The Effect Of Sport-Specific Resistance Training On Athletic Performance Outcomes Of College Rodeo Athletes, Kenneth L. Bowen Jr.

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Resistance training yields significant improvements to athletic performance outcomes among multiple sports. A sport-specific approach for resistance produces greater adaptation and transfer to various sports. However, few studies have examined the potential benefit of sport-specific resistance training for the sport of rodeo. PURPOSE: The aim of the current investigation was to assess the effect of sport-specific resistance training on athletic performance outcomes of rodeo athletes. METHODS: Seventeen college rodeo athletes (12 females; 5 males) participated in an 8-week, 3-days per week, sport-specific resistance training program. Muscle cross sectional area (CSA), mid-thigh pull maximal isometric voluntary contraction (MVC), height (HT), …

Microvascular Blood Flow Changes In Rgv Hispanics In Response To A Mixed Meal Challenge, Smaran Marupudi, Yu Lun Tai, Gabriel Figueroa, Alexandro Rodriguez, Jaime Rodriguez, Saraswathy Nair, Jimmy Gonzales, Ryan D. Russell

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Type 2 diabetes rates in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) are 3x higher than the national average, with etiologies being multifactorial. Impaired postprandial skeletal muscle microvascular blood flow (MBF) is one of the earliest T2D pathophysiologies noted in Caucasians. However, MBF responses are unknown in the Hispanic population of the RGV. PURPOSE: Our goal in this study was to determine whether normoglycemic Hispanic individuals in the RGV exhibit impaired skeletal muscle MBF responses compared with healthy Caucasian individuals from a previous study. METHODS: 15 Hispanic individuals from the RGV with no family history of T2D (FH-), and 13 …

Changes In Hemoglobin Concentration After Two Weeks Of Apnea Training, Lukas G. Karrett, Edward K. Merritt

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Hemoglobin concentration has been shown to increase immediately after maximal-duration apneas in both divers and untrained individuals. Relatively few studies have examined how apnea training programs influence hemoglobin concentration in untrained individuals. PURPOSE: To examine how a two-week maximal duration breath-hold training program, consisting of five maximal duration voluntary apneas per day, would change hemoglobin concentration in healthy adults. This study looked at short-term changes in hemoglobin after a series of breath-holds when untrained and trained in addition to long-term changes in resting hemoglobin before and after training. METHODS: Fifteen healthy adults (22.4 ± 4.8 years) came to the lab …

Lifestyle Factors Affecting Android Fat In Hispanic Residents Of The Rgv, Alexandro Rodriguez, Ryan D. Russell, Smaran Marupudi, Gabriel Figueroa, Jaime Rodriguez, Saraswathy Nair, Jimmy Gonzalez, Yu Lun Tai

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

ABSTRACT

Approximately 79% of the Hispanic population in the Rio Grande Valley (HPRGV) are overweight or obese. As such, this population also have ~3x the type 2 diabetes (T2D) rates than the US average. Distribution of adipose tissue, affected largely by genetics and lifestyle (diet and physical activity, has been identified as a key-marker for T2D risk among apparently healthy individuals. However, the relationship of lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity on android fat in healthy young Hispanics of the RGV has not been completely explored. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is …

Metabolic Flexibility In Healthy Hispanics In The Rio Grande Valley With And Without A Family History Of Type 2 Diabetes, Jaime Rodriguez, Ryan D. Russell, Gabriel A. Figueroa, Alexandro Rodriguez, Smaran Marupudi, Yu Lun Tai, Sara Swathy, Jimmy Gonzales

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

ABSTRACT Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) has several comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, elevated lipid profile, microvascular complications, and impaired metabolic flexibility (MF: the ability to switch substrate use upon stimulation). Further, healthy Caucasians with a family history of T2D (FH+) have impaired MF similar to T2D, suggesting impaired MF could be an early-detection tool to identify at-risk populations. Hispanics of the Rio Grande Valley have ~3x the T2D rates as the US average, and have ~79% of the people in this region are either overweight or obese. However, patterns of MF in this population have not been addressed. Purpose: The …

Exercise Mobilizes Early And Late Differentiated Cd8 T Cells Expressing A Marker Of Exhaustion, Rebekah Hunt, Mahmoud Elzayat, Emily C. Lavoy Feb 2022

Exercise Mobilizes Early And Late Differentiated Cd8 T Cells Expressing A Marker Of Exhaustion, Rebekah Hunt, Mahmoud Elzayat, Emily C. Lavoy

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

T cell differentiation occurs following activation of key functions, such as proliferation and cytokine production. Naïve (NA) and central memory (CM) T cells are early differentiated, whereas effector memory (EM) and RA+ effector memory cells (EMRA) are later differentiated. CD57 expression, a putative marker of exhaustion, has also been used to identify later differentiated cells, although recent data indicate CD57 can also be expressed by NA and CM. Exercise mobilizes EM and EMRA to a greater extent than NA and CM. Separately, exercise has been shown to preferentially mobilize CD57+ cells. Whether these exercise responsive CD57+ cells arise from highly …

Autophagy, But Not Proteolysis, May Aid In Muscle Protein Synthesis, Megan H. Lewis, Patrick J. Ryan, Sean T. Stanelle, Colleen L. O'Reilly, Jessica M. Cardin, James D. Fluckey Feb 2022

Autophagy, But Not Proteolysis, May Aid In Muscle Protein Synthesis, Megan H. Lewis, Patrick J. Ryan, Sean T. Stanelle, Colleen L. O'Reilly, Jessica M. Cardin, James D. Fluckey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

For muscle growth to occur, protein synthesis must be greater than protein degradation. However, up to this point, anabolic pathways have garnered the brunt of investigations examining anabolic capacity with little investigation into the connectedness of catabolic signaling on these anabolic targets. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to elucidate the contributions of proteasomal-dependent and autophagic-dependent catabolic pathways on anabolism via analysis of fractional synthetic rates (FSR) in L6 myotubes. METHODS: Differentiated, cultured L6 myoblasts were treated with media containing 4% deuterium oxide (stable isotope label) and a corresponding pharmacological treatment (NSC 185058 [autophagic inhibitor; 100 μM], …

Insulin-Induced Increase In Anabolic Capacity Is Blunted By Autophagic Inhibition In L6 Myotubes, Sean T. Stanelle, Patrick J. Ryan, Megan H. Lewis, Selina Uranga, Colleen L. O'Reilly, Jessica M. Cardin, James D. Fluckey Feb 2022

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Insulin is an anabolic hormone that acts on skeletal muscle cells to stimulate protein synthesis, an effect that is enhanced by the availability of amino acids. While autophagy within the cell provides an intracellular source of amino acids to support anabolism, little is known about how this pathway impacts the insulin-induced increase in anabolic capacity within skeletal muscle cells. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of autophagic inhibition in cultured L6 myotubes in conjunction with insulin stimulation in vitro. METHODS: Differentiated, cultured L6 myotubes were treated for 24 hours with or without insulin (100 nM) …

Association Of Training Characteristics With Critical Power In Competitive Recreational Cyclists And Triathletes, Andreas Kreutzer, Julie A. Swets, Cathy R. Cox, Meena Shah Feb 2022

Association Of Training Characteristics With Critical Power In Competitive Recreational Cyclists And Triathletes, Andreas Kreutzer, Julie A. Swets, Cathy R. Cox, Meena Shah

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Endurance athletes often employ a training zone approach to classify their training intensity, where Zones 1, 2, and 3 (Z1-Z3) correspond to low, moderate, and high intensities. Research has shown that many elite athletes across a multitude of endurance sports employ polarized training distributions (TIDs), i.e., they spend a large percentage of their training in Z1 with much of the remainder in Z3 and little training in Z2. This appears to be beneficial for performance in these populations. The typical TIDs among recreationally competitive endurance athletes and their impact on performance are less well understood. PURPOSE: The purpose of …

Autophagy Is Required For The Anabolic Response To Muscle Contraction, Patrick J. Ryan, Sean T. Stanelle, Megan H. Lewis, Selina Uranga, Colleen L. O'Reilly, J William Deaver, Jessica M. Cardin, James D. Fluckey

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Exercise is a key stimulus in regulating the behavior and metabolism of skeletal muscle, with exercise inducing muscular growth through activation of the anabolic mechanistic target of rapamycin kinase (mTOR). Separately, there is mounting evidence that exercise increases autophagy (one of the main routes by which intracellular proteins are degraded) and that the autophagic process may indeed be required for adaptations to exercise training. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of autophagy inhibition on mTOR signaling and cellular anabolism after muscular contraction. METHODS: Cultured L6 myotubes were to exposed to electrical pulse stimulation using a stimulator set to deliver bipolar pulses …

Resistance Training May Mitigate Age-Related Decline In Physical Function, Holly H. Kendall, David Torres, Quinten W. Pigg, Lindsay E. Kipp Ph.D, Joni A. Mettler Ph.D

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Aging is often accompanied with the onset of sarcopenia, defined by low muscle mass, strength, and physical function. Regular resistance exercise may mitigate this loss; however, data are lacking that compare younger and older adults who do and do not perform resistance training for general health on skeletal muscle mass and physical function. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify differences in muscle mass and physical function between younger and older adults who did and did not perform resistance training for general health. METHODS: Healthy younger (23.8 ± 0.4 yrs) and older (68.5 ± 1.2 yrs) men and …

Athlete Perceptions Of Flavored, Menthol-Enhanced Energy Gels Ingested Prior To Running In The Heat, Roxanne M. Vogel, Christopher J. Stevens, Christian Swann, Megan L. Ross

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Thermal perception during exercise is known to influence endurance performance and the onset of fatigue. L-menthol, an organic compound derived from peppermint, evokes a cooling sensation through its action on TRPM8 channels which also respond to cold stimuli. Recent work identified that the internal application of menthol-enhanced fluids can be ergogenic during exercise in the heat. Hence, the addition of menthol to energy gels may be practical and beneficial for athletes. PURPOSE: To determine athlete acceptability and preferences for flavored energy gels with different menthol concentrations. METHODS: With a randomized, crossover, and double-blind placebo-controlled design, 27 endurance athletes …

Postprandial Hemodynamics In Hispanics With And Without A Family History Of Type 2 Diabetes, Gabriel Figueroa, Yu L. Tai, Jaime Rodriguez, Alexandro Rodriguez, Smaran Marupadi, Javier Ybarra, Ryan D. Russell

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Hispanics of the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) have the highest rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the country, conditions often associated with cardiovascular disease and increased mortality. We have previously shown that healthy people with a family history of T2D (FH+) display divergent central and peripheral hemodynamic responses postprandially vs those with no family history (FH-). Why these differences exist is unknown. PURPOSE: To identify physiological factors affecting postprandial hemodynamic responses differently between FH+ and FH- groups. METHODS: Thirty-five healthy Hispanic individuals volunteered in this study, including 17 participants with a family history of T2D …

At The Same Relative Intensity, Post-Exercise Increase Of Circulating Cytotoxic T Cells Is Not Affected By Resistance Exercise Volume, Treadmill Speed Or Grade, Seth Rinehart

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cancer and viral-infected cells can be killed by cytotoxic (CD3+CD8+) T cells. The circulation of these cells in the body is increased in response to a single session of walking on a treadmill (TM) or resistance exercise (RE). However, it is unknown if certain variables such as TM grade, TM speed, or RE volume may have a significant impact on the exercise-induced increase of circulating cytotoxic T cells. The PURPOSEof this study is to compare, at the same relative intensity, the influence of TM grade, TM speed, and RE volume on the exercise-induced increase in cytotoxic T cells in …

Difference In Rate Of Perceived Exertion Between Cluster- And Traditional-Set Lower Body Resistance Training, Kayleigh M. Abbott, Tyler Frank, Kenneth Bowen, Andrew A. Wolfe, Micheal Luera, Matt Laurent

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Training variation is an integral part of strength and conditioning programming as it stimulates recovery, various adaptations, enhances athletic performance outcomes, while avoiding overtraining. The structure of set and repetition prescription is often varied to achieve desired adaptive outcomes. Cluster-set (CL), or rest-pause set, training is a method utilized to change the traditional-set (TS) and repetition structure by interrupting the repetitions with a 10-30s rest interval. Results from previous reports describe CL training as optimal for increasing training volume, lift quality, and achieves similar hormonal responses when compared to TS training. However, no studies have examined differences in perceived exertion …

Lower Extremity Muscle Activity When Walking On A Non-Motorized Treadmill, Carl P. Shaulis, Sam I. Anderson, Riley A. Barlage, Scott P. Mclean

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Effective interventions for increasing walking speed are important for improving health and quality of life in aging populations. Non-motorized treadmills (NMT) may enhance the ability to develop or improve motor control in gait by requiring the participant to produce and maintain speed as compared to use of a motorized treadmill (MT) which requires one to simply match speed. PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to compare muscle activation patterns of lower extremity muscles between MT, NMT and overground (OG) walking. METHODS: Twenty healthy adults (24.4±7.2 yrs, 1.75±0.09 m, 75.4±13.1 kg) completed one trial of walking at each …

Intermuscular Coherence Of Rotator Cuff And Deltoid Muscles Varies With Force Output, Xin Yu, Huiying Zhu, Lindsey Hammond, Lisa Griffin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Maintaining glenohumeral joint stability requires coordination of the rotator cuff and deltoid muscles. Load changing may alter the neuromuscular control patterns between these two muscle groups. PURPOSE: To identify intermuscular EMG coherence patterns between the rotator cuff and deltoid muscles at different force levels. METHODS: Surface EMG electrodes were used to record activity from the anterior deltoid (AD), middle deltoid (MD), and infraspinatus (IS) muscles of the dominant shoulder in 7 healthy individuals (mean age ± SD = 19±1, 6 females, 1 male). An intramuscular fine-wire EMG electrode was inserted into supraspinatus (SS). Participants performed 30s contractions of …

Sympathetically-Mediated Cutaneous Vasoconstriction Is Similar Between Non-Hispanic Black And White Individuals, Emily R. Merlau, Zachary T. Martin, John D. Akins, Jeremiah C. Campbell, Brandi Y. Stephens, Paul J. Fadel, R. Matthew Brothers Feb 2022

Sympathetically-Mediated Cutaneous Vasoconstriction Is Similar Between Non-Hispanic Black And White Individuals, Emily R. Merlau, Zachary T. Martin, John D. Akins, Jeremiah C. Campbell, Brandi Y. Stephens, Paul J. Fadel, R. Matthew Brothers

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevalence is highest in non-Hispanic Black (BL) individuals compared to any other race. The mechanisms responsible remain incompletely understood and can be impacted by several environmental, psychosocial, and socioeconomic factors. A major contributing factor to elevated CVD risk/prevalence in the BL population is altered vascular function, which could be attributed to an exaggerated vasoconstrictor response to efferent sympathetic activity (i.e., sympathetic vascular transduction). Previous data from our group demonstrates heightened sympathetic vascular transduction in the peripheral vasculature of BL males. However, whether sympathetically-mediated vasoconstriction is exaggerated in the cutaneous circulation of BL individuals remains unknown. PURPOSE: This …

Relationship Between Body Composition, Diet, And Food Addiction In Young Adult Females, Abigail Fitzgibbons, Claire Timon, Britney Burnam, Jose M. Moris, Yunsuk Koh

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Addictive behavior in relation to food is often a consistent variable with obesity and aberrant eating. However, body composition alone is not a strong indicator of food addiction, rather is associated with other factors such as quality of diet, making the compulsive behavior difficult to diagnose. Eating disorders are widespread amongst young adult females and warrant further investigation. PURPOSE: To identify various factors that may attribute to food addiction symptoms in young adult females. METHODS: The study consisted of twelve physically healthy females (age = 20.8 ± 1.6 yr and BMI = 21.9 ± 1.6 kg/m2). …

Body composition techniques such as skinfold measurements, air displacement plethysmography, and underwater weighing are commonly performed in athletic populations, particularly in youth athletes who may not have access to other laboratory methods. However, little is known whether such body composition estimates can be directly compared across techniques. PURPOSE: To determine the agreement between common two-component (2C) body composition techniques. METHODS: 90 youth athletes (Males: 39; Females: 51; Age: 18.2 ± 2.4 years; Height: 172.0 ± 9.9 cm; Body Mass: 69.0 ± 12.5 kg; Underwater Weighing [UWW] Body Fat Percentage [%BF]: 20.2 ± 7.0%) participated in this study. 2C …

Beneficial Effects Of Supra High-Intensity Interval Training In Police Officers, Cameron Dulsky Feb 2022

Beneficial Effects Of Supra High-Intensity Interval Training In Police Officers, Cameron Dulsky

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The job environment of a police officer involves unusually high physical and mental stressors paired with hours of prolonged sedentary behavior. A variety of alarming health problems such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and mental health issues are highly prevalent among police officers and the availability of officers to engage in traditional regularly-scheduled exercises is generally restricted by irregular shift hours. Therefore, supra high-intensity interval training (supra HIIT) may be a viable training option as it elicits physical and mental health benefits and can be completed in less than five minutes. PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a …

The Influence Of Intermittent Hypoxia On Erythropoietin Levels In Older Adults, Frank Wojan, Sten Stray-Gundersen, Sahar D. Massoudian, Sophie Lalande

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Few minutes of hypoxia exposure stabilizes hypoxia-inducible factors, resulting in erythropoietin (EPO) gene transcription and production. A brief intermittent hypoxia exposure increased EPO levels in young healthy adults, suggesting that a single session of intermittent hypoxia has the potential to increase oxygen-carrying capacity. PURPOSE: To determine the effect of a single session of intermittent hypoxia on serum EPO levels and hemoglobin mass among older adults. We hypothesized that a single session of intermittent hypoxia would raise serum EPO levels and lead to an increase in hemoglobin mass in older adults. METHODS: Seventeen participants (8 women, age: 54 ± …

An Evaluation Of Static And Dynamic Yoga Training Programs, Garett Petty, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Jose M. Moris, Claire Timon, Yunsuk Koh

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

While traditional yoga programs focus on static stretching and core stability, Essentrics yoga relies more heavily on full-body stretch and strengthening regiments coupled with dynamic movements such as ceiling reaches, side-to-side bends, lunges, and side leg lifts. Through the incorporation of more dynamic movements, Essentrics yoga is thought to elicit greater improvements in overall body composition, flexibility, and balance. PURPOSE: To examine the benefits of a 6-weeks long Essentrics (dynamic) program compared to standard (static) Yoga on body composition, flexibility, and balance. METHODS: Thirty-one participants (24 females and 7 males, age = 20.4 ± 0.2yrs, and BMI = 22.58 ± …

Power Production Asymmetry During Submaximal Cycling: Preliminary Results, Valerie E. Neira, John W. Farrell Iii Feb 2022

Power Production Asymmetry During Submaximal Cycling: Preliminary Results, Valerie E. Neira, John W. Farrell Iii

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Significant differences between the lower limbs (i.e., asymmetry, > 10% difference between contralateral limbs) in power production during cycling has been suggested to contribute to the early development of fatigue and to limit performance. Exercise intensity represents one factor that may contribute to the development of asymmetry in power production during cycling, with previous investigations reporting conflicting results with a variety of methods utilized during assessments. PURPOSE: To determine the day-to-day reliability in power production asymmetry assessment and to examine the effect of exercise intensity on power production asymmetry during submaximal cycling. METHODS: Participants completed an incremental cycling test …

Shoulder Arthroscopy After A Proximal Humeral Fracture Malunion: Athlete Care And Clinical Medicine In Middle-Aged Athletes, Anna Mcduffie, Nikolaos Gravvanis, Georgios Tsikouris, Theofanis Papadakis, Lisa A. Vicencio, Andreas Stamatis Feb 2022

Shoulder Arthroscopy After A Proximal Humeral Fracture Malunion: Athlete Care And Clinical Medicine In Middle-Aged Athletes, Anna Mcduffie, Nikolaos Gravvanis, Georgios Tsikouris, Theofanis Papadakis, Lisa A. Vicencio, Andreas Stamatis

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Malunion of the proximal humerus is operationally defined as healing of the fractured bone in a non-anatomical position, resulting in a painful and disabling deformity (e.g., a bone being shorter than normal, twisted or rotated in a bad position, or bent), which affects the range of motion (ROM) and functional movement. A correction and functional restoration are often needed in athletes, since their profession requires superior physical functioning. Shoulder arthroscopy has evolved dramatically over the past 15 years and has been used in cases of malunion of the humerus in athletes. However, there is a scarcity of evidence concerning middle-aged …

Sex-Specific Difference Of Functional Movement Screening Scores Among Rodeo Athletes, Jessie Ramirez, Andrew A. Wolfe, Andrea Green, Meghan Younger, Gillian Braden, Justin Stanley Feb 2022

Sex-Specific Difference Of Functional Movement Screening Scores Among Rodeo Athletes, Jessie Ramirez, Andrew A. Wolfe, Andrea Green, Meghan Younger, Gillian Braden, Justin Stanley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Faulty movement patterns, especially in elite athletes, can lead to neuromuscular imbalances. Rodeo is an example of an injury prone sport that requires optimal muscular synergy, endurance, strength, and limb flexibility to succeed in rodeo performance. The Functional Movement Screening (FMS) test has shown validity in identifying various neuromuscular imbalances, and subsequently, scientific findings support the FMS threshold score (less ≤ 14) as valid for injury risk screening in collision and team sports, firefighters, and the tactical professions. If an athlete has a composite score of 14 or less in conjunction with a previous injury, they are 15 times more …

Effect Of Acute Heat Exposure On The Pressor Response To A Voluntary Hypoxic Apnea: A Cross-Tolerance Study, Holden W. Hemingway, Rauchelle E. Richey, Amy M. Moore, Benjamin M. Saul, Austin M. Shokraeifard, Heidi L. Cope, Albert H. Olivencia-Yurvati, Rebecca L. Cunningham, Michael L. Smith, Steven A. Romero

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The pressor response induced by a voluntary hypoxic apnea is exaggerated in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea and is strongly correlated to sympathetic overactivity. Acute heat exposure alters neural control of blood pressure, but its effect on the pressor response to a voluntary hypoxic apnea has never been explored. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis that acute heat exposure attenuates the pressor response to a voluntary hypoxic apnea, and thereby manifest as a form of physiological cross-tolerance. METHODS: Eight adults (3 females, 26 ± 2 yrs) were exposed to passive heat stress (water perfused suit) sufficient to increase body core temperature …

Hypoxic Preconditioning Attenuates Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury In Older Adults, Sten Stray-Gundersen, Sahar D. Massoudian, Frank Wojan, Hirofumi Tanaka, Sophie Lalande Feb 2022

Hypoxic Preconditioning Attenuates Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury In Older Adults, Sten Stray-Gundersen, Sahar D. Massoudian, Frank Wojan, Hirofumi Tanaka, Sophie Lalande

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Sudden restoration of blood flow to an ischemic vessel paradoxically damages endothelial cells. In young healthy adults, ischemic preconditioning, caused by repeated periods of brief ischemia induced by local cuff inflation prior to reperfusion, attenuates endothelial dysfunction following an ischemia-reperfusion injury. However, ischemic preconditioning does not consistently protect against ischemia-reperfusion injury in older adults. Intermittent systemic hypoxemia, induced via brief bouts of breathing low levels of oxygen, attenuates endothelial dysfunction following an ischemia-reperfusion injury in young adults. PURPOSE: To determine whether intermittent hypoxia protects against ischemia-reperfusion injury in older adults. METHODS: Twelve older adults (5 women, age: 57 …
