Sex Difference In Cardiorespiratory Stress From High-Intensity Interval Exercise, Paolo Miguel Salvador, Mauricio Martinez, Joaquin Gonzales, Eric Rivas

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

High-intensity interval exercise is time efficient and has similar cardiorespiratory health benefits as moderate-intensity continuous exercise. However, the prescription of high-intensity exercise may differ between men and women due to sex differences in cardiovascular function. PURPOSE: Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine whether sex differences exist for absolute and relative oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate (HR) when exercise was performed at a percentage of maximal cycling work rate measured in watts (Wmax). METHODS: We recruited 8 active college-aged participants (5 men, 3 women). Participants completed an incremental maximal exercise test on a …

The Effect Of External Ankle Support On Lower Extremity Biomechanics, Haley Hurt, Scott Mclean, Edward Merritt

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

ACL injury risk has been related to abnormal frontal plane knee mechanics. It’s not clear whether constraining another lower extremity joint with bracing or taping might contribute to this increased injury risk by altering knee movements. PURPOSE: To examine the effect of external ankle support on lower extremity kinematics during a drop landing. METHODS: Twenty-five participants (20.3 ± 1.2 years, 168.7 ± 32.9 cm, 78.0 ± 14.9 kg) performed drop landings from a height of 61 cm under three conditions; no ankle support, athletic tape, and a lace-up ankle brace. The subject performed three trials per condition. Sixteen …

The squat is a fundamental exercise performed by athletes to improve muscular fitness. There are many variations of the back squat including the chained squat, box squat, and barefoot squat. Strength training literature recommends the inclusion of proper squats for athletes as well as variations of the squat to improve adaptations. Several studies have been published that analyze the neuromuscular relationship using electromyography (EMG) but few studies exist that compare EMG responses between squat variation. Purpose: Thus, the purpose of this investigation was to compare the electromyography (EMG) amplitude of the gluteus maximus (GM), biceps femoris (BF), and vastus lateralis …

Impact Of Astaxanthin Supplementation On Postprandial Oxidative Stress, Liliana I. Renteria, Matthew J. Mcallister Feb 2020

Impact Of Astaxanthin Supplementation On Postprandial Oxidative Stress, Liliana I. Renteria, Matthew J. Mcallister

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid found in salmon and microalgae that has antioxidative properties. Previous research shows dietary supplementation may result in increased endogenous antioxidant status and reduced markers of oxidative stress (OS). Research suggests OS causes increased risk for cardiometabolic and other chronic diseases, making it important to find interventions that can decrease occurrence of OS. While astaxanthin has been shown to be antioxidative, most studies observing the impact of astaxanthin has on OS has involved rodent models, therefore human trials are needed. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess whether four weeks of astaxanthin supplementation …

Impact Of Fluid Consumption On Estimates Of Intracellular, Extracellular, And Total Body Water From Multi-Frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis, Marqui Benavides, Baylor A. Johnson, Patrick S. Harty, Matthew T. Stratton, Jacob Dellinger, Robert W. Smith, Abegale D. Williams, Christian Rodriguez, Sarah White, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (MFBIA) is able to distinguish between total body water (TBW), extracellular water (ECW) and intracellular water (ICW). Low-frequency currents are thought to primarily pass through ECW, while high-frequency currents pass through all body fluids (i.e., TBW). ICW can then be estimated by subtracting ECW from TBW. As such, MFBIA may have utility for monitoring health conditions resulting in water retention within specific fluid compartments. However, the sensitivity of fluid estimates from MFBIA is not fully established. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of acute fluid ingestion on body water estimates produced by a MFBIA analyzer. METHODS …

Water Immersion Skin Wrinkling: The Influence Of Age, Sex, And Adiposity, Jonathon Kava, Daroonwan Suksom, Hirofumi Tanaka

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

From the evolutionary perspective, water immersion skin wrinkling (WISW) is the perceived water drainage to enhance grip in wet conditions. In the modern medicine, it is a noninvasive test of limb sympathetic function and can be used to assess peripheral neuropathy. WISW occurs as sympathetically-mediated contraction of subcutaneous glomus bodies after perturbation of ion concentration in palmar sweat glands. This phenomenon has not been studied well. Currently, it is not clear if common demographic variations (e.g., age, sex, and adiposity) that impact overall cardio-autonomic health status also affect WISW. Purpose: The purpose of the present study is to determine if …

Acute Renal Responses To Moderate-Intensity Aerobic Exercise With Non-Traditional Markers Of Renal Health And Function In Healthy Individuals: A Pilot Study, David J. Buckley, Ahmed Ismaeel, Kathleen Adair, Autumn Oliver, Evlampia Papoutsi, Kaitlyn Prezioso, Panagiotis Koutakis, Jeffrey Forsse

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Aerobic exercise elicits a multitude of physiological improvements in both healthy and diseased populations. However, acute changes in renal function with aerobic exercise remain difficult to quantify by traditional marker serum creatinine (sCr) to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Recently, novel biomarkers cystatin C (CyC) and urine epidermal growth factor (uEGF) have been introduced as more reliable markers of renal health and function to be used in conjunction with sCr to assess changes in renal health and function in mid-spectrum CKD. Potentially, greater changes in novel markers of renal health and function similar to mid-spectrum CKD can be observed in …

Comparison Of Bioimpedance Analysis And Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry In Division Iii Football Athletes, Dylan J. Birdsell, Grant Tinsley, Javier Zaragoza, Matthias Tinnin, Jessica Prather, Christine Harrison, Shay Smith, Chris Lockwood, Lem Taylor

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Body composition is an integral component of physiology and pathology, as well as an indication of how the musculoskeletal system changes over time in response to training and/or nutritional modifications. Two common methods of estimating body composition include bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). There is a debate regarding the agreement between these two methods, and it is thought that the population being tested may influence the similarity of estimates obtained by these technologies. Limited data comparing these two methodologies in athletic populations are available. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to take examine the agreement …

Is Age An Independent Factor In Assessing Renal Health And Function In Healthy Individuals? A Pilot Study, Eleasar Valadez, David J. Buckley, Ahmed Ismaeel, Autumn Oliver, Kathleen Adair, Evlampia Papoutsi, Kaitlyn Prezioso, Andreas Stamatis, Panagiotis Koutakis, Jeffrey S. Forsse

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a measure of renal filtration and clearance of serum creatinine and is conventionally used to characterize the progressive decline in renal function. Assessment of renal function and health is traditionally believed to be age-dependent. However, in the absence of cardiometabolic diseases (hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipemia, etc.), this may not be the case. Recently, novel markers of renal health and function support the notion that age is a secondary factor influencing renal decline. PURPOSE: To determine the magnitude of age as an influencing factor involved in the decline of renal function with novel markers of renal …
