora's Box: The Liberation Of Welfare Mothers, Bonnie Morel Edington Apr 1974

Pandora's Box: The Liberation Of Welfare Mothers, Bonnie Morel Edington

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

The non-"misandrist" mainstream of the women's movement has suggested that, more than women being liberated from male oppression, both sexes need to be liberated from the tyranny of culturally determined sex roles, the last bastion of ascribed status. If all social roles were androgynous they could be based on more relevant criteria. For example, children would be encouraged to develop skills and talents without regard for their "appropriateness" to gender, the male-female ratio in the work force and in nearly all specific occupations would be virtually equal, pay would be equal, and the number of …

Anti-Catholicism In The 1920'S And Al Smith, Michael Alfonso Reynolds Mar 1974

Anti-Catholicism In The 1920'S And Al Smith, Michael Alfonso Reynolds

Honors Theses

The origin of this project stems from an episode in the life of my maternal grandfather. An Italian immigrant in a small Michigan community, he found his religion and ethnic origin were a handicap in business and society. In 1927, the local Ku Klux Klan ordered him to close his grocery store and c encouraged him to leave town. His reply was emphatically negative. By chance, a short time later, he heard the Klan had planned a rally to take place on the outskirts of town. After packing his Ford with his children and his pocket with his gun, he …

P-V-S: A New Approach To Teaching Communication Skills, Bruce A. Lloyd

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Conscientious teachers are constantly searching for viable procedures which will enhance pupil creativity in oral and written expression. Typically such teachers attempt to avoid the sterile, stereotyped, workbook-oriented language "lessons" and endeavor to bring into their classrooms valuable activities which provide some direction but do not stifle pupil interest or creativity. Furthermore, because the acquisition of speaking and writing skills is being encouraged in modern classroom instructional programs, those media which assist the teacher are in ever-increasing demand.

The Communication Of Legitimacy, Kenneth E. Boulding Jan 1974

The Communication Of Legitimacy, Kenneth E. Boulding

Perspectives (1969-1979)

One of the most important and at the same time most puzzling strands in the great web of society is that which constitutes the legitimacy of human relationships. It is this which makes the difference between the policeman and the bandit, the pretender and the king, the heretic and the orthodox, the bastard and the heir. Without legitimacy, no complex and continuing operation of social life is possible. Social relations become one-shot jobs, single acts of violence or even of exchange, without any continuing pattern. The struggle of rival systems of legitimation is by far the most important conflict in …

General Education: Image And Reality, Paul Bernstein Jan 1974

General Education: Image And Reality, Paul Bernstein

Perspectives (1969-1979)

What, then, are the conclusions to be drawn for the future of general education in an open society?

1) If general education is to help our students achieve greater wisdom, departments must react in a less threatened manner. However, in the current educational climate, the legitimate needs of general education programs are not likely to prevail over departmental territoriality in very many institutions.

2) General education offerings clearly need more administrative support in an era which has come to exalt professional development as the sine qua non to success. As the Levine and Weingert study implied, this should be in …

Using Small Groups In Undergraduate Teaching, Francis Gross Jr. Jan 1974

Using Small Groups In Undergraduate Teaching, Francis Gross Jr.

Perspectives (1969-1979)

An old man once told me when I was a student of philosophy at St. Louis University, "Francis, never trust a successful teacher." A very successful college professor of mathematics once told me later, "Most teachers talk too God damned much." I have puzzled over these seemingly strange comments on teaching for the past twenty years. They are the genesis of this paper.

With regard to the "successful" teacher, Herbert Kelman sheds some light on why it is possibly a very bad idea to be successful.1 He identifies three models of social influence on opinion change--compliance, identification, and internalization. …
