Effects Of Biodensity Training On Lipid Profile In Young Women: A Pilot Study, Tristan R. Issa, Rosalinda Escobar-Prado, Auguste Torres, Maurice Cruz, Carolina Garcia, Braulio Cazarez, Nathaniel Bodell, Zhaojing Chen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
bioDensity training is a novel type of resistance exercise, which includes four basic isometric exercises in a subsequent fashion: chest press, leg press, core pull, and vertical lift. Although it’s primarily targeted on bone strength, a previous study showed that it improved HbA1C, fasting glucose, HDL, LDL and total cholesterol in elderly patients with Type 2 diabetes (Zheng et al. 2019). To date, the research on bioDensity training is limited, and its effects on a healthy population are unknown. PURPOSE: We are looking to examine the effects of 12-week bioDensity training on lipid profiles in young women. METHODS: …

Examining Stroke Volume Changes During Exercise In Healthy Young Adults, Thomas Clark, Anthony Ciccone, Zane Evans, Keslee Stephenson, Chandler Rose, Carlos Goff, Shane Draper, Nicolas Clark
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Cardiac output is determined by the combination of heart rate and stroke volume. While heart rate is primarily influenced by cardiac autonomic input, stroke volume's behavior is more intricate due to the interplay between myocardial response to stretch (Frank-Starling law) and adrenergic changes in contractility. No consensus exist on its behavior during exercise despite extensive data. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess how normalized stroke volume scores (SV) change in young, healthy adult males during a graded exercise test to exhaustion (GXT). METHODS: Participants (n=20; age=22.9±2.4; BMI=23.7±2.4) were instructed to abstain from engaging in vigorous …
Validation Of The Work Capacity Test For Wildland Firefighters, Cassandra Mcfarland, Zachary Hofheins, Janna Thompson, Lexi Sorensen, Andrew Creer, Shane Draper
Validation Of The Work Capacity Test For Wildland Firefighters, Cassandra Mcfarland, Zachary Hofheins, Janna Thompson, Lexi Sorensen, Andrew Creer, Shane Draper
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Much of the reported Wildland Firefighter (WLFF) data use prediction equations which tend to underestimate oxygen consumption (VO2) during load carriage. As a result, the reported metabolic and oxygen consumption data values may actually be higher creating a larger gap between the US Forest Service arduous pack test (APT) and true occupational demand. The reported data regarding the energy cost upon which the APT has been based (22.5 mL/kg/min of oxygen) has overwhelmingly been tested in current WLFF with few participants. However, no studies have recently examined the current energy expenditure of men and women who want to qualify to …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes all rank among the leading causes of death in the United States, particularly among the elderly. While many behavioral and pharmacological strategies have been employed to reduce the incidence of these conditions, increasing evidence indicates that entering a mild to moderate state of ketosis through fasting or a very low carbohydrate diet can improve the prognosis for these conditions. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the extent to which a high carbohydrate low fat (HC/LF) pre-fast meal altered MCP-1, TNF-alpha and IL-6 compared to a low carbohydrate high-fat pre-fast …

Effects Of High Heeled Gait On Knee Joint Mechanics, James Baldonado, Errin Abosolo, Harry Montoya, Zander Sadorra, Christie R. O'Hara
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Numerous women wear high heeled shoes, whether it be a professional attire, part of an outfit for a ballroom gala, or just casual day to day wear. Often, the high heel of choice in these situations is the stiletto. These shoes adversely affect natural gait and have the potential to alter joint mechanics in the knee during gait. PURPOSE: This study is designed to analyze the impacts of wearing high heels, and if it puts the user at a higher risk of a degenerative condition with repeated use. We hypothesized that all of our dependent variables would see a …

Comparing Muscle Oxygenation And Maximal Blood Lactate Concentration In Middle-Distance Athletes: A Speed Reserve Ratio Analysis, Braeden Kraft, Ayla Kraft, Kurt A. Escobar, Evan E. Schick, Joshua A. Cotter
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Middle-distance running is a unique discipline that utilizes both aerobic and anaerobic abilities, resulting in a physiologically diverse athlete population. This diversity in athlete makeup underscores the necessity for precise physiological profiling methods to improve individualized training and race strategy approaches. While the Speed Reserve Ratio (SRR) has garnered attention as an accurate and effective tool in athlete profiling, skeletal muscle oxygenation (SmO2) and blood lactate also have shown potential in this field. However, the effectiveness of these biomarkers in middle-distance populations, especially in conjunction with SRR, is less understood. PURPOSE: This research aims to understand the relationships between …

Effects Of Nitrate Supplementation On In Vivo Muscle Torque Recovery From Bacl2-Induced Injury, Dylan M. Kasper, Lloyd Marshall, Leonardo Nogueira
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
During repair from muscle injury, muscle satellite cells depend on nitric oxide production by immune cells to proliferate and differentiate. Nitrate supplementation has been shown to improve muscle endurance and oxygen consumption, but little is known about the ability of nitrate supplementation to interfere with muscle regeneration following injury. PURPOSE: To investigate whether nitrate supplementation affects muscle recovery of force after muscle injury produced by intramuscular injection of barium chloride. METHODS: Transgenic male mice (12 weeks old) that express Td-Tomato fluorescent protein in Pax7+ cells (i.e., satellite cells; Pax7CreER-Ai9 mice) were treated with tamoxifen (2 mg in corn …
Diaphragm Force And Mitochondrial Function Ex Vivo Following Gsnor Inhibition In Vivo Preceding Mechanical Ventilation, Simon P. Pierce, Daniel T. Cannon, Leonardo Nogueira
Diaphragm Force And Mitochondrial Function Ex Vivo Following Gsnor Inhibition In Vivo Preceding Mechanical Ventilation, Simon P. Pierce, Daniel T. Cannon, Leonardo Nogueira
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
During mechanical ventilation (MV), force developed by the diaphragm is decreased over time much faster than locomotor muscles. This is known as ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction (VIDD), and VIDD may be accelerated by intramyofiber oxidative stress. An important free radical used for the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is nitric oxide (NO) which can diffuse to diaphragm myofibers during treatment. However, little is known whether NO or NO by-products such as S-nitrosothiols (RSNO), can accelerate or prevent VIDD. PURPOSE: To investigate whether inhibiting S-nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNORi) during MV could affect ex vivo diaphragm force and mitochondrial respiration. METHODS …

Intra And Inter-Rater Reliability Of The Exercise Thresholds App In Identifying Ventilatory Thresholds Using Undergraduate Raters, Anna Grexton, Dante Argento, Holland Gaston, Cory Greever
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Identifying the gas exchange threshold (GET) and the respiratory compensation point (RCP) are the least invasive methods for determining aerobic training zones from maximal graded exercise tests. This process requires a thorough examination of several respiratory gas exchange parameters from breath-by-breath or time binned averages. Given the nature of processing data in this fashion, standardized tools could be useful in improving exercise physiology student’s accuracy in identifying these thresholds. The Exercise Thresholds App is a computer application developed to simultaneously visualize eight different respiratory gas exchange parameters (VE, VO2, VCO2, VE/VCO2, VE/VO2, PETO2, PETCO2, RER) from maximal exercise tests …
Rare Case Of Traction Sural Neuropathy Due To Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture, Heather Lystad, Kenneth Vitale
Rare Case Of Traction Sural Neuropathy Due To Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture, Heather Lystad, Kenneth Vitale
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Sural nerve injury (SNI) is a reported complication of acute Achilles tendon rupture (ATR), primarily iatrogenic in operatively managed cases. The sural nerve typically runs along the lateral border of the Achilles tendon. Its branches provide sensory information from the lateral foot and ankle. Given its proximity to the Achilles tendon, sural nerve-related complications in operatively managed cases are a known adverse outcome. However, the incidence of SNI in conservatively managed cases is thought to be much less common. Most patients recover to normal sensation by one year of injury to the sural nerve. CASE DESCRIPTION: A previously healthy 30 …

Abdominal Adiposity Indexed By The Sagittal Abdominal Diameter And Risk Of Mortality In 14,119 U.S. Adults, Joshua A. Brockbank, Larry A. Tucker
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The body mass index (BMI) is frequently used as a general measure of overweight and obesity. It is a good predictor of disease and premature death. However, research shows that indices of abdominal adiposity tend to be better predictors of disease risk and mortality than BMI. To date, the sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), an index of abdominal adiposity, has never been evaluated as a predictor of mortality. PURPOSE: The present study was conducted to determine the extent that adults with different levels of SAD vary in their risk of all-cause mortality over an average follow-up of 6 years. METHODS: A …

The Effects Of A High-Carbohydrate Versus A High-Fat Shake On Biomarkers Of Metabolism And Glycemic Control When Used To Interrupt A 38-Hour Fast: A Randomized Crossover Study, Cameron Jacobsen, Landon Deru, Bruce W. Bailey
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
As the link between metabolic health and chronic diseases have come into focus, it has highlighted the need to establish methods for improving metabolic flexibility. The ability to efficiently switch metabolic fuels from glucose to fatty acid-derived ketones is an indication of good metabolic health. Regular fasting allows the body to make the metabolic switch to ketones more often, which is commonly identified through the measurement of the ketone beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Measuring both BHB and glucose levels can provide information about the body’s response to various foods, fasting regimens, or other metabolic stressors, and give valuable insights to measuring a …

Effects Of Acute Late Sleep Restriction On Strength, Power, And Running Speed In Recreationally Active Females, Karolina Iznerowicz, Jared W. Coburn, Sydney Leisz, Trevor Gillum, Michael Robinson, William Boyer
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Previous research suggests that late sleep restriction (SR) paired with exercise in the morning does not have a significant impact on sport performance measures. However, this evidence is based on research conducted primarily in males. PURPOSE: To examine the effects of late sleep restriction on measures of strength, speed, and power among recreationally active females. METHODS: Twenty-three (23) recreationally active (aerobic physical activity and resistance exercise at least three times a week for six months) females participated in this study (mean age 21.5 years, BMI 23 kg/m2). A randomized, cross-over design was used under two conditions, recommended sleep …
Timing Of Nordic Hamstring Exercise In Youth Soccer Players To Reduce Injury, Brooke Butterick, Carson Gantzer, Jason Siegler
Timing Of Nordic Hamstring Exercise In Youth Soccer Players To Reduce Injury, Brooke Butterick, Carson Gantzer, Jason Siegler
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) has been demonstrated to be an effective strength exercise to help mitigate the risk of hamstring injury in soccer players. It is a component of the FIFA 11+ grassroots injury prevention program, which is a series of warm-up exercises designed to be administered in large groups and at minimal cost. Recent evidence in adults suggests that the acute fatigue associated with the NHE may increase the risk of injury during training, causing some to suggest moving the NHE until the end of training. PURPOSE: To determine whether this same level of fatigue persists in young …

Resistance Exercise, Muscle Strength, Physical Function And Quality Of Life In Head And Neck Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemoradiation, Ezrie Pace, Kathryn Dispennette, Dukagjin Blakaj, Zachary Chaplow, Brian Focht
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Chemoradiation therapy (CRT) is the standard of care treatment for Head and Neck Cancer (HNCa) patients. Despite its established therapeutic efficacy, adverse effects accompanying CRT result in clinically-meaningful declines in muscle strength, physical function and quality of life (QOL). The adverse effects observed during CRT place HNCa patients at heightened risk for functional decline, mortality, and morbidity. Accordingly, there is a pressing need to evaluate the utility of supportive care interventions, such as resistance exercise (RE), to attenuate the deleterious effects observed during CRT. PURPOSE: Determine the utility of implementing a group-mediated cognitive behavioral (GMCB) RE intervention in the treatment …
