Acute Partial Sleep Deprivation And High-Intensity Exercise Effects On Cardiovascular Autonomic Regulation And Lipemia Network, Zacharias Papadakis, Sergi G. Retortillo
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Autonomic nervous system imbalance demonstrated by decreased heart rate variability (HRV) is linked to acute partial sleep deprivation (ASPD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Cardiometabolic lipemia has been linked to changes in HRV. Habitually active individuals exercising in the morning hours under APSD and consuming afterwards a high-fat breakfast, may disrupt the network coordination of both the cardiovascular autonomic regulation and cardiometabolic lipemic systems jeopardizing their health. The human organism is comprised by an integrated network of interconnected organ systems and functions, therefore, a disruption/failure of one system can trigger a cascade of failures manifested as disease state. PURPOSE: To …

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is a simple and effective technique to estimate body composition, including body fat percentage (BFP). While these analyzers are a popular method of describing a person’s body composition, laboratory-grade devices are expensive and inaccessible to most people. As a result, they may be an unrealistic method for consumers to use. However, consumer-grade devices are increasingly available. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare laboratory-grade and consumer-grade bioelectrical impedance analyzers. METHODS: Seventy-five adults (40 F, 35 M) were evaluated using a laboratory-grade, hand-to-foot, multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analyzer (BIALAB; Seca mBCA 515) …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Drastic changes to lifestyles have occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. A consequence of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) used against this health crisis, such as stay-at-home orders, has been increased isolation and less social interaction for a majority of people. For overall wellbeing, it is important to stay both physically and mentally active. However, for many individuals motivation may be a barrier. There are non-modifiable (e.g., sex, age) and modifiable factors (e.g., physical activity, diet) that may be associated with motivation to perform physical/mental tasks. PURPOSE: To explore if there is an association between non-modifiable and modifiable variables on motivation to …

Thermogenic supplements are widely used in the general population to support attempted fat loss; however, the efficacy and safety of these supplements are questioned. PURPOSE: To determine whether a thermogenic supplement affects metabolic rate, hemodynamic responses, and mood states. METHODS: In a randomized double-blind crossover design, 23 females (22.2 ± 3.5 y; 164.8 ± 6.4 cm; 73.5 ± 6.9 kg) who were moderate caffeine consumers (<150mg/day) reported to the lab on a 12-hour fast for baseline assessments of resting energy expenditure (REE) via indirect calorimetry, heart rate (HR), blood pressure (SBP and DBP), and hunger, satiety, and mood states. Thereafter, subjects ingested the assigned treatment (active treatment containing caffeine, micronutrients, and phytochemicals [TR] or placebo [PL]). All variables were reassessed at 30-, 60-, 120-, and 180-minutes post-ingestion. Subjects repeated the same protocol with ingestion of the opposite treatment on a separate day. All data were analyzed using a 2x5 ANOVA with repeated measures and significance was accepted a priori at p<0.05. RESULTS: In the TR group, mean increases in REE of 121 to 166 kcal/d were observed at 30-, 60-, and 180-minutes post-ingestion (p<0.01 for all). PL group mean decreases in REE of 72 to 91 kcal/d were observed at 60-, 120-, and 180-minutes (p<0.05 for all). Similarly, TR resulted in mean increases in expired carbon dioxide of 13 to 19 mL/min at 30- and 60-minutes (p<0.05 for both), and oxygen consumption increased by 12 to 24 mL/min at 30-, 60-, 120-, and 180-minutes (p<0.05 for all) post-ingestion. Respiratory quotient decreased at 120- and 180-minutes in both treatments. A mean decrease in HR of 5 bpm was observed at 30-minutes post-ingestion of TR (p<0.01). Slight increases in SBP of 3 to 4 mmHg were observed at 30-, 120-, and 180-minutes (p<0.05 for all) post-ingestion of TR, while no effects were observed for DBP. Observed increases in SBP were within normal blood pressure ranges. TR decreased subjective fatigue with no other significant changes in mood states. CONCLUSION: …0.05>0.01).>0.05>0.05>0.05>0.01>0.05.>150mg/day)>

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(7): 276-288, 2022. An essential job task for law enforcement officers is a body drag, where they must drag a person from a hazardous environment. In California, a 9.75-m body drag with a 74.84-kg dummy must be completed within 28 s to graduate academy. This mass is less than the average US adult, which may suggest it should be increased. This has not happened due to concerns regarding a potential increase in recruit injuries and failure rates. However, if recruits can complete the drag without formal training, this could leave scope for increasing the mass. …

In today’s world liberals look at conservatives as the villains, and vice versa. How did this come to pass? In this essay a model of the biological roots of liberalism and conservatism is advanced; this is followed by a discussion of why cognitive dissonance may represent the key process in our social evolution. Alfred Russel Wallace’s experience with cognitive dissonance is then detailed, including how he dealt with it.

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(3): 177-190, 2022. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between subjective, self-reported cancer related fatigue (CRF) and objective measures of muscular strength and fatigability in cancer survivors. A total of 155 cancer survivors (60 ± 13 years of age) completed a questionnaire for the assessment of CRF, along with assessments of handgrip strength, quadriceps strength and fatigability (reduced force/torque). Fatigability was measured by completing 15 maximal isokinetic contractions of the knee extensors (QFI). Spearman’s rho correlation coefficients were calculated as pairwise combinations of the numerical and categorical dependent measures. Categorical variables …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 15(1): 191-205, 2022. Past investigations have revealed that running shoes affect ground reaction force parameters. However, these studies are unclear as to whether these changes, which occur while running in different shoe types of differing masses, are the result of the structural design or the mass of the shoe. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of shoe mass on vertical ground reaction force parameters: active peak and impulse. Methods. 21 male runners (24.52 years old (± 3.09) and 77.13kg (± 7.9)) participated in the experiment. A baseline shoe (BS) …

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(5): 152-165, 2022. The purpose was to examine differences in affective responses to repeated sessions of endurance training with different intensities in healthy adults. Thirty young, healthy, and recreationally physically active adults (50% women, age 24.4 ± 6.0 years, VO2max 48.6 ± 7.4 ml-1×kg-1×min-1, BMI 23.5 ± 2.4 kg×m2) performed a VO2maxtest. They were randomized to four sessions of either high intensity sprint interval training (SPRINT, n=10, 5 × 30-sec at >95 of HRpeak, 4-min recovery between intervals), high intensity aerobic interval …
