The Social Construction Of Professional Knowledge Illustrative Empirical Patterns In Social Work, 1956-1973, Danny L. Jorgensen Jul 1974

The Social Construction Of Professional Knowledge Illustrative Empirical Patterns In Social Work, 1956-1973, Danny L. Jorgensen

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Traditional sociological conceptions of professions are examined in this thesis by refocusing attention upon knowledge and ideology as a key to understanding changes in professional reality and action. In a proposed transcending model of professional knowledge it is hypothesized that conflicts between certain ideological positions will result in the displacement of one position by an opposing position and thereby produce changes in the definition and meaning of specific aspects of professional knowledge. Furthermore, it is suggested that knowledge construction, ideological debate, and changes in professional meaning may be observed in the arena of professional communication which is represented by major …

A Study Of The Effect Of Youth Tutoring Upon Attitude & Achievement Of Tutors & Tutees, Sarah Harrison

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The general problem to which this study was directed was the effect upon attitude and achievement of eighth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students, some of whom were underachievers themselves, tutoring other underachieving elementary school students.

In order to analyze this general problem, answers were sought to the following questions:

  1. Will the tutors demonstrate greater improvement than pupils in the control group in specific attitudinal and achievement areas?
  2. Will the tutors demonstrate greater improvement than the tutees in specific attitudinal and achievement areas?
  3. Will the tutors who are underachieving at the outset of the program demonstrate greater improvement than the tutors …

Ultraviolet Photosimulated Thermoluminescence Of Lithium Flouride, Martin Payne Jul 1974

Ultraviolet Photosimulated Thermoluminescence Of Lithium Flouride, Martin Payne

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

TLD-100 (lithium fluoride) thermoluminescence dosimeters are widely employed for the detection of ionizing radiations. This paper shows that these dosimeters may also serve as practical germicidal ultraviolet radiation dosimeters. To measure ultraviolet radiation, the TLD-100 dosimeters are first exposed to 500,000 roentgens of gamma radiation and then annealed at 300°C. Subsequent dosage of ultraviolet radiation may be determined by observation of photostimulated thermoluminescence of the crystal. The presented data indicate that the thermoluminescence response is linear for exposures up to 6,000 µjoule/cm2 and independent of exposure rate from 0.1 µ watt/cm2 to above 50 µwatt/cm2. Optical …

The Growth Of Anti-British Attitudes In Kentucky Prior To War Of 1812, Edward Pippin Jr. Jun 1974

The Growth Of Anti-British Attitudes In Kentucky Prior To War Of 1812, Edward Pippin Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study is to examine the causes of belligerency in Kentucky in this period of diplomatic crisis, thus examining the second level of causation for the war as suggested by Brown's study. The test case used is Kentucky which was known as one of the states most anxious for war against Britain, both in Congress and in the state itself. However, this study will not attempt to interpret the role of the state's representatives in the Congress of the United States, since, if Brown is correct in his interpretation, the causes of public belligerency had little to …
