Effect Of Jump Direction And External Load On Single-Legged Jump-Landing Biomechanics, Alexander J. Hron, Colin W. Bond, Benjamin C. Noonan
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(1): 234-248, 2020. External load may increase an individual’s risk of non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during single-legged jump-landing (SLJL).This study evaluated the effects of jump direction and external load on hip and knee joint motion and time to stabilization (TTS) during SLJL. Seventeen active males (n = 8) and females (22.2 ± 3.0 y, 1.75 ± 0.08 m, 73.4 ± 12.0 kg) participated in this randomized, crossover designed study. Single-legged jump-landings performed in two conditions, including without external load (BW) and with a torso-worn weight vest equal to 10% of the participant’s …

Injury Surveillance During Competitive Functional Fitness Racing Events, Sean Williams, Joanne Hitchcock, Lewis Davies, Christopher Barnes, Steven Williams, Amy Williams
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(6): 197-205, 2020. High-intensity functional training (HIFT) is an exercise training modality that has grown considerably in popularity over the last decade. More recently, competitive functional fitness racing events have emerged from HIFT, and aim to test athletes’ proficiency across a variety of movements, skills, and energy systems. Whilst the injury risk associated with HIFT has been shown to be low and comparable to other forms of recreational fitness activities, the injury risk associated with competitive functional fitness racing events is currently unknown. A prospective cohort design was used to record medical-attention injuries during two …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(6): 183-196, 2020. The purpose of this study was to measure the generating effects of Contrast Training (CT) on 6-hour post-activation potentiation (PAP) and its influence on jumping and on on-ice repeated sprint performance in ice hockey players. Forty-one participants were divided in two groups: experimental (EG) and control group (CG). The EG followed the CT PAP protocol which consisted of 5 sets of 5 half inertia back squat superset with 6 squat jumps. The effects of PAP were measured with the vertical countermovement jump (CMJ), stationary broad jump (BJ) and 9 repeated on ice …

Young Adults Performance Of Unipedal Dynamic Balance With Various Footwear Conditions, Barbara Smith, Alice Hartman, David Martin, Jeremy Milford, Jacob Simmonds, Chris Truong
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 206-215, 2020. Wearing barefoot-style (minimalist) shoes is suggested as a transition between wearing shoes and barefoot running. Some sources equate wearing Vibram FiveFingers™(VFFs), a brand of barefoot shoes, with running/walking barefoot. Static and dynamic balance exercises are recommended. Little information is available on the effects barefoot shoes may have on dynamic balance. This study’s purpose was to examine dynamic balance when participants wore VFFs, athletic shoes, or went barefoot (BF). To test dynamic balance, participants used a modified version of the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT), in which the reaching leg followed only three …

A Comparison Of Quadriceps-To-Hamstrings Ratios During Isokinetic Testing, Cutting, And Drop Landings In Male Soccer Players, Shane O'Donnell, Dana Eitan, Jenevieve L. Roper
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(4): 157-166, 2020. Collegiate soccer is not an unusual place to suffer a knee injury. The sport has many dynamic movements, such as cutting, jumping and shooting. Many professionals use quadriceps-to-hamstring (Q/H) ratios as a tool to determine when an injured player can to return to game play or use the ratio to investigate how predisposed a certain player is to sustaining a knee injury. However, many of these ratios are taken in isokinetic testing in a controlled environment and to our knowledge it is unknown if these ratios are similar to those measured during …

Neither A Multi-Ingredient Pre-Workout Supplement Nor Caffeine Were Effective At Improving Markers Of Blood Flow Or Upper-Body Resistance Exercise Performance, Michael S. Blake, Nathaniel R. Johnson, Kara A. Trautman, James W. Grier, Sherri Stastny, Kyle Hackney
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(2): 167-182, 2020. Few studies have measured the effects of multi-ingredient pre-workout supplements on blood flow or heart rate variability or have compared a multi-ingredient pre-workout supplement to a matched single ingredient. This study examined the effects of a multi-ingredient pre-workout supplement, an equivalent amount of caffeine, and placebo on markers of resistance training performance, blood flow, blood pressure, and heart rate variability. The study utilized a randomized, placebo-controlled, repeated-measures, crossover design. Twelve resistance-trained males (22.75 ± 4.51 yrs; 183.4 ± 7.37 cm; 91.05 ± 17.77 kg) completed the study. Resistance exercise performance was defined …

Whole-Body Vibration Training In Frail, Skilled Nursing Home Residents, Brandon Grubbs, Arturo Figueroa, Jeong-Su Kim, Robert Contreras, Karla Schmitt, Lynn Panton
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(3): 140-156, 2020. Frailty is a geriatric syndrome characterized by diminished muscle strength, endurance, and weakened physical function. Physical frailty is often unaddressed clinically as it tends to manifest among chronic illnesses and sarcopenia, and consensus criteria for frailty diagnosis remains elusive. Whole-body vibration training (WBVT) has been used to improve deficits in lower body muscular strength and functional performance in healthy and high functioning older adults; therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of WBVT on physical frailty in skilled nursing home residents. This study compared the effects of 12 …
