Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A sample population of 139 fifth grade students, ranging in age from nine years to twelve years eleven months, was drawn from a data pool created from test results collected from four elementary schools in a south central Kentucky municipality. Tests used in the study were the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – Revised (WISC-R) and Cattell’s Children’s Personality Questionnaire (CPQ).

These data were examined to determine the relationship of extraversion to performance on a standardized intelligence test.

Correlations for the experimental variables and extraversion ranged from .12 to .51.

O. Henry’S Use Of Stereotypes In His New York City Stories: An Example Of The Utilization Of Folklore In Literature, Martin Ostrofsky Jun 1982

O. Henry’S Use Of Stereotypes In His New York City Stories: An Example Of The Utilization Of Folklore In Literature, Martin Ostrofsky

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Stereotyping is a folkloristic process which permits people to reduce the complexities of the real world into simplified, abstract terms. O. Henry one of America’s most popular short story writers, made generous use of stereotypes in his stories. By examining O. Henry’s use of stereotypes, insight may be gained into the essential role which folklore often plays in creative literature. Stereotypes greatly influence the composition, function and reception of O. Henry’s work. O. Henry’s personal habits and circumstances demanded that he produce a prolific stream of short stories which would have the greatest popular appeal. Clever manipulation of stereotypes permitted …

Meal Interference With Antibiotics Administered Orally In Kentucky Hospitals, Shirley Harper May 1982

Meal Interference With Antibiotics Administered Orally In Kentucky Hospitals, Shirley Harper

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Hospitals within the State of Kentucky were surveyed to determine if the size of the hospitals influence the frequency of potential meal interference with the administration of oral antibiotics where the "empty stomach" concept must be fulfilled. One hundred and ten hospitals responded to the mailed survey. Of the responding hospitals 103 were short-term and 7 were long-term hospitals. The frequency of conflict was greater for nourishments than with meal interference. Ninety-three and six tenths percent or 103 answered yes when asked if all patients received nourishments on request. The conflicts of potential meal interference ranged from 15 to 40 …

A Mammalian Virus (Sv40) Inductest For Putative Carcinogens, Howard Blount May 1982

A Mammalian Virus (Sv40) Inductest For Putative Carcinogens, Howard Blount

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The in vitro mammalian virus inductest is based on the measurement of induced viral gene expression from Simian virus 40 (SV40) transformed weanling Syrian hamster kidney cells (clone E). Upon challenge by many DNA-damaging chemical agents, infectious virions were produced which were quantitated by assay on a cell line permissive to SV40, such as the highly contact inhibited African green monkey kidney cells, CV-1P. Some known carcinogens and non-carcinogens were tested in this research including mitomycin C, aflatoxins Bl and Gl, sterigmatocystin and several polycyclic hydrocarbons.

Lysolecithin (a membrane permeabilizing agent) and S9 mix (a pre -metabolizing mixture) were used …

Investigation Of The Role Of Phenols In Oxidative Degradation Of Coal-Derived Naphthas, Jeffrey Macke May 1982

Investigation Of The Role Of Phenols In Oxidative Degradation Of Coal-Derived Naphthas, Jeffrey Macke

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The oxidative instability of coal liquids is a possible problem for the utilization of these alternate fuels. Past experience with both petroleum and coal-derived distillates indicates that heteroatomic species are intimately involved in such degradation. However, the exact nature of the chemistry is, in many cases, unclear. The goal of this work is to study the role of phenols in the chemistry of oxidative degradation of naphthas from a variety of current conversion processes. The effects of exposure to oxygen, metal surfaces, and metal salts have been investigated in order to identify the major routes leading to gum formation.

Coal-derived …

Caroline Gordon: A Sense Of Place, Frances Perdue May 1982

Caroline Gordon: A Sense Of Place, Frances Perdue

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Place, as it transcends the immediate setting of a work, is an essential element of Caroline Gordon’s early novels. She looks to the past and to the region of her birth to focus on the traditional South. She shows her characters’ changing attitudes toward the Cavalier Myth, a view that promotes the value of the land, the patriarchal family, and an anachronistic code of honor. To them, the South is unique, and they resist all efforts to change this “given social order.” However, Gordon begins to recognize that change is inevitable. Thus, she reveals her characters’ succumbing to the rising …

An Evaluation For Modification (Shorter) Of The Kirby-Bauer Susceptibility Test, Walter Norris Jr. Apr 1982

An Evaluation For Modification (Shorter) Of The Kirby-Bauer Susceptibility Test, Walter Norris Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The Kirby-Bauer test for determining antibiotic effectiveness is widely used in laboratories. The 10 to 20 hour incubation time needed to obtain useful results is a disadvantage of that test. This experimental research was developed to test a modification which could provide useful results in 5 hours.

The modification employed in this experimental technique used an increased inoculum at a 1.0 McFarland standard instead of the customary 0.5 standard. The 2 to 5 hour incubation period in the trypticase soy broth was deleted. The Mueller Hinton plates were incubated for 5 hours and then observed for resistant and/or sensitive patterns. …
