Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
With the impetus gathered by such ideas as presented by Flesch (1955) in "Why Johnny Can't Read" and, certainly, by Allen's (1969) proclamation that every child should have the "right to read," a large portion of current educational writing has concerned the area of reading and reading education. Within reading education one particular facet of instruction, content area reading, has blossomed within the last few years. Articles, books, and conference sessions have been devoted to this very specific area of reading education (Herber, 1970; Laffey, 1972; Robinson, 1975).

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Cross-generational programs are enabling the elderly in America to become more involved in the education of our children. Special federal programs such as RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteers Program) and the Foster Grandparents Program have brought many older persons into schools to serve as aides, tutors, and volunteers. Local school districts and individual schools have developed programs involving the elderly with children. The elderly have shown they can use their love and concern for children, their knowledge of content, and their patience and skill in working with children to develop a warm, helping relationship as they help children grow and learn.

Identifying The Basic Elements Of Critical Reading, Thomas R. Schnell
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
A person undertaking a search of the existing literature on the topic of critical reading would notice immediately that there is a rather large number of articles and book chapters dealing with the topic. In reading a few of the articles it would also become apparent that there is little consensus regarding what critical reading is - the definitions range from a very narrow view such as "Critical reading is recognizing biased writing" to rather broad views such as "Critical reading is the process of comprehending in its highest form." One other thing emerges clearly from the literature; critical reading …

In 1975, the National Right-to-Read effort funded an experimental project at Northwestern University involving the application of computer facilities to the operation of a pre-service program for teacher preparation in reading. Utilizing a competency-based model (Houston and Howsam, 1972), the computer component of the program managed the student's entry into and progress through a series of on-line, interactive tutorials by assessing their initial behaviors, assigning lesson modules, guiding use of a bibliographical data base and monitoring progress.

Honors Theses
This paper explores the contemporary purpose and function of the General Manger's position on a baseball team, as well as addressing some historical events that contributed to this present role. By examining these events, one can gain insight into the increased responsibility that has been thrust upon the General Manager, and the eventual delegation of these duties as the responsibilities multiplied.

Administrative Thinking On Youth And Youth Programs, John F. Longres, Norman Wyers
Administrative Thinking On Youth And Youth Programs, John F. Longres, Norman Wyers
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Administrators have a lot of influence over the nature of youth programs. Because of this, their thinking on the causes of delinquency, the nature of ideal youth programs, and the role of youth workers were tapped. In the past, people in the field of delinquency have been accused of assuming an individual, personal problem or deficiency point of view. This study of administrators in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area suggests that, while some evidence for a more social structural understanding exists, in general the individual problem perspective prevails. An explanation for the persistence of a personal problem perspective is advanced …
Problems Inherent In Multi-Service Delivery Units, Arnold J. Katz
Problems Inherent In Multi-Service Delivery Units, Arnold J. Katz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Like Alice, the field of social work in general, and the social service delivery system in particular, seems to be going through a confusing state, lacking direction. Just as the Cat suggests to Alice that any direction would get her somewhere over time, so the diverse social service delivery systems(1) have, in recent years, moved off in a particular direction (methodologically) only to return to step one and then set off again. Various fads have seemed to provide the needed answers. In time, however, they served only to create a series of new questions with corresponding dilemmas.
In the last …

New Left Organizers And The Poor, Myles H. Whitney, Paul J. Champagne
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The decade of the sixties witnessed a resurgence of radical or leftist movements in the United States as manifested in the political activism of college students, civil rights organizations, community groups and others. Today, in the post-Vietnam era of the seventies, the fires of the New Left appear to have been dampened. But even though these groups may be less visible and vocal today, it would be a mistake to think that their ideas are no longer of interest to certain segments of our society. Some contemporary New Left groups, while outwardly rejecting dramatic Marxist revolutionary tactics have instead engaged …
Organizing The Poor, Charles S. Stevens
Organizing The Poor, Charles S. Stevens
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
One area of interest in poverty in Urban America has focused attention on the urban poor and their participation. A major consideration about the problem has been the view that poverty is a pervasive condition and that it can be a determinint of behavior. The notion of a "culture of poverty" and a "welfare syndrome" was an expression of this viewpoint indicating poverty is a way of life. A second viewpoint suggests the urban poor are victims of urban society and are therefore restricted from meaningful participation.2 This viewpoint is in contrast to a "culture of poverty", but it does …

Introduction
The decision of the British Government to publicly finance New Town building was a landmark event. The decision was, however, a result of many years of prior experimentation. These experiments ranged from trial-and-error to plans well thought out, that contained within them many philosophical goals.
The first widely accepted formulation of a New Town was that of Ebenezer Howard. The theoretical plan contained several goals that were to be developed, used, and modified by later British planners. Although Howard borrowed many goals from other "planners," he was one of the first to incorporate many identifiable goals into a single …
