Host-Parasite Associations Of Small Mammal Communities And Implications For The Spread Of Lyme Disease, Matthew J. Buchholz Apr 2016

Host-Parasite Associations Of Small Mammal Communities And Implications For The Spread Of Lyme Disease, Matthew J. Buchholz

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many zoonotic pathogens of concern to human and veterinary health are maintained in the environment within small mammal reservoirs and vectored to new hosts by ectoparasitic arthropods. While the ecological relationships among small mammals, ectoparasites, and disease-causing symbiotic microorganisms are important to these dynamics, little is known about them across much of North America. The sylvatic cycle of Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, is of particular interest because Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease of humans in the United States. However, cases of Lyme disease are primarily confined to the northeastern and Midwestern United States, …

Participation In Organizational Health And Wellness Programs, Sarah C. Adams

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Health and wellness programs are being utilized by organizations at growing rates. Research on health and wellness programs is typically confined to the program of a single organization and the employees participating in that specific program. Typically, this research examines the outcomes of health and wellness programs in organizations, such as return on investment in terms of medical costs, as well as improvements in the health of the employees. However, little information is known about those who choose to participate in health and wellness programs and the characteristics that may influence their participation.

This study examined the relationship between demographic …

Binding Of Oxaliplatin And Its Analogs With Dna Nucleotides At Variable Ph And Concentration Levels, Rippa Sehgal Apr 2016

Binding Of Oxaliplatin And Its Analogs With Dna Nucleotides At Variable Ph And Concentration Levels, Rippa Sehgal

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Oxaliplatin is one of the three FDA-approved platinum anticancer drugs and considered a third generation drug, discovered after the first generation drug cisplatin and second generation drug carboplatin. It is known to react with proteins and DNA nucleotides in the body. Reaction with DNA occurs primarily at guanosine residues and secondarily at adenine residues for oxaliplatin and other platinum drugs. We have previously studied oxaliplatin and an analog with additional steric hindrance in the amine ligand and found that the analog had different reactivity with methionine. Now, we have prepared oxaliplatin and its three analogs Pt(Me2dach)(ox), Pt(en)(ox) and Pt(Me4en)(ox) and …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Is Evident In Lewis Lung Carcinoma-Induced Muscle Wasting, Conner Benson, David E. Lee, Nicholas P. Greene, Jacob L. Brown, Megan E. Rosa, Tyrone A. Washington, Michael P. Wiggs Feb 2016

Mitochondrial Dysfunction Is Evident In Lewis Lung Carcinoma-Induced Muscle Wasting, Conner Benson, David E. Lee, Nicholas P. Greene, Jacob L. Brown, Megan E. Rosa, Tyrone A. Washington, Michael P. Wiggs

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cancer cachexia is a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with adverse prognosis and shortened survival. The defining feature of cachexia is extensive muscle atrophy leading to progressive functional impairments. The molecular mechanisms responsible for the rapid muscle wasting are not fully elucidated. Based on emerging evidence, we developed the hypothesis cachectic muscle wasting is caused by mitochondrial dysfunction increasing reactive oxygen species production leading to global oxidative stress. To test this hypothesis we utilized the well-established Lewis-Lung Carcinoma (LLC) model of cancer cachexia. The time-course study consisted of one, two, three and four week LLC tumor bearing mice and age-matched four week …

Effects Of Acute Vaporized Nicotine In Non-Tobacco Users At Rest And During Exercise, Juan Mejia, Jeremy Garcia, William H. Cooke, Caroline A. Rickards, Donovan L. Fogt Feb 2016

Effects Of Acute Vaporized Nicotine In Non-Tobacco Users At Rest And During Exercise, Juan Mejia, Jeremy Garcia, William H. Cooke, Caroline A. Rickards, Donovan L. Fogt

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Smokers, and even non-smokers, may utilize vaporized nicotine delivered by electronic cigarette (EC) due to the perception that EC are “healthier” than traditional tobacco cigarettes. The effects of vaporized nicotine delivered by EC on resting blood pressure (BP) and metabolic rate (RMR), or BP and aerobic power during exercise have not been studied. This investigation tested the effects of acute vaporized nicotine inhalation by EC on resting BP and RMR and cycle exercise BP, metabolic responses, and aerobic power in young, normotensive non-smokers. Using a double-blind design, 20 subjects (10 female; 23.1±2.5 years, 1.69±0.1 m, 70.6±14.9 kg; 22.1±11.0% body fat) …
