The Relationship Between Cerebral Pulsatility Index And Indices Of Cerebral Vascular Autoregulation, Ken Perry, Alison Ortiz, John Kolade, Prarthi Shah, R Matthew Brothers Feb 2024

The Relationship Between Cerebral Pulsatility Index And Indices Of Cerebral Vascular Autoregulation, Ken Perry, Alison Ortiz, John Kolade, Prarthi Shah, R Matthew Brothers

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Reduced cerebral vascular function/health is a precursor to various cerebral vascular diseases and neurocognitive conditions including stroke, cognitive decline, and Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Cerebral vascular pulsatility index (PI) is a measure of cerebral vascular stiffness and is positively correlated with many of the aforementioned conditions. In addition, cerebral autoregulation, the ability to maintain cerebral blood flow relatively constant in the face of changes in arterial blood pressure, is also impaired in many of the aforementioned conditions. However, to the best of our knowledge the relationship between these two commonly assessed parameters of cerebral vascular function/health remains unknown. PURPOSE …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Endothelial dysfunction is characterized by the unbalance between vasodilatory and vasoconstrictor mechanisms. Furthermore, this is recognized as the initial step to developing cardiovascular disease. Exercise plays an important role in both cardiac rehabilitation and cardiovascular risk prevention. However, some new exercise modalities, such as high-intensity interval training (HIIT), are becoming more popular, and limited information about their effect on the endothelium is available. PURPOSE: to determine what volume of HIIT will improve endothelial function than continuous moderate exercise intensity. METHODS: Six young apparently healthy subjects were recruited for seven laboratory visits. The first visit included a graded exercise test, in …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

There is growing interest in utilizing nasal breathing (NB) in exercise routines to improve performance. However, there is uncertainty on the impact of such exercise on inflammatory biomarkers in circulation and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), which play a significant role in immune response. PBMCs can undergo functional changes from interactions with exercise-related cytokines, potentially inducing a more efficient immune response. PURPOSE: This study examined the acute responses of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in circulation and PBMCs following a maximal exercise with NB. METHODS: Eleven physically healthy, sedentary men (age = 20.63 ± 1.36, BMI = 26.03 ± 3.16 kg/m …

'Super' Shoes Do Not Affect Jump Performance, Marshall Tousant, Francesca Aquilino, Ernesto Balderrama, Chaehyun Byun, Raquel J. Cavazos, Shelby Gerner, Cheyenne Martinez, Austin Riffe, Michael D. Oldham, Vipa Bernhardt Feb 2024

'Super' Shoes Do Not Affect Jump Performance, Marshall Tousant, Francesca Aquilino, Ernesto Balderrama, Chaehyun Byun, Raquel J. Cavazos, Shelby Gerner, Cheyenne Martinez, Austin Riffe, Michael D. Oldham, Vipa Bernhardt

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Marathon run times have been dropping rapidly in recent years and many believe that ‘super’ shoes are the reason. ‘Super’ shoes are made with light-weight, highly compliant and resilient midsole foam and a rigid carbon fiber plate. The material used for the foam can store mechanical energy, i.e., compliance, and return the energy, i.e., resilience (Worobets et al, 2014). The carbon fiber plates increase bending stiffness and changes the leverage of the ankle and metatarsophalangeal point, such that the body is propelled upward and forward (Roy & Stefanyshyn, 2006). Indeed, there is evidence that ‘super’ shoes can improve running economy …

Effects Of Endurance Training On Skeletal Muscle Mass And Inflammation In A Rat Model Of Heart Failure, Aaron Garcia, Dillon Harris, Quinten Pigg, Daniela Sayuri Inoue, Mariana Janini Gomes

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Chronic disease states including heart failure (HF) often lead to reduced physical activity, resulting in disuse and low-level systemic inflammation, which contribute to the decline in muscle mass and function. An important goal of therapy in HF patients is to counteract or prevent the development of skeletal muscle alterations in order to restore a normal functional capacity. Exercise is an established means of improving exercise capacity and quality of life in patients with HF. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the impact of an endurance program on skeletal muscle mass and inflammation in a rat model of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH)-induced …

Blood Pressure Variability In Young Male Adult Habitual Vapers, Rie V. Conley, Claire E. Kissell, Ziba Taherzadeh, Danny Dubroy, Benjamin E. Young, Ziyad Ben Taleb, Paul J. Fadel

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The use of e-cigarettes (i.e., vaping) has risen dramatically in the last few years. Vaping is more appealing and accessible to young people than traditional smoking. The ease of use can increase the frequency of vaping, which may increase the amount of nicotine consumed. Nicotine is a potent vasoconstrictor that may also affect blood pressure (BP). Indeed, previous studies have shown that traditional cigarette smoking increases BP variability. This is noteworthy because elevated BP variability has been shown to predict future development of cardiovascular disease. However, whether habitual vaping influences BP variability remains unknown. PURPOSE: To test the hypothesis …

Relationship Between Intestinal Permeability And Microvascular Responses In A High-Risk Hispanic Population Of The Rio Grande Valley, Sophia M. Moreno, Alissa Olvera, Abigail Gomez, Ryan Russell, Melody Cantu, Andrea Toledo, Yu Lun Tai

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) has ~3x higher rates of diagnosed cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) than the US, which combine to be the leading cause of preventable death in the developed world. Microvascular blood flow (MBF) responses are an early indicator of vascular insulin resistance, and is blunted with obesity, T2D, and those at high risk for T2D. We have previously shown that apparently healthy people in the RGV display impaired MBF responses, helping explain the disparities noted with chronic disease. However mechanisms explaining this early vascular insulin resistance remain unexplored. Recent studies indicate that increased …
