The Risky Shift Among Friends And In Arbitrarily Formed Groups, Bryan Crow Jul 1972

The Risky Shift Among Friends And In Arbitrarily Formed Groups, Bryan Crow

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Michael Wallach and Nathan Kogan (1959) devised the Choice Dilemmas Questionnaire (Appendix A) for scaling the propensity of individuals to take risks. The Choice Dilemmas Questionnaire (CDQ) requires the respondent to indicate the lowest probability of success he would accept before he would advise the central figure in each of 12 hypothetical decision situations to choose the riskier--but more attractive--of two options. Accepting slimmer chances of success (higher risks of failure) yields a iowei (riskier) seoi-e. The t>core on a given item can range from a risky low of one chance in ten to a conservative high--in most experiments--of …

The Relation Of Eye-Contact To Retention Of Information In A Public Speaking Situation, William Weathers Jul 1972

The Relation Of Eye-Contact To Retention Of Information In A Public Speaking Situation, William Weathers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

If the purpose of speaking to others is communication, then the purpose of teaching public speaking must be to aid in the learning of those speech skills which will facilitate effective communication. In striving to achieve this goal, every opportunity must be taken to emphasize areas of development which are particularly important. Ideally, such areas should be those involving precepts long held in places of importance by the tradition of the speech discipline and verified through scientific examination. As Clarence T. Simon has written: During its long life speech has accumulated diverse beliefs and assumptions; many of them from speculative …

Libertinism, Political Activism And Religious Conservatism: Some Correlates Of Anomie, George Wade Jul 1972

Libertinism, Political Activism And Religious Conservatism: Some Correlates Of Anomie, George Wade

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study concerns college students in particular, the attitudes they hold toward both their society and their own personal life within that society, and how these attitudes affect their behavior. The six specific variables being dealt with are libertinism, religious conservatism, political activism, personal anomie, systemic anomie, and probusiness. These are viewed from the perspective that the attitudes and opinions held by the students will influence their behavior. Specifically, this perspective views feelings of anomie or alienation (the two terms will be used interchangeably throughout) as affecting the religious, political, and libertine views and behavior of the students. This …

The Theatrical Innovations Of Charles Laughton, Gary Joseph Jones Jul 1972

The Theatrical Innovations Of Charles Laughton, Gary Joseph Jones

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In most journalistic studies the film career of Charles Laughton overshadows his theatrical activities to the extent that the reader is hardly aware of the importance of his theatrical innovations to the theater of our time. The more commercial side of Laughton’s career was publicized while his artistic efforts, as characterized by the innovations, were frequently forgotten. More people remember him as the man who played Captain Bligh in the movies than as the man who worked with Bertolt Brecht, created the First Drama Quartette and developed a new American art form, Readers’ Theatre.

The rationale of this study is …

A Study Of The Seasonal Incidence Of The Arthropod & Helminth Parasites Of The Prairie Vole, Microtus Ochrogaster, & The Wood Mouse, Peromyscus Leucopus, In An Area Of Warren County, Kentucky, Richard Buckner Jun 1972

A Study Of The Seasonal Incidence Of The Arthropod & Helminth Parasites Of The Prairie Vole, Microtus Ochrogaster, & The Wood Mouse, Peromyscus Leucopus, In An Area Of Warren County, Kentucky, Richard Buckner

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

One-hundred and fifty Microtus ochrogaster and one-hundred and fifty-five Peromyscus leucopus were examined for arthropod and helminth parasites during a study from November, 1970 through November, 1971. The mean monthly burdens, per host, of each species of parasite and observations on the seasonal incidence of each species are reported.

Nineteen species of arthropod parasites were found; these include eight species of mites, two of chiggers, one of ticks, two of lice, five of fleas, and one of hots. Most of these species exhibited very little host specificity, although there was a definite host preference. Heavier ectoparasite burdens were found on …

The Colonelette (June 1972), Department Of Library Special Collections Jun 1972

The Colonelette (June 1972), Department Of Library Special Collections

The Colonelette

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

Criminal Homicide In Warren County Kentucky: 1970-1971, Timothy Carter Jun 1972

Criminal Homicide In Warren County Kentucky: 1970-1971, Timothy Carter

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Individuals resorting to violent aggression in the form of criminal homicide have often been the object of great public concern. Of the many actions punishable by criminal law, the taking of a human life by another human being most often entails a severe sanction, especially when it has been done deliberately and with a degree of premeditation. Public fear and concern dictate forceful sanctioning toward the homicide offender or offenders; no other criminal offense is so likely to result in the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Asiatic Cholera In Kentucky 1832 To 1873, Nancy Baird May 1972

Asiatic Cholera In Kentucky 1832 To 1873, Nancy Baird

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Asiatic cholera has been called the scourge of the nineteenth century, for it caused the untimely death of millions throughout the world. During its four visits to the United States, unknown thousands of Kentuckians fell victims to the disease. In attempting to prevent the dreaded scourge, Kentuckians became more conscious of the need for cleaner cities, pure water and adequate sewage disposal. Modern waterworks facilities, sewage treatment and disposal facilities have provided the means by which the United States has conquered this scourge of the nineteenth century, for with these facilities cholera is the easiest of all communicable diseases to …

Corporate Warfare Or Corporate Kinship? The Effects Of Military & Familial Metaphors On Japanese & American Organizational Culture, Joan Flora

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study was undertaken to determine the dominant cultural metaphors at work in American and Japanese organizational culture, to examine the ways in which each society interprets these metaphors, and to assess the importance of the metaphors relative to intercultural communication. Using a combination of qualitative content analysis, rhetorical criticism, contextual analysis, and non-participant observation, two of the most dominant metaphors in both cultures, business-as-war and business-as-family, were discovered and examined. The research data comes from a variety of books, scholarly and popular articles, pamphlets, unpublished papers, films, and miscellaneous documents. These materials cover many disciplines: communication, history, popular culture, …

Symbolism In The Poetry Of William Butler Yeats, Alana White May 1972

Symbolism In The Poetry Of William Butler Yeats, Alana White

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis is a study of the development of the symbolic system formulated by William Butler Yeats and his subsequent application of this system to his poetry, with special attention to the rose and the stone. To comprehend and thereby fully appreciate Yeats's poetry requires some knowledge of the forces working together to form the basis of his philosophy and symbolic system. These forces and the system form the subject of the first chapter. Foremost among the many influences are his Irish birth, his associates (among them his father, John Yeats; his uncle, George Pollexfen; John O'Leary; and Madame Helena …
