Ethnography For Archaeology: A Functional Interpretation Of An Upper Great Lakes Prehistoric Fishing Artifact, Donald E. Weston
Ethnography For Archaeology: A Functional Interpretation Of An Upper Great Lakes Prehistoric Fishing Artifact, Donald E. Weston
Masters Theses
Introduction and Problem
One of the basic and challenging tasks in archaeology is the interpretation of artifacts and the reconstruction of prehistoric cultures. Difficulties arise primarily because (1) not all past human behavior is manifest in the archaeological record, and (2) that which remains is only adequately represented. Our success at understanding prehistory is further limited by differential preservation, lack of representative samples, and loss of contextual data. Even with the use of sophisticated recovery techniques, vigorous analysis, and statistical manipulation it is seldom possible to arrive at neat reconstructions. Prehistory is, after all, the indirect study of human behavior …

A Descriptive Study Of Community Education Models According To Selected Dimensions, Dale L. Cook
A Descriptive Study Of Community Education Models According To Selected Dimensions, Dale L. Cook
Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to describe each of three models of community education along selected dimensions, and to describe how the models were similar and/or different from each other. The three models were defined according to the way community education organizations are financed. Model I represented those organizations in which the community education effort was totally financed through public schools. Model II represented those organizations in which the community education effort was jointly financed through public schools and other community resources. Model III represented those organizations in which the community education effort was financed through community resources other …

Parent Involvement In Children's Reading Readiness Development, Ann E. Klein
Parent Involvement In Children's Reading Readiness Development, Ann E. Klein
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Before the days of community-supported schools, parents were the primary reading teachers of their children. This was, of course, if the parents could read themselves. Once schools became established, parents generally relinquished the responsibility for teaching their children to read to the schools. Despite the fact that today most parents know how to read, too often they take a very inactive role in their children's reading development.
Factors Affecting The Relationship Between Listening And Reading, Shirley Olejnik
Factors Affecting The Relationship Between Listening And Reading, Shirley Olejnik
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Although it is important to look at the relationships between all of the language arts, the purpose of this paper is to focus on the relationship between reading and listening. There are several practical reasons for focusing on these perceptive skills. With the myriad of listening/reading materials published today, reading teachers must be ready to evaluate the effectiveness of such materials. In addition, they should be armed with knowledge about the utility of using training in specific and general listening skills as a method of improving reading skills. And, finally, they should have some ideas as to how to incorporate …
Divorce--Reading Style, Nicholas P. Criscuolo
Divorce--Reading Style, Nicholas P. Criscuolo
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
What is one of the biggest problems in the teaching of reading today? It is curriculum isolationism which results in treating reading as a separate entity rather than as part of the language arts. Teachers spend vast amounts of time teaching reading skills as outlined in basal readers while virtually ignoring the opportunities for children to listen, speak and write. This divorce creates a sterile reading program whereas a marriage of reading with other communication skills results in an effective and healthy reading program.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The single most serious impediment to successful school achievement in general and to learning to read in particular is the deaf child's impaired language function.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Time and again I have listened to busy teachers complaining that they don't have time to read the many current articles on IQ, open classrooms, class organization, learning theory, motivation, and use of traditional material which appear in professional literature. Therefore, I would like to consolidate many of these sources into one article which will give the reader some indication of the trends which seem to be taking place concerning these things.

Systems Theory, Robert D. Leighninger Jr.
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Systems Theory has generated a lot of excitement in the last decade. It has also spawned more than its share of pitchmen, enough so that it is in danger of being discredited before its genuine potential in many fields of practice has been fairly tested. Wearing the double halo of Science and Corporate Efficiency conferred by its association with the aerospace industry and the Pentagon, it has been enthusiastically offered to Federal and State governments (Chartrand, 1971; Hoos, 1969 & 1972) as well as private individuals and organizations as a way of solving complex social problems like mass transit, crime, …

Interactionist Theory, Human Behavior Social Work And Social Work Education, Ralph Segalman
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Much explanation of human behavior is based on assumptions about animal behavior. Two major contemporary theories, Behaviorism and Freudianism place major emphasis upon the human being as animal. Many middle-level theories have no reference to man's distinctive social characteristics. However, social explanations of behavior do have a heuristic advantage in the study of human functioning and "social pathology."
