An Alternate To Accumulated Oxygen Deficit (Aod) For Measuring Anaerobic Contribution: ‘Aodalt’ Is Valid In Normoxia And Hypoxia, Austin Shaw, John Michael Mihalek, David W. Hill
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD) is the gold standard measure of anaerobic contribution; however, its calculation requires several contentious assumptions and it is time-consuming, requiring participants to perform a number of submaximal exercise bouts to establish exercise efficiency. A new method, AODalt, requires performance of only a single bout of exercise, and is based on the presumption that the fast phase of the post-exercise oxygen uptake (VO2) profile reflects the alactic or phosphocreatine (PCr) contribution and that the exercise-induced increase in blood lactate concentration is quantitatively related to the lactic or glycolytic contribution representing a measure of total anaerobic …

Effect Of Hypoxia On Vo2 Kinetics And Aerobic And Anaerobic Contributions In Severe Intensity Cycling Exercise, Ethan J. Hein, John Michael Mihalek, Austin B. Shaw, David W. Hill
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
During severe intensity exercise performed at altitude or under hypoxic conditions, there is little room for a compensatory increase in cardiorespiratory responses above those associated with VO2max in normoxia, as VO2max (the limit for a compensatory response) will be reduced compared to normoxia values. Although there is little involving research in the severe domain in a very low FiO2 (FiO2 < 11%), there were mixed findings compared to the heavy intensity exercise, mainly due to different study designs. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hypoxia on VO2 kinetics and metabolic responses during severe intensity exercise. METHODS: In this study, four women (23 ± 1 y) and two …

Alcohol-Mediated Changes In Myoblast Hif-1Α Protein Expression And Relationships With Decreased Differentiation Capacity: A Preliminary Analysis, Colby Newman, Alexandra Khartabil, Matthew Dileo, Zenaida Villalba, Danielle Levitt
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Alcohol-mediated myopathy, or decreased functional skeletal muscle (SKM) mass, is highly prevalent among individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). SKM regeneration aids in maintaining functional SKM muscle mass. Using an in vitro (myoblast) model, we showed that alcohol (EtOH) treatment decreases differentiation capacity in association with decreased glycolytic function, but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. Hypoxia-inducible factor (Hif)-1α is a transcription factor that promotes glycolysis, the bioenergetic pathway that primarily supports myoblast energetic demands. EtOH can increase or decrease Hif-1α expression in various cell types, but this has not been assessed in myoblasts. PURPOSE: Test the hypothesis that alcohol …
