The Evaluation Of Repetitive Overhead Movements In Heating Ventilation And Air Conditioning Technicians, Joshua T. Kuehne, Sakiko Oyama
The Evaluation Of Repetitive Overhead Movements In Heating Ventilation And Air Conditioning Technicians, Joshua T. Kuehne, Sakiko Oyama
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Air conditioning technicians are the most non-fatally injured amongst construction workers. It has been identified that the shoulder is one of joints most commonly affected areas in industrial workers. While repetitive overhead movements have been evaluated in construction workers, it has not been described in air conditioning (AC) technicians. PURPOSE: To describe repetitive arm movement performed by AC technicians using inertial measurement unit (IMU) system, throughout a full work day. METHODS: An IMU is a small portable motion detection monitor that combines information from triaxial accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers to track translational movements. Six AC technicians participated on six …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Diabetic neuropathy is a debilitating complication of diabetes, affecting over 50% of diabetic patients. Overweight humans display manifestations of diabetic neuropathy before developing overt diabetes and mice fed a high fat diet exhibit signs of neuropathy including mechanical hindpaw hypersensitivity and neuronal inflammation, suggesting fat diet-induced inflammation may play a role in the development of neuropathy. Omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties and may hold therapeutic potential as a preventative treatment for prediabetic and diabetic patients at risk for neuropathy. PURPOSE: Investigate the impact of diet composition on signs of neuropathy. We hypothesized that a diet rich in n-3 …

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in the degradation of the extracellular matrix of the tissue and inflammation. Several tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMPs) are known to inhibit the activity of MMPs. PURPOSE: The current study investigated the responses of MMP-1, -2, -9, and -10 and TIMP-1, -2, -3, and -4 after a 3-week high-fat, low-carbohydrate (HFLC) diet following an acute aerobic exercise. METHODS: Physically active (unprofessional, competitive marathon runners) male subjects (N=8, age= 39.5 ± 9.9 years) volunteered for the study. Subjects maintained their habitual high carbohydrate (HC) diets before switching to the HFLC diet (70% total caloric …
The Influence Of A Single Bout Of High-Intensity Interval Exercise On Postprandial Lipemia And Glycemia, Stephen Decker
The Influence Of A Single Bout Of High-Intensity Interval Exercise On Postprandial Lipemia And Glycemia, Stephen Decker
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
A single bout of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise performed for a prolonged period of time (≥ 1 hour) has been reported to reduce the magnitude of postprandial lipemia and glycemia in both healthy and at-risk populations. High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) bouts are generally performed in brief intervals (≤ 1 minute) followed with brief periods of rest (1 - 3 minutes) for up to 30 minutes in duration. The influence that a single bout of HIIE would have on postprandial lipemia and glycemia is not clear. PURPOSE: Examine the effects of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on postprandial (PP) triglyceride (TG), glucose, and …

Fish-Oils Increase Bambi Expression To Protect Against Fibrotic Activity In Lps Stimulated Hepatic Tissue, Megan L. Schaller, Matthew P. Harris, Dakota R. Kamm, Kenneth A. Witt, Karin E. Sandoval, Joshua S. Wooten
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), defined as excess hepatic lipid and chronic inflammation, provides an environment prone for the development of hepatic fibrosis. Recent evidence suggests that the antifibrotic protein BAMBI (BMP-Activin membrane bound inhibitor) is downregulated in the presence of inflammation, and may be central to the development of fibrosis. Diets rich in omega-3 (w-3) fatty acids are known to provide anti-inflammatory effects; however, the effects of w-3 fatty acids on hepatic fibrosis are not well-established. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of fish-oils on the hepatic fibrosis signaling cascade, following 32-weeks of high-fat feeding in a LPS-induced model of NASH. METHODS: …

The Effect Of A Western Diet On Hepatic Autophagy In Age Accelerated Samp8 Mice, Matthew P. Harris, Megan L. Schaller, David Umbaugh, Karin Sandoval, Kenneth A. Witt, Joshua S. Wooten
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is characterized as a dysregulation of hepatic lipid metabolism and a chronic inflammatory state. It is hypothesized the link between lipid dysregulation and inflammation may be due in part to defective hepatic autophagy and reduced mitochondrial capacity to oxidize fatty acids. It remains to be determined; however, the effects of a Western diet on hepatic autophagy and mitochondrial function during aging. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a high-fat high fructose diet (HFF) on markers of hepatic autophagy and mitochondrial function in an age accelerated mouse model. METHODS: Twenty …

The Acute Effects Of Static Stretching Compared To Dynamic Stretching With And Without An Active Warm Up On Anaerobic Performance, Bradley J. Kendall
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(1): 53-61, 2017. The Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT) has been used in many studies to determine anaerobic performance. However, there has been poor reporting of warm-up protocols and limited consistency between warm-up methods that have been used. With the WAnT being such a commonly-used test, consistency in warm-up methods is essential in order to compare results across studies. Therefore, this study was designed to compare how static stretching, dynamic stretching, and an active warm-up affect WAnT performance. Ten recreationally active participants (5 males, 5 females) with a mean (SD) age of 23.3 (0.7) volunteered for …

A Spanner In The Works: Human–Elephant Conflict Complicates The Food–Water–Energy Nexus In Drylands Of Africa, Bruce Schulte, Mwangi Githiru, Urbanus Mutwiwa, Simon Kasaine
Biology Faculty Publications
The two major conservation issues for drylands of Africa are habitat loss or degradation and habitat fragmentation, largely fromagriculture, charcoal production, and infrastructural development. A key question for management is how these landscapes can retain their critical ecological functions and services, while simultaneously supporting resilient livelihoods. It is a clear nexus question involving food (agriculture), water, and energy (fuelwood), which is complicated by human–wildlife conflicts. While these could appear disparate issues, they are closely connected in dryland forest landscapes of Africa where elephants occur close to areas of human habitation. For instance, crop failure, whether due to weather or wildlife …

Inter-Correlations Between Laboratory Inter-Correlations Between Laboratory And Field-Based Tests Of Muscle Contractile Power, Mitchell J. Cameron, Robert Robergs
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 9(5): 635-645, 2016. Muscle contractile properties have previously been distinguished by fiber typing muscle samples obtained from needle biopsy; however due to conflicting evidence regarding sampling bias and the related need for multiple biopsies, it is not certain if these results are a reliable reflection of whole muscle fiber type expression. Inter-correlations between laboratory and field-based measures of muscle contractile power were used to determine which assessments best discriminate between participants of varying sprint performance, and indirectly reveal potential for power vs. endurance exercise performance. Healthy active male (n=32) and female (n=17) participants were recruited …

The Effect Of A Moderately-Low And High Carbohydrate Intake On Crossfit Performance, Kurt A. Escobar, Jacobo Morales, Trisha A. Vandusseldorp
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 9(4): 460-470, 2016. CrossFit is a metabolically demanding strength and conditioning method which performance may benefit from a carbohydrate (CHO)-rich diet. This study investigated the effect of three consecutive days of high CHO intake on CrossFit performance and corresponding metabolically -related variables in strength trained individuals. Eighteen subjects with a CHO intake of <6 g/kg/day were randomly assigned into a CHO (n = 9) or control (C) group (n =9) and underwent a 9-day training protocol. During days 1, 5, and 9, performance was measured as repetitions completed during a 12 minute CrossFit workout. Oxygen consumption (VO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), and blood lactate (BL) were also measured. Days 6-8, the CHO group increased CHO intake from <6 g/kg/day to 6-8 g/kg/day; the C group maintained their current intake of <6 g/kg/day. On days 6 and 7 both groups performed CrossFit workouts followed by a day of rest prior to day 9. There was a significant increase in repetitions completed in both groups in day 9 (vs. means score of day 1 + 5) (p = 0.002), but no differences between C and CHO groups (p = 0.111). However, the CHO group displayed a 15.2 repetition increase (+10.9%) in day 9, compared to 5.7 (+4.2%) by the C group. VO2, RER, and BL were not influenced by the experimental intervention. Our results suggest that the CrossFit-embraced practice of moderately-low CHO diets may be adequate in CHO during short periods of training, however, given the noted trend, extended training periods may be effected.
