The Banana Regions Of East Africa: The Regional Distribution & Cultural Significance Of A Traditional Food Crop, Henry Randiga Jul 1971

The Banana Regions Of East Africa: The Regional Distribution & Cultural Significance Of A Traditional Food Crop, Henry Randiga

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The study of bananas in East Africa by geographers has been neglected. Some study has been made by agriculturists and anthropologists on a small scale. The anthropologist have concentrated their work more on ethnic groups than on the spatial pattern of the crop as such. In none of the studies has distribution been correlated with the Bantu people in East Africa. For a long time the banana has been a staple food la the region. The present study points out that in spite of the many changes which have occurred the banana continues to serve as the staple food crop …

A study of the phytoplankton periodicity and its correlation with chemicophysical parameters, diel variation of the plankton, and the cyclomorphotic variation of Ceratium hirundinella was made in Shanty Hollow Lake, Warren County, Kentucky, from October, 1969, to August, 1970.

Phytoplankton samples were collected at zero and six feet with a Kemmerer sampler (31 October through 8 December) and with a ten -liter Birge-Juday plankton trap (23 December through 9 August). Water samples for the chemicophysical determinations were collected with a Kemmerer sampler. The phytoplankton samples were preserved with 5% formalin until they were enumerated. The experimental procedure described in this thesis consisted of a quanitative lipid analysis, a standard measurement of oxygen consumption, and determinations of fresh liver weight, and total body weight. The lipid analysis involved tissue extraction in a Soxlet apparatus (Rawat and Roy, 1958). The oxygen consumption measurements were made using a small animal respirometer, and fresh liver weights and total body weights were determined with an Ainsworth-Type-I0N analytical balance.

Influence Of Urea On The Fermentation Pattern & Nutritive Value Of Corn Silage, John Shirley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effects of chemical additives on the fermentation pattern and subsequent feeding value of corn silage was investigated over a two year period. Corn plants harvested in August 1967 (Experiment I) were ensiled with no additive, 3.50 per cent area, or urea-mineral mix supplying an equal amount of urea. Those harvested in August 1968 (Experiment II) were ensiled with no additive, 0.50 per cent urea, or 0.75 per cent urea. The nutritive value of these silages was evaluated chemically and by lactation trials.

Physique And The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy, Stuart Storey Aug 1968

Physique And The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy, Stuart Storey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Young people today are confronted with many problems in their everyday lives. It is difficult to tell how each individual overcomes these problems, but we do know that some problems are overcome more easily than others. This study was concerned with two problem levels, (a) those problems which were merely troublesome, and (b) those problems which were worrying. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physique, which was considered to be one of the major factors influencing attitude and behavior, and the type and number of problem and worry items which high school freshmen students experience. …
