Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
It doesn’t take a genius to see that everything is not quite right in higher education these days. The feeling that things can’t go on as they have in the past is slowing sinking in for those associated with our colleges and universities. A day of reckoning is coming.
As most college students can attest, the cost of attending college continues to escalate exponentially while the return on that investment is increasingly suspect. The average student loan debt incurred per student is around $38,000, while the average annual salary a newly minted college graduate in Kentucky can expect to earn …

Use Of Sources In Ancient Compositions, James W. Barker
Use Of Sources In Ancient Compositions, James W. Barker
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
This essay contextualizes the Synoptic Gospels in terms of ancient writing materials and processes. Greco-Roman writers predominantly used waxed tablets and bookrolls, although codices emerged in the first century CE. Authors could recall texts from memory, but writers could also maintain visual contact when studying, collating, copying, quoting, or paraphrasing sources. Previous scholarship has highlighted the difficulties of interweaving multiple sources and rearranging their sayings and narratives. However, neither operation was unprecedented or overly complicated, as evinced by Septuagint recensions, Josephus’s Antiquities, and Tatian’s Diatessaron. Some writing processes were more complicated than others, but ancient authors did not always work …

Difference Of Elbow Extension Velocity During Flat And Mound Throwing, Omar Arizpe, Joshua Perez, Bryon C. Applequist
Difference Of Elbow Extension Velocity During Flat And Mound Throwing, Omar Arizpe, Joshua Perez, Bryon C. Applequist
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In baseball, players encounter varying forms of throwing that is dependent upon position. Pitchers often throw on a mound, while position players are seen throwing from a flat ground. The throwing motion of a baseball consists of six phases: wind-up, stride, late cocking, acceleration, deceleration, and follow through. Each of these different phases consists of velocities being produced from the lower body through the elbow, which contributes to a potential cause of throwing arm injuries. Given the prominence of elbow injuries to pitchers, investigation into the solution to reducing arm injuries has continued to gain traction. PURPOSE: The purpose …

Comparison Of Cognitive Performance Following One Hour Of Passive Heating Or Walking In Older Adults: A Preliminary Analysis, Cayla Clark, Nicole Varone, Alyssa Flores, Joseph Mallillin, Colby Morse, Brandon R. Rigby
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Moderate-intensity exercise increases measures of cognitive performance such as working memory and cognitive flexibility. Hyperthermia can result in declines in cognitive performance through reduced motor function and response inhibition. However, these results have been observed during cognitive performance in the heat while core temperatures remain elevated. Heat therapy may promote improvements in cognitive function after treatment similar to exercise training by inducing a stress-related response. The purpose of this study was to compare cognitive performance immediately following one hour of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or one hour of whole-body passive heating. METHODS: Four adults (age: 67.3 + 3.3 years, BMI: …

Kinetic And Kinematic Difference Between The First And Second Landing Of A Single Leg Drop Vertical Landing Task, Chenyang Li
Kinetic And Kinematic Difference Between The First And Second Landing Of A Single Leg Drop Vertical Landing Task, Chenyang Li
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The drop vertical jump is commonly used to assess the biomechanical performance of athletes, both for screening for injury risk and for assessing return-to-play readiness. These assessments rely only on the performance of the first landing and the implications of the second landing have been largely ignored. The second landing, however, better simulates the mechanics of rebounding tasks which are most often associated with greater ACL injury risk. PURPOSE: To analyze the differences in kinetic and kinematic metrics at the knee joint during the first and second landings of the single-leg drop vertical jump. METHODS: Seven younger adults …
Effects Of Acute Bouts Of Aerobic Exercise On Adipokines In Individuals With Mid-Spectrum Chronic Kidney Disease, Tomas J. Chapman-Lopez, J. Kyle Taylor, Ricardo Torres, Li Qian, Kathy Dugan, S. Robin Latchem, Leslee K. Funderburk, Jeffrey S. Forsse
Effects Of Acute Bouts Of Aerobic Exercise On Adipokines In Individuals With Mid-Spectrum Chronic Kidney Disease, Tomas J. Chapman-Lopez, J. Kyle Taylor, Ricardo Torres, Li Qian, Kathy Dugan, S. Robin Latchem, Leslee K. Funderburk, Jeffrey S. Forsse
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Adipokines have been known to influence various health-related complications such as chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular diseases. Fluctuations in adipokines are commonly seen from changes in body composition, however, some evidence shows acute changes may be seen from exercise. Individuals with CKD are commonly characterized by a decline in renal filtration and systemic inflammation. It may be possible that an acute bout of aerobic exercise may improve pro- and anti-inflammatory adipokine concentrations typically seen in individuals with moderate stages of CKD. PURPOSE: To determine the acute effects of aerobic exercise on adipokine concentrations in individuals with moderate stages …
Effects Of Motivational Music On Post-Exercise Recovery, Damaris Thrash, Shannon L. Jordan
Effects Of Motivational Music On Post-Exercise Recovery, Damaris Thrash, Shannon L. Jordan
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Previous literature suggests “motivational” music has a tempo between 120-140 bpm to elicit positive responses to exercise performance. While music that is considered “motivational” has been known to elicit a positive response during exercise performance, it’s impact on exercise recovery has not been determined. PURPOSE: To examine responses of physiological variables to motivational music during the exercise recovery period. Hypothesis: calm music, or no music would allow the participants to recover more quickly during the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) period. METHODS: This study consisted of 10 healthy, college-aged (19-25 years) individuals (6 M, 4F). Participants performed the Bruce treadmill …
Pressurized Device For Mitigating Atrophy In Soleus During Long-Duration Spaceflight, Ramona Tovar Briones, Kimhab Sor, Breandrea Diaz, Dona Varghese, Benjamin Easter, Hunter Alvis, Brandon R. Rigby
Pressurized Device For Mitigating Atrophy In Soleus During Long-Duration Spaceflight, Ramona Tovar Briones, Kimhab Sor, Breandrea Diaz, Dona Varghese, Benjamin Easter, Hunter Alvis, Brandon R. Rigby
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
A major concern with long duration spaceflight, skeletal muscle atrophy is most detrimental in lower limb musculature, particularly in muscles critical for proper gait, such as the soleus. The decline of muscle activation and the suppression of sensory input from plantar sole mechanoreceptors can add to the attenuation of skeletal muscle health during spaceflight. More specifically, inhibition of sensory input from sole receptors, such as with gravitational unloading, decreases selective activation, thereby negatively affecting muscle tone and inevitably resulting in lower limb atrophy. PURPOSE: To design, fabricate, and test a specialized boot with an insole that applies oscillating pneumatic …
Comparison Of Static Flexibility And Balance In Older Adults Engaging In Balance Training Activities, Jack Hansen, Vanessa Mikan Phd
Comparison Of Static Flexibility And Balance In Older Adults Engaging In Balance Training Activities, Jack Hansen, Vanessa Mikan Phd
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Around 36 million falls are reported among older adults each year, with 32,000 of those falls resulting in death (CDC, 2022). In recent studies, correlations have been made between a lack of muscle flexibility and body balance and a lack of balance and poor walking ability (Iwamoto et al., 2009). As a result, balance improvement and flexibility gains allow for a better quality of life (Chang et al., 2010). PURPOSE: To compare the static flexibility and static balance in older adults (50-75 years old) who have (a) participated in balance performance training (Tai Chi, yoga, Pilates, etc.) for four or …
