Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Approximately one year ago, I founded an experimental theater group on the campus of Western Kentucky University called The Corporate Surrealists of America. The group is made up of artists from radically different departments and disciplines and is focused on fostering an alternative kind of performance that is both richly multi-disciplinary and seriously concerned with burning political, social, and historical issues. One of the group’s main tenets has been to attempt to make art in the periphery of an institution as much as possible. Several thrilling independent productions were mounted including NIGHT RAID, WITH THESE MY HANDS OF THE …

In Defense Of Adaptation: Aestheticism Versus Functionalism In The Wicked Franchise, Amanda S. Adams
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
This project serves as an extended case study on the adaptability of an aesthetic text into a popular text. It focuses on Gregory Maguire’s original novel Wicked, which drew its inspiration from the universally known land of Oz, and the subsequent stage adaptation by the same name. The first half of the project involves an extensive text-to-stage analysis, delineating the differences between the two mediums. The second half of the project involves an examination of the sequels to the original novel as commodities. Each of the novels is a literary text created for a narrower audience, while the popular …

The Japanimated Folktale: Analysis Concerning The Use And Adaptation Of Folktale Characteristics In Anime, Amber N. Slaven
The Japanimated Folktale: Analysis Concerning The Use And Adaptation Of Folktale Characteristics In Anime, Amber N. Slaven
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In this thesis, I examine the relationship between folk tales and Japanese animation, or anime. In spite of the popular association between animation and adolescence, animated television series and films have a dynamic and compelling relationship with various age groups and nationalities. Additionally, anime and animation draw liberally from a number of folk tale traditions. Consequently, in this essay, anime is understood as a global phenomenon that draws on international cultural elements and is consumed in several international markets.
Before entering an analysis of the use of folk tales in anime, a history of animation and the place of …

Tap dancing was one of the first dance forms created here in America. It is a perfect representation of the mosaic that is America because tap dancing is the fusion of dances brought to this country by slaves and immigrants. This fusion has been passed down from generation to generation and evolves every day. When it was created, it was used in celebrations; later it was used in musicals and variety shows to entertain; now it stands on its own in concert setting and conveys stories, shows emotions, and still entertains.
I have created four tap dances; each is different …
