International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are prevalent in sports, affecting approximately 100,000 to 200,000 athletes each year. Notably, one in three individuals with an ACL injury develop osteoarthritis within a decade. In addition to knee cartilage deterioration, osteoarthritis is linked to a heightened risk of hypertension and aortic stiffness, risk factors associated with the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, it remains unclear whether an ACL injury directly contributes to increased blood pressure and aortic stiffness. PURPOSE: Assess brachial blood pressure and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) as a proxy measure of aortic stiffness in young adults with a …

Effect Of Barefoot Strength Training On Time To Stabilization And Ankle Inversion During Single-Leg Drop Landing In Ncaa Division I Female Volleyball Players, Logan Manley, Sydney Leisz, Trevor Gillum, William Boyer, Jared Coburn
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
When volleyball players land from a jump, there is a large energy transfer that occurs throughout the kinetic chain. Time to stabilization (TTS) is a measure that represents the ability to control ground reaction forces (GRF) upon landing. Ankle inversion (INV) angles upon landing also represent the risk of ankle injury due to forceful inversion of the ankle joint. Prior research has found differing risk for injury when accounting for volleyball sport-specific limb dominance and inter-limb asymmetries. A joint is weakened when exposed to repetitive landing movements, putting it at a higher risk of injury due to continual absorption of …

Roughly 25% of people who exercise to lower blood pressure (BP) do not see a BP reduction following exercise training. Post-exercise hypotension (PEH) has been shown to predict training exercise responses. Past data is inconclusive as to whether or not BMI influences PEH. PURPOSE: This pilot study will determine whether anthropometric and body composition variables differ between PEH responders and non-responders in college-aged subjects. METHODS: Men and women aged 18-30 yr. completed an initial 30-minute moderate-intensity cycling exercise session. Subjects were classified as "responders" if their systolic or diastolic BP decreased following exercise, as measured by the average …

New sports supplements with high amounts of sodium have started showing up on the market; thus, research examining how large-dose sodium intake affects cycling performance is necessary. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of a high dose of sodium on hydration measures during a 2-hour cycling bout in a hot (30°C) and humid (60% relative humidity) environment. METHODS: Nine recreationally active participants (6 males, 3 females; age = 22.22 ± 1.99yrs; weight = 79.93 ± 18.78 kg) completed 2-hours of cycling in an environmental chamber on two separate occasions with at least one week between trials. Participants were instructed …
