Determination Of (N, 2n) Reaction Cross-Sections For 71ga, 106cd & 138ba Using 14 Mev Neutrons, Thomas Helm Jul 1970

Determination Of (N, 2n) Reaction Cross-Sections For 71ga, 106cd & 138ba Using 14 Mev Neutrons, Thomas Helm

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The increasing trend towards the use of activation analysis as an analytic means of identifying elements and determining their relative abundance demands more accurate values of reaction cross-sections. Accurate values of cross-sections are also important in the investigation of possible shell effects in reaction mechanisms. Many activation cross-sections for reactions produced by 14 MeV neutrons have been measured because of the relative ease with which this energy of neutrons can be produced. Low voltage accelerators are capable of producing 14. MeV neutrons by the 3H( d,n)4He reaction. Although many people(1-5) have measured the (n,2n) reaction cross-sections …

The Dominative Woman & Blasco Ibáňez, Joseph Mills Jul 1970

The Dominative Woman & Blasco Ibáňez, Joseph Mills

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Although certain critics have mentioned Blasco Ibáñez’s women characters in their writings, they often relegate these persons to a subordinate role relevant to the development of the plot and of the philosophy of the author. Many of the earlier critics have mentioned the importance of the setting in Blasco Ibáñez’s novels, as did James O. Swain when he wrote in 1935, “Especially in his Valencian novels, Arroz y Tartana, Flor de Mayo, La barraca, and Cañas y barro, does the setting play an important role.” As recently as 1961, Sherman Eoff has pointed out how characterization is secondary to …

Determination Of The Time Delay In The Arrival Of Jovian Signals At Opposite Ends Of A Long Baseline Fringe Synthesis Interferometer, Roger Scott Jul 1970

Determination Of The Time Delay In The Arrival Of Jovian Signals At Opposite Ends Of A Long Baseline Fringe Synthesis Interferometer, Roger Scott

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In order to determine the size of the decametric sources, the technique of long baseline radio interferometry is being employed. The University of Florida at Gainesville is a pioneer in this field. In 1964, T. D. Carr introduced the procedure of recording the signals received at each end of an interferometer on magnetic tape and comparing the re-corded signals at a later time. This eliminated the necessity for transmission lines over the length of the baseline, allowing greater separation to attain higher resolution.

Ideology & Sociology: The Predisposition To Believe, W. Miles Stryker Jul 1970

Ideology & Sociology: The Predisposition To Believe, W. Miles Stryker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

It is one of the main contentions of this presentation that a discipline such as sociology must constantly refer to the socio-cultural circumstances within which it operates, in order to make decisions concerning the expansion or contraction of the area of phenomena it is attempting to analyze and study. Relevancy, admittedly, is a value based on an ideological assumption, but within the confines of this presentation remains a very important one; one which establishes both a direction toward which it is felt sociology must move as well as a base from which it must be extended.

William Faulkner As Sociologist: An Adventure In The Sociology Of Literature, Katherine Stuart Jul 1970

William Faulkner As Sociologist: An Adventure In The Sociology Of Literature, Katherine Stuart

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

My basic problem will be not to prove that Faulkner is, was, a sociologist or to suggest that his works be required reading in courses in sociological theory, but rather, to show in what sense and what areas his and the role of sociologist overlap. A. thorough reading of the major Faulkner novels, a sorting-out and. probing of his passages relevant to the field of sociology seems the most productive way to begin tackling the problem. First the effort will be made to grasp his ideas in context, then to extricate and analyze them out of context. The relationship of …

The Colonelette (July 1970), Department Of Library Special Collections

The Colonelette

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

The Effect Of Presidential Action On Popular Support Of Foreign Policy: The Case Of Vietnam, William Hines Jr. Jul 1970

The Effect Of Presidential Action On Popular Support Of Foreign Policy: The Case Of Vietnam, William Hines Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Explicitly stated the hypothesis that was tested was as follows: The relationship between Presidential action and an increase in public support for the President on matters of Vietnam policy is equal to zero.

Presidential action was viewed as any major development in Policy (whether it be military or political) toward the war. Furthermore, any major speech by the President or other high governmental official reaffirming the government's course of action was posited into the category of Presidential action. In order for the speech to be considered "major" it either had to have been broadcast over nationwide television or widely disseminated …

The Implications Of The Holy Trinity & Its Antithesis In Billy Budd, Nancy Locke Jul 1970

The Implications Of The Holy Trinity & Its Antithesis In Billy Budd, Nancy Locke

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There have been a number of books and articles written about the theological underpinnings of the novel Billy Budd by Herman Melville and about the symbolic characters which he created. Several critics have brought some of this material together, but no one has really attempted to correlate the basic studies. This thesis will not only endeavor to do this, but it will add, as well, a personal interpretation of the theological content of the work.

Effects Of Ensiling On The Hcn Potential Of Sorghum Plants, Glenn Mccarty Jul 1970

Effects Of Ensiling On The Hcn Potential Of Sorghum Plants, Glenn Mccarty

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of ensiling on HCN potential (HCN-p) of sorghum plants were studied at Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1969-70. Four cultivars were sampled at various growth stages and ensiled in 1.8 liter glass containers fitted with gas release valves. The plant material was analyzed for HCN-p by the sodium picrate procedure prior to ensiling, immediately after being removed from the silo, and after 24 and 48 hours of air-drying. Gases released during ensiling, and gases flushed from the silos were analyzed for HCN. The level of HCN-p decreased during the ensiling period and during the first 24-hour drying period. Some …

Reactions Of Pollen-Pistil Combinations In Vitro & Their Relationships To Compatibility In Alfalfa, Emerson Shipe Jul 1970

Reactions Of Pollen-Pistil Combinations In Vitro & Their Relationships To Compatibility In Alfalfa, Emerson Shipe

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Reactions of in vitro pollen-pistil combinations were studied and related to compatibility differences in Buffalo alfalfa Medicago sativa L.) at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green. Pollen-pistil combinations were made at random among a number of alfalfa plants in 1968 (Experiment I). Pollen tube elongation varied significantly when -4 pollen from the same plant was placed on agar media containing pistils from different plants. Three of four plants for which intra-plant combinations (pollen and pistils from same plants) were made 1,ad tube lengths significantly shorter than those measured for inter-plant combinations (pollen and pistils from different plants).

Similar in vitro pollen-pistil …

Green River Steamboating A Cultural History, 1828-1931, Helen Bartter Crocker Jul 1970

Green River Steamboating A Cultural History, 1828-1931, Helen Bartter Crocker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In recent years, historians have displayed a growing interest in the cultural development of certain well-defined regions. Often a river valley inspired such a study, for example, R.E. Banta’s The Ohio, Thomas Clark’s The Kentucky and Harriette Arnow’s Seedtime on the Cumberland. These and many other river histories dealt less with the river itself than with its tendency to define and alter an area’s culture

This thesis, dealing with the culture of Green River’s steamboat era, is less about the steamboat or Green River than it is about their effect on river people. It searches the area’s homes, schools, business …

A Critical Study Of The Dramas Of Four Major Romantic Poets, Earl Murphy Jr. Jun 1970

A Critical Study Of The Dramas Of Four Major Romantic Poets, Earl Murphy Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Since little critical attention has been given to the dramas of this period, it would seem that further examination of them would be of value. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to investigate the dramas of the major Romantic poets in order to provide a new critical perspective on their plays specifically and Romantic drama generally. From this it is hoped useful conclusions can be drawn. The study will be limited to the plays of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Wordsworth, and George Gordon, Lord Byron. John Keats has been omitted from this group because his only …
