Gemeinschaft Vs. Gesellschaft In A Finnish New Town, Stanley F. Wiseman Nov 1975

Gemeinschaft Vs. Gesellschaft In A Finnish New Town, Stanley F. Wiseman

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Excerpt from the full-text article:

This article has a dual purpose: (1) to describe report on the creation and progress of one of the most famous New Towns, Tapiola, in Finland, and (2) to "operationalize" in this scene the dual concepts of Ferdinand Tbnnies' Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft, or al they have come to be identified modernly, cimunity and contract bureaucracy. (T~nnies, 1963:12-25) This approach is used because the major attempt in the world today to restore the peopleoriented element of Geeinschaft to local government is being taken in the New Town setting, and one of the most successful (according to …

Condominium Housing: Some Social And Economic Implications, Frank G. Mittelbach, Joe Ebin Nov 1975

Condominium Housing: Some Social And Economic Implications, Frank G. Mittelbach, Joe Ebin

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The functioning of condominium communities and projects has received increased attention from housing analysts in many professions. As of 1973, there were an estimated 15,000 condominium and townhouse communities in the United States, a figure expanding approximately by 4,000 annually.

In this context, the proliferation of home owners associations in the communities or projects is of special interest due to their emerging role as a new form of residential government. This role manifests itself as both supplementary and in part complementary to the existing government framework. The collective provision and maintenance of selected services, including roads, utilities, lighting, refuse collection, …

The Quest For Competency In The Teaching Of Reading: A Librarian's Point Of View, Jean Lowrie

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

I would like to do three things: first, share with you a picture of libraries as they are now developing programs and planning for tomorrow's needs; present some specific examples of library services which relate to reading needs; finally, explore some examples of today's reading materials which I hope you as reading specialists either know about or with which you will become familiar, and which you and your clientele can obtain through library collections.

Making A Dent In The Content: Reading That Is, Elmer J. Cummings

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

In 1954 Rudolf Flesch wrote a book published by Harper and Brothers that caused an upheaval in homes and public schools throughout America. His book Why Johnny Can't Read is referred to as an angry book by an aroused parent. The conclusion drawn by Dr. Flesch as to why Johnny can't read is that "nobody ever showed him how" (Flesch, 1965, p. 2).

Using The Child's Oral Language In Beginning Reading Instruction, Alden J. Moe Oct 1975

Using The Child's Oral Language In Beginning Reading Instruction, Alden J. Moe

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading should be considered a continuation of the language acquisition process and as such the early reading instruction, including pre-reading literary experiences, must build upon the language acquired in the pre-school years. As with oral language, in reading also, the child must discover the theory of his language and he must do so with relatively small amounts of data about his language. In the process of acquiring oral language in the pre-school years, the child must mimic, try out, and accept or reject his new information. In reading, the process is the same except that the learning may be structured …

A Report Of An Internship In Gull Lake Community Schools, Gull Lake, Michigan, Gary J. Jackson

Masters Theses

The Gull Lake Community Schools, a class B school with an enrollment of 3000 students, 145 teachers, and 12 administrative staff, provided an intern experience for me from June 24, 1974 to August 14, 1974.

The intern experience was related to the role of the school superintendent. The role of the superintendent varies from district to district but generally playing the role requires a great deal of human, conceptual, and technical skills that when utilized properly result in a healthy, productive educational institution.

As a result of the internship, this intern believes that he has a very broad knowledge of …
