Governmental Policy & Stages Of Development In The Education Of Indian Americans, Janet Metcalf Aug 1975

Governmental Policy & Stages Of Development In The Education Of Indian Americans, Janet Metcalf

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A descriptive analytical study was done of the influence of Federal government policies on the present economic and educational status of Indian Americans.

Three Perspective views underlying government actions toward Indians were identified. The policy of extermination manifested itself in open conflict and the removal of Indian tribes to reservations. This segregation intensified Indian poverty and retarded educational development. The paternalism underlying the special wardship status of Indians created a sense of powerlessness in which Indians felt alienated from the decision-making process. Assimilation policies which were in essence Anglo-conformist policies were strongly followed in many government boarding schools. Anglo-conformity techniques …

Richard Iii & Elizabethan Kingship, Frances Perdue Aug 1975

Richard Iii & Elizabethan Kingship, Frances Perdue

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In this study Richard III's character, motivations, and his path to the throne were examined as they affect the well-being of the country. Analyzed were the political, social, and moral philosophies of Elizabethan England and how they conflicted with Richard's Machiavellian tactics in achieving and holding the position of king. The necessity of purging Richard III from the throne was shown to be consistent with the Elizabethan concept of God's will for the good of the country. "Macbeth" and "Hamlet" revealed the idea that the health of the nation depends on the moral health of the king. In "Coriolanus," another …

Electronic Transitions Of Metal Complexes With Triphenylphosphine As A Ligand, Thomas Zimmer Aug 1975

Electronic Transitions Of Metal Complexes With Triphenylphosphine As A Ligand, Thomas Zimmer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The spectra of transition metal complexes with triphenylphosphine have been measured near 260 nm and the results interpreted in terms of perturbation of the it electron system of the phenyl ring. All complexes studied show sou degree of delocalization of the d-orbital electrons of the metal into the phenyl ring. However, for first row transition metals, the primary affect was found to be polarization of the phenyl ring due to the presence of the metal ion. For second and third row transition metal ions, the primary effect was found to be metal-ligand back-bonding. However, the effect of polarization of the …

Influence Of Sex Role Stereotypes On Ratings Of Male And Female Behavior, Constance Barclay Jul 1975

Influence Of Sex Role Stereotypes On Ratings Of Male And Female Behavior, Constance Barclay

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

An attempt was made to investigate the extent to which individuals are unknowingly influenced by a sex role stereotype in their evaluations of men and women. It was hypothesized that subjects would describe a character in more potency-related, “masculine” terms if that character had been identified as a male than if the character had been identified as a female. Subjects taking part in this study were an equal number of male and female students in introductory psychology classes. The semantic differential technique was employed as a descriptive tool for the subjects’ evaluations of a character they read about in a …

Secular & Ministerial Counseling In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Henry Darke Jul 1975

Secular & Ministerial Counseling In Bowling Green, Kentucky, Henry Darke

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Samples from two populations, community ministers and secular counselors, were surveyed to develop and analyze a description of the perceptions between and among these groups concerning their roles as counselors in the total community. Five questions were the focus of the research. The results of these questions may be summarized as follows: 1) both sample groups agreed that there seemed to be a need for additional ministerial counselors; 2) almost unanimously, the secular counselors indicated that they would welcome a more active ministerial counseling involvement within the total community setting, although a considerable portion (41%) of the ministers expressed doubts …

A Study Of Elementary Guidance Programs In University Laboratory Schools In The United States, Joann Walker

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This project is a study of the role and functions of the elementary school guidance counselor in the laboratory schools of universities in the United States. It was intended to gain data on the status of the role at the present, functions performed by the counselors in these schools, and information which could be used as a basis for projection of the future role of the elementary school counselor. The laboratory schools were surveyed, the data compiled and an analysis was made. The results were not as future oriented as was expected from the population studied. Techniques and functions were …

Comparative Bioenergetics Of Insects From Young & Old Plant Ecosystems, Joyce Wright Jul 1975

Comparative Bioenergetics Of Insects From Young & Old Plant Ecosystems, Joyce Wright

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Caloric values of insects and arachnids from two woods and two meadow ecosystems were compared. No significant difference was found between the orders Diptera, Homoptera, Orthoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, or Coleoptera. Caloric values of the class Arachnida were significantly higher in the woods ecosystem at the .05 level of significance. The order Lepidoptera differed at the .01 level of significance and was also higher in the woods samples. For all orders combined the caloric values of the woods samples were higher than the meadow samples at the .001 level of significance.

No consistent pattern was found in seasonal variation in caloric …

Cognitive Reflection-Impulsivity & Susceptibility To A Primary Illusion, Maureen Murphy Jul 1975

Cognitive Reflection-Impulsivity & Susceptibility To A Primary Illusion, Maureen Murphy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The relationship between the reflection-impulsivity dimension of cognitive style and susceptibility to the Mueller Lyer illusion was investigated in nine year old children. Forty-four subjects, classified as either impulsive or reflective on the Matching Familiar Figures Test, were presented the Mueller Lyer figure under two viewing conditions, unrestricted exposure time and restricted exposure time of .1 second. It was expected that reflective children would be less susceptible to this illusion under the unrestricted condition than the impulsive children. Less difference between reflective and impulsive children was expected when exposure time was restricted. Results confirmed earlier studies that restricted exposure time …

Toward A Typology Of Riotous Behavior Studies: Relationships Between Conceptual Areas & Methodological Techniques In Sociological Research, Maryline Glover Jul 1975

Toward A Typology Of Riotous Behavior Studies: Relationships Between Conceptual Areas & Methodological Techniques In Sociological Research, Maryline Glover

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A typology was developed to demonstrate the relationship between the diverse theoretical explanations prevalent in riotous behavior research and the mode of data collection utilized for studying these theoretical explanations. The two principal variables identified are conceptual areas and methodological techniques. Conceptual areas consist of five categories and these are defined as structure: underlying social. economic and political preconditions which lead to riotous behavior; belief-motives: underlying predispositions of individuals or groups which lead to riotous behavior; setting: immediate determinants (assemblage process. ecological arrangements and socio-demographic factors) which lead to riotous behavior; action-behavior: actual behavior patterns and general characteristics found in …

Polonius, The Man Behind The Arras: A Study Of His Archetypal Significance, Elizabeth Oakes Jul 1975

Polonius, The Man Behind The Arras: A Study Of His Archetypal Significance, Elizabeth Oakes

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

On the archetypal level of Hamlet, Polonius embodies three roles--the wise old man, the fool, and the scapegoat-- in a schema composed also of embodiments of the archetypal hero-prince, the anima, the racial father, the shadow, the terrible mother, and the night sea journey. Polonius as an incarnation of the wise old man archetype has both a positive side, which is denoted in his relationship to Ophelia, and a negative side, which is shown in his relationship to Hamlet. From the wise old man, Polonius degenerates into the archetypal fool who, being on the periphery of the social order, constantly …

The Life History Of The Teardrop Darter, Etheostoma Barbouri Kuehne And Small, In Kentucky, Rory Flynn Jul 1975

The Life History Of The Teardrop Darter, Etheostoma Barbouri Kuehne And Small, In Kentucky, Rory Flynn

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The life history of the teardrop darter, Etheoctoma (Catonotus) barbouri Kuehne and Small, was intensively studied from September, 1972, through August 1973. A total of 299 teardrop darters was seined from two isolated populations in Alexander and Little Muddy Creeks, Kentucky. These darters are known only to occur in second, third or fourth order tributaries of the Green River in Kentucky and Tennessee, and normally seek protection afforded by rocky or vegetated edges of such streams.

Gonosomatic ratios indicated that teardrop darters spawned from late March through late May in waters 12.5 - 15.5 C. Young females developed primary ova …

Effects Of Intervention Programs On The Self Concept Of Rural Preschool Children, Virginia Miller Jul 1975

Effects Of Intervention Programs On The Self Concept Of Rural Preschool Children, Virginia Miller

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of intervention programs on the self concept of rural preschool children were examined using 86 children, ages 5 to 6 1/2 years, who had and had not had preschool experience. The relationships between the Total Self Concept and the subscales of Body Image, Competence, and Social Interactions to the variables of socio-economic level, sex, and preschool experience were determined. Significant differences (p <.001) were found between the different population variables and the Total Self Concept score, and the subscale scores of Body Image, Competence, and Social Interactions. The locations of these differences were determined by a Newman Kuel analysis. Significant effects (p<.05) on sex differences were found on Total Self Concept scale and on the Competence subscale. There were no significant (p <.05) interaction effects. Implications of these findings were discussed.

An Elementary Physical Education Curriculum For Jones-Jaggers Laboratory School, Joanne Powell Jul 1975

An Elementary Physical Education Curriculum For Jones-Jaggers Laboratory School, Joanne Powell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This project proposes the utilization of a movement education approach in a physical education curriculum for elementary school grades one through six. It is intended to assist elementary physical education teachers in establishing and maintaining a program based on current research and literature in the field.

The movement education philosophy differs from the traditional physical education approach in the following ways:

  1. The program is child-centered rather than subject-centered with successful experiences for each child of prime importance.

  2. Consideration of the affective domain is as necessary to the program as the psychomotor.

  3. Creativity is encouraged in that the teacher seeks new …

The Effects Of Manipulation Of Examination Results On Locus Of Control Beliefs, Douglas Doyle Jul 1975

The Effects Of Manipulation Of Examination Results On Locus Of Control Beliefs, Douglas Doyle

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study investigated the effects of manipulated feedback concerning examination performance on locus of control beliefs. Brecher and Denmark (1972) found that students given manipulated feedback concerning results of a recent examination exhibited a significant increase in their I-E scores. In the present study, 84 students enrolled in one of three classes of a lower level, undergraduate Psychology course at Western Kentucky University, taught by the same instructor, were used as subjects. These subjects were administered the I-E Scale and about one month later took a regularly scheduled examination over course material. The first clans session after the exam, …

Molly Bloom: From Literal To Anagogical, Georgia Disman Jul 1975

Molly Bloom: From Literal To Anagogical, Georgia Disman

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study attempts to present Molly Bloom, the major fem.ale character in Joyce's prose-satire, Ulysses, as an intentional fourfold corrective for the traditional interpretation of the female principle. Her speeches and actions are examined to reveal her positive significance as part of the Stephen-Molly-Bloom triad, and through her various manifestations of the female principle she comes to represent a major force in the world of Ulysses. Specifically, Molly's role as the new poetic muse and her ability to reinterpret both Christian and Eastern female religious figures are probed. Although Molly may be seen as a corrective on all …

Human Love And Divine Love: The Platonic Matrix In C.S. Lewis, Laura Case Jul 1975

Human Love And Divine Love: The Platonic Matrix In C.S. Lewis, Laura Case

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A comparison of the writings of Plato and C.S. Lewis reveals a common idea that human love is not sufficient for man. An examination of Plato’s Symposium and Lewis’s Till We Have Faces and The Four Loves, in particular, shows that both writers illustrate that man must ascend the ladder of love in order to meet the source of all love: Divine Love. Concerned with man’s innate needs and ethics, both Plato and Lewis argue that there is a universal principle of goodness known to all men of all cultures. Lewis argues, especially in The Abolition of Man, that man …

Performance Attitudes Toward Read Or Imagined Events In “Scenes Of Passion And Despair” By Joyce Carol Oates, Bruce Creed Jul 1975

Performance Attitudes Toward Read Or Imagined Events In “Scenes Of Passion And Despair” By Joyce Carol Oates, Bruce Creed

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The object of this study is to examine the diction of “Scenes of Passion and Despair” by Joyce Carol Oates in an attempt to discover performative attitudes for the interpreter. The discussion centers on the theme of illusion and reality as it manifests itself in the story. Because this theme superimposes itself on diction, it becomes necessary to examine words in detail, searching for the manner in which words are used to create a certain degree of reality for each character of the story. The discovery of these realities reassures the interpreter that his is a faithful rendering of one …
