The Relationship Between Meteorological Patterns And Rural Ground Ozone Concentration, Dasen Kendrick Dec 2005

The Relationship Between Meteorological Patterns And Rural Ground Ozone Concentration, Dasen Kendrick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Throughout the United States, many areas exceed the level of safe ground ozone (O3) concentration. Non-natural emissions made as result of daily human activities and natural emissions react photochemically to produce ground O3 concentration. Variation in ground O3 concentration is controlled by local and regional emissions, synoptic and mesoscale meteorology, and boundary layer chemistry and dynamics. When the right meteorological variables are present, rural areas can have unhealthy air conditions with high levels of ground O3 concentration similar to that of metropolitan areas. Particular ground O3 concentration episodes were analyzed to summarize what meteorological variables constitute a healthy or hazardous …

The National Weather Service's Polygon Method: Warning Dissemination Of The Future, Crystal L. Bergman Oct 2005

The National Weather Service's Polygon Method: Warning Dissemination Of The Future, Crystal L. Bergman

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The National Weather Service (NWS) is continuously improving its forecasting skills, but forecasters still cannot accurately predict the path of a tornado or a severe thunderstorm. The NWS has developed a new warning system in which the warned area is outlined by a polygon, not a county boundary. The polygon-waming approach is expected to significantly reduce the total square-mile area of warnings not followed by an event, called the False Alarm Area. There are three central issues concerning the failure of the polygon-warning method: I) the size of the counties impacted by a storm, 2) the impact of the new …

Flow Reversal Events Increase The Abundance Of Nontroglobitic Fish In The Subterranean Rivers Of Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky, Michael Ruhl

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Mammoth Cave National Park (MCNP) is home to the longest cave system in the World and is dissected by the Green River, one of the most speciose watersheds on the continent. Cave springs create a direct aquatic link between subterranean waterways and the Green River. The history of these subterranean river systems is filled with eyewitness reports of various species of surface water (nontroglobitic) fishes, including introduced rainbow trout. This study documents the occurrence of Green River fish species in the cave system of MCNP. Four sites were sampled over a two year period using a variety of gears. In …

Globalization, Urban Competitiveness, And Human Capital: Davidson County, Tennessee's Place In The Equation, James Russ May 2005

Globalization, Urban Competitiveness, And Human Capital: Davidson County, Tennessee's Place In The Equation, James Russ

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Profound changes in the structure of the global economy since the end of World War II have drastically affected the way governments, businesses, and individuals interact with one another. The development of regional trading alliances (European Union, NAFTA, APEC), the end of the Cold War, and the rapid development of information technologies have contributed to new global economic theories that are being adopted by places large and small. Simply put, economic paradigms have changed. Local concerns have become more prevalent in the public debate over economic, political, and societal changes as a whole. The goal of my research is to …
