The Future Of Epilepsy Care In The United Kingdom: A Roadmap For Technology-Enabled Transformation, Rohit Shankar, John Terry Jun 2026

The Future Of Epilepsy Care In The United Kingdom: A Roadmap For Technology-Enabled Transformation, Rohit Shankar, John Terry

Peninsula Medical School

Epilepsy is recognized to be a significant cause of premature mortality, socio-economic distress and poor quality of life in economically developed countries. Despite clear clinical guidelines, epilepsy care is marked by delayed diagnosis, fragmented management, high emergency admission rates, and pronounced health inequalities affecting rural populations, ethnic minority groups, and people with intellectual disabilities. Diagnostic pathways remain inefficient, with prolonged waits for electroencephalography (EEG), low sensitivity of routine investigations, and repeated inconclusive testing. Long-term management continues to depend on infrequent hospital visits and unreliable patient recall, contributing to suboptimal seizure control, avoidable morbidity, and preventable mortality. In the United Kingdom, …

Exploiting Underground Mine Topology For Resilient Concurrent Lora Mesh Emergency Communications: Architecture, Protocol Design, And Performance Analysis, Hilary Kelechi Anabi, Samuel Frimpong, Muhammad Azeem Raza Jun 2026

Exploiting Underground Mine Topology For Resilient Concurrent Lora Mesh Emergency Communications: Architecture, Protocol Design, And Performance Analysis, Hilary Kelechi Anabi, Samuel Frimpong, Muhammad Azeem Raza

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Underground mine emergencies compromise fixed communication infrastructure exactly when situational awareness is most critical for effective rescue operations. Existing LoRa mesh protocols fail in underground mines because they ignore the structured topology of tunnel networks, specifically the waveguide effect along straight galleries, severe signal discontinuity at junctions, and the dead-end geometry of working faces. This paper presents the Topology-Aware Concurrent LoRa (TACL) mesh protocol, in which each node autonomously infers its structural role from local RF observations and packet header information, without GPS, pre-loaded mine maps, or central coordination. Role classification resolves the contender estimation problem (Formula presented.) left open …

Not Too Early, Not All At Once: Design Tensions In Ai-Mediated Self-Disclosure In Online Dating, Pei-Hua Tsai, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Anthony Tang, Yung-Ju Chang Jun 2026

Not Too Early, Not All At Once: Design Tensions In Ai-Mediated Self-Disclosure In Online Dating, Pei-Hua Tsai, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Anthony Tang, Yung-Ju Chang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online dating relies on self-disclosure, yet initial conversations are fragile: users must navigate uncertainty around timing, boundaries, and reciprocity with little shared context. While advances in AI raise the possibility of mediating disclosure, how such support might reshape the experience of early-stage relational disclosure remains underexplored. We conducted 29 semi-structured interviews to examine how daters envision AI-mediated self-disclosure in online dating. Our findings surface recurring design tensions rather than simple opportunities or risks. Participants welcomed guidance that could pace disclosure, support reflection, and reduce social awkwardness, but stressed preserving agency and authorship. They valued interpretive assistance for sense-making of ambiguous …

Language Embeddings Meet Shallow Autoencoders, Rodrigo Alves, Vojtěch Vančura, Pavel Kordík, Antoine Ledent Jun 2026

Language Embeddings Meet Shallow Autoencoders, Rodrigo Alves, Vojtěch Vančura, Pavel Kordík, Antoine Ledent

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Shallow autoencoders are appealing recommenders due to their simplicity, scalability, and competitive retrieval quality, but they struggle in strict cold-start settings where new items have no interactions. We propose an inductive shallow autoencoder that leverages item side information (language embeddings) by fixing the decoder to item features and learning only an encoder in the same semantic space. To prevent trivial self-reconstruction without enforcing a hard zero diagonal, we introduce diagonal gating: a leave-one-item-out objective that blocks the self-copy shortcut only for the item being updated while retaining context from the rest of the user history. An alternating-style optimization trains the …

Zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) is a powerful infrastructure for proving the correctness of a program execution with a succinct proof, attracting significant interest from researchers, developers, and users. It has been widely used in applications such as blockchain rollups, privacy-preserving machine learning, and off-chain computation. As the field grows, a wide range of zkVMs have been proposed. However, they adopt different choices in instruction formats, trace layouts, and proving backends, which results in a highly heterogeneous design landscape and makes it difficult to understand the relations among these systems. To bridge this gap, we provide a comprehensive study of zkVMs that …

Enhancing Pointing Gestures Of Non-Hmd Users In Asymmetric Collocated Mixed Reality Collaboration, Nam-Dang Vo, Van-Vinh Thai, Anthony Tang, Khanh-Duy Le Jun 2026

Enhancing Pointing Gestures Of Non-Hmd Users In Asymmetric Collocated Mixed Reality Collaboration, Nam-Dang Vo, Van-Vinh Thai, Anthony Tang, Khanh-Duy Le

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A common collocated group setting in mixed-reality (MR) collaboration is a person wearing a MR headset (HMD user) and presenting MR contents to audiences who are not provided with such specialized devices (Non-HMD users). In this setting, while Non-HMD users can view the MR environment shown on a large physical display, it still remains challenging for the HMD user to interpret their pointing gesture when they spatially refer to objects in the MR environment. To address this, we designed and evaluated two pointing techniques—SCREEN and SCREEN+SPACE—that support Non-HMD users in referring to MR content. Screen pointing allows users to refer …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Savouring positive work experiences can promote positive affect and well-being at work, yet there is limited guidance on how digital applications can support workers to engage in savouring. We developed HappyCal, a work-focused savouring application offering two forms of savouring support: text-based, a common modality in workplace reflection tools, and images, a largely unexplored approach in work-related savouring. We conducted an exploratory qualitative study where participants (N=36) used HappyCal over five days and engaged in savouring through either a text-only modality (n=17) or text input paired with image output (n=19). We found that (1) participants in both groups reported heightened …

The study created a hybrid dataset of 20,627 emails by combining 18,631 real messages from the Kaggle Email Classification Dataset with 1,996 synthetic emails. The synthetic emails were generated using four large language models LLaMA-3, Falcon, LLaVA, and Mistral to capture …

From Thin Films To Energy Systems: A Perspective-Oriented Translational Framework For Deployable Functional Materials, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam Jun 2026

From Thin Films To Energy Systems: A Perspective-Oriented Translational Framework For Deployable Functional Materials, Mohammad Nur-E-Alam

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The translation of high-performance thin-film materials from lab-scale development to field-deployable energy systems remains a significant holdup in sustainable technology development. The real-world impact of functional thin films, nanocomposites, and emerging photovoltaic architectures is often limited by issues with scalability, interfacial reliability, environmental stability, and system-level integration, despite their excellent optical and electronic performance at the device level. A translational framework that is deployment-oriented and systematically connects interface-centric device integration, application-context validation, system-level performance feedback, and process-aware thin-film engineering has been presented in this article. Common structure-property-deployment trade-offs are identified through a comparative analysis of representative case domains, such as …

Social Exclusion Cues And Collective Action Motivation In Environmental Campaigns: The Buffering Role Of Social Support, Hwan-Ho Noh, Warren B. Chik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

This study examines the influence of social exclusion cues on public engagement with environmental campaigns on social media, focusing on how such cues affect advertising attitudes and collective action motivation. Across two experimental studies, we investigated whether low engagement metrics, such as a small number of likes, function as symbolic exclusion cues that reduce perceived public support. The results indicate that social exclusion cues negatively affect advertising attitudes and collective action motivation, ultimately decreasing the intention to engage with the campaign. However, the presence of social support cues, which signal sustained public interest and social endorsement, effectively mitigated these negative …

Calcium Signaling And Postsynaptic Density Dynamics: The Roles Of Calmodulin In Synaptic Protein Regulation, Keyaa Dilip Shah, Yonghong Zhang

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences Faculty Publications

Calcium signaling in neuronal cells is the principal mechanism underlying learning and synaptic plasticity, whereas the postsynaptic density (PSD) is an important center where calcium-dependent processes are organized and regulated. This review explores the roles of calmodulin (CaM) in facilitating calcium-dependent modulation of the activities of synaptic proteins in the PSD. We focus on the molecular processes through which CaM interacts with calcium signals to regulate the function, localization, and interactions of central synaptic proteins, including calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII), membrane-associated guanylate kinases (MAGUKs), and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors. We aim to summarize recent advances in structural, biochemical, and imaging …

Reinforcement Learning-Enabled Resource Allocation For Distributed And Uncoordinated Cognitive Radio Networks, Ankita Vijay Tondwalkar Jun 2026

Reinforcement Learning-Enabled Resource Allocation For Distributed And Uncoordinated Cognitive Radio Networks, Ankita Vijay Tondwalkar

Theses

To keep up with the ever-increasing performance demand from wireless applications, wireless networks necessitate to operate following an efficient use of the available radio spectrum. Since the radio spectrum is a limited resource, the increasing demand for wireless services and applications to support a wide spectrum of users is a challenge in itself and therefore requires advanced techniques to manage and utilize radio resources efficiently. Dynamic spectrum access (DSA) and sharing play a crucial role in improving the utilization of the radio spectrum, as it departs from the traditional approach of static radio spectrum band allocation which usually leads to …

Echelon Trust Network: An Exploration Of Speculative Design And Critique Of Manipulative Technologies, Sydney Rowley Jun 2026

Echelon Trust Network: An Exploration Of Speculative Design And Critique Of Manipulative Technologies, Sydney Rowley

Theses

As emerging technologies become increasingly integrated into everyday life, concerns  surrounding privacy, surveillance, and personal autonomy continue to grow. Artificial  intelligence, data tracking, targeted advertising, and location-monitoring have intensified public  anxieties about the collection and use of personal data. These concerns echo themes explored in  classic dystopian literature, which have long warned of societies where privacy is sacrificed for  security and human identity is reduced to data. Echelon Trust Network explores these anxieties  through a speculative design project that imagines a future in which constant surveillance and  algorithmic trust scoring govern social interactions.  Developed as a motion graphics piece in …

Creating A Framework For Quantifying Wildland Urban Interface (Wui) Fire Vulnerability Factors, Ryan L. Delalio Jun 2026

Creating A Framework For Quantifying Wildland Urban Interface (Wui) Fire Vulnerability Factors, Ryan L. Delalio

Construction Management

Wildfires have been the focus of geospatial research for decades. Climate change and increased suburban development in California are leading to an increase of Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). These zones are at higher wildfire risk, and a metric is needed to determine the most vulnerable communities to help them assess their personal wildfire risk. By analyzing current WUI wildfire vulnerability literature, the main contributing factors behind the impact of wildfires in California emerge. These factors are then paired with datasets that contain geospatial information about the factors to help us find the locations of highest vulnerability. This paper serves as …
