The Acute And Chronic Effect Of Korea Ginseng Supplement On Exercise Performance, Cognitive Function, And Fatigue Recovery, Gina Ok, Hyun Chul Jung, Nan Hee Lee, Minsoo Kang, Young Chan Kim, Sukho Lee

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The purpose of this study was to determine the acute and chronic effects of Korean ginseng supplements on exercise performance, cognitive function, and fatigue recovery. The study used double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design. Twelve healthy adult males (age = 31 ± 6.86 yrs) were randomly assigned to either KGD or placebo trials. All subjects conducted the exercise consisted with 30 minutes cycling at 70-75% of VO2 max followed by 16 km time trial with 30 minutes resting periods. All subjects were tested for muscular power, strength, endurance, cognitive function, and fatigue. The subjects took KGD (280 ml containing 5.88 mg …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Is Evident In Lewis Lung Carcinoma-Induced Muscle Wasting, Conner Benson, David E. Lee, Nicholas P. Greene, Jacob L. Brown, Megan E. Rosa, Tyrone A. Washington, Michael P. Wiggs

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cancer cachexia is a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with adverse prognosis and shortened survival. The defining feature of cachexia is extensive muscle atrophy leading to progressive functional impairments. The molecular mechanisms responsible for the rapid muscle wasting are not fully elucidated. Based on emerging evidence, we developed the hypothesis cachectic muscle wasting is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction increasing reactive oxygen species production leading to global oxidative stress. To test this hypothesis we utilized the well-established Lewis-Lung Carcinoma (LLC) model of cancer cachexia. The time-course study consisted of one, two, three and four week LLC tumor bearing mice and age-matched four week …

Comparison Of Cardiorespiratory Responses During Body Weight-Supported Treadmill And Standard Treadmill Exercise, Kaitlyn N. Abruzzese, Desiree Patterson, Christopher Irvine, Matthew Brisebois, Kyle Biggerstaff Feb 2016

Comparison Of Cardiorespiratory Responses During Body Weight-Supported Treadmill And Standard Treadmill Exercise, Kaitlyn N. Abruzzese, Desiree Patterson, Christopher Irvine, Matthew Brisebois, Kyle Biggerstaff

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Treadmills that partially support body weight are increasingly being used in athletic rehabilitation settings. The cardiorespiratory response during this type of exercise has been reported in very few published studies. This study was designed to determine the cardiorespiratory response during three exercise intensities during standard treadmill exercise (ST) and body weight-supported treadmill exercise (BWST). In random order, a total of 10 healthy, 18-44 yr old adults (6 males, 4 females) performed BWST and ST trials. Identical exercise sessions were performed on each treadmill except 25% of body weight was supported during BWST exercise such that each participant carried 75% of …

Treatment With Euk-134 Enhance Anabolic Akt/Mtor/P70s6kinase Pathways, Protecting Against Muscle Atrophy In The Rat Soleus In A 7 Day Hindlimb Unloading, Dinah A. Rodriguez, Jeff M. Hord, John M. Lawler Feb 2016

Treatment With Euk-134 Enhance Anabolic Akt/Mtor/P70s6kinase Pathways, Protecting Against Muscle Atrophy In The Rat Soleus In A 7 Day Hindlimb Unloading, Dinah A. Rodriguez, Jeff M. Hord, John M. Lawler

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Muscle atrophy occurs with mechanical unloading, disease and aging. Mechanical unloading occurs with bedrest, microgravity, and casting/immobilization, all of which elicit the unloading-induced phenotype: (a) reduction of muscle fiber cross-section area (CSA) and (b) a shift from slow-twitch to fast-twitch muscle fibers. Unloading-induces muscle fiber atrophy appears to be a consequence of both decrease in contractile protein synthesis combined with increased protein catabolism. Oxidative stress has been cited as potential contributing factor to the unloading phenotype, although the mechanisms remain unresolved and controversial. We recently reported that a superoxide dismutase/catalase mimetic (EUK-134) reduced muscle atrophy, fiber-type shift, and pro-catabolic signaling. …
