International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 12(2): 764-776, 2019. Forty-seven percent of volunteer firefighter line of duty deaths are caused by cardiovascular events. Aggressive cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor reduction and improved physical fitness could reduce CVD mortality within this population. We assessed CVD risk factors and physical fitness in a large cohort of volunteer firefighters to help establish a health and fitness profile of this population, which may serve as evidence for the need to initiate programs aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality caused by CVD in the volunteer fire service. Seventy-four male volunteer firefighters were assessed for eight CVD …

International Journal of Exercise Science 11(4): 1019-1030, 2018. Using a physically active video game presents an opportunity for a person to engage in exercise in the privacy of their own home, yet still receive some feedback on the quality of their exercise performance. The purpose of this project was to compare the physical activity between participating in a Zumba exercise class led by a human and using a Zumba video game. Eight women (33.0 ± 3.0 y, 34.8 ± 8.1 % body fat) who regularly participated in a Zumba exercise class were measured for heart rate, number of steps taken, …

Leadership In Higher Education In A Culture Of Declining Relevance And Incivility, Sam Evans Jun 2018

Leadership In Higher Education In A Culture Of Declining Relevance And Incivility, Sam Evans

International Journal of Leadership and Change

The institution of higher education is experiencing numerous challenges, and questions are surfacing regarding our relevance in an environment where the focus is on workforce development. Concerns are being raised about the preparation of our graduates for the demands of the workplace and, internally, we are dealing with behaviors characterizing a culture of incivility. These are not new concerns, but the prevalence of disconnects between higher education and the realities of the workplace appear to be increasing. These perceptions of disconnects tend to be exacerbated by behaviors occurring on university campuses that in some cases have become violent and/or disruptive …

Chinese Higher Educator Perceptions Toward Leadership Effectiveness In Regard To Gender, Kanglei Meng, John Baker

International Journal of Leadership and Change

This article discusses Chinese educator perceptions of effective leadership behaviors in order to determine how these teachers define effectiveness and whether a correlation exists between their perception and leaders’ gender. Factors include conscious and unconscious gender bias, Chinese culture, historical background, and identity. As a male-dominated country, China has been deeply influenced by Confucianism; hence, limited attention has been on female leadership. The article identifies and reviews three Women’s Revolutions in China and their effects in the past century in order to predict the status of female leadership. The researcher used the Chinese version of the LPI survey and conducted …

Prestige-Seeking Across Urban-Serving Research Universities, Desiree Zerquera Jun 2018

Prestige-Seeking Across Urban-Serving Research Universities, Desiree Zerquera

International Journal of Leadership and Change

This manuscript seeks to better understand the extent to which urban universities have pursued prestige over time. I situate the institution-level decisions made by campus leaders over time and within the higher education context to better understand how these efforts collectively reflect broader forces within the higher education environment towards prestige that aligns with standards of excellence misaligned with the equity-serving mission of urban-serving universities. Findings demonstrate widespread engagement in prestige seeking among urban universities, with greater engagement in areas of enhancing research revenue, graduate enrollment and completions, and enhancing incoming student SAT scores. Implications for administrators at these institutions …

The Effect Of Campus Configuration On Ninth-Grade Achievement, James M. Finch, James L. Pate, Lantry L. Brockmeier, Michael J. Bochenko, Dianne C. Dees

International Journal of Leadership and Change

The purpose of this mixed-methods sequential explanatory research study was to determine whether there were significant differences between high schools having no freshman facility, a freshman wing, or a freshman campus on eight student performance measures. A second purpose was to examine principals’ perceptions of how their schools transition freshmen and how these transition strategies and arrangements worked. Of the eight ANOVAs conducted, only one analysis was statistically significant between the school configurations. In facilities using a freshman campus, high school students with disabilities earned significantly more core credit units than their counterparts in schools using no freshman facility. During …

Female Leaders - It’S Not Just About Gender: A Case Study, Nancy Lambe, Jeanne D. Maes Jun 2018

Female Leaders - It’S Not Just About Gender: A Case Study, Nancy Lambe, Jeanne D. Maes

International Journal of Leadership and Change

From the passing of the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972, females have competed for previously all male-held jobs. Suddenly finding themselves on unfamiliar ground, women needed workplace survival guides more than workplace success guides. Over the years, numerous studies have tracked women on their way to the top of organizations. These studies noted while there are more women in the workplace today, overall women are still struggling with career advancement and, in particular, with role models for successful managerial leadership. As of 2014, nearly 52% of all professional-level positions in the United States were held by women; yet they …

University Identity Change Through A Psychological Sense Of Community Framework: A Case Study Of The Elimar Model, Elizabeth F. Turesky, Mary Anne Peabody

International Journal of Leadership and Change

Leading through identity change is a highly emotive experience. When leadership is understood as an emotional community development process, the benefits for repurposing identity are greatly enhanced. This article introduces a change model that embeds emotional awareness throughout a four-phased process, adapting concepts originally presented in McMillan and Chavis’s (1986) psychological sense of community (PSOC) theory and Scott and Jaffee’s (1989) change curve model. In this case study, we focus on a four-year multi-campus northeastern United States public university as a model to investigate how individuals in leadership positions consider the role of affect in creating positive identity change to …

The Fallacy Of Selecting The Right Person For The Job, Seth Allcorn, Howard F. Stein, Carrie M. Duncan Jun 2018

The Fallacy Of Selecting The Right Person For The Job, Seth Allcorn, Howard F. Stein, Carrie M. Duncan

International Journal of Leadership and Change

Recruiting senior level higher education executives is more challenging than the customary and presumably rational approach of forming a search committee, running an advertisement or hiring a search firm, interviewing candidates, and making a selection. This article discusses many of the organizational dynamics that suggest logic and rationality often are lacking in recruiting for these important positions. The inevitable presence of conflicting interpersonal and intergroup dynamics that may not be discussable in any meaningful way compromises recruiting outcomes. Hiring the best person for the position may well not occur.

Azucena Villaflor, The Mothers Of The Plaza De Mayo, And Struggle To End Disappearances, Sam Mcfarland

International Journal of Leadership and Change

Azucena Villaflor, a poor Argentine woman with little education did more than any other person to place the problem of “disappearances” on the world’s agenda. In 1977, Villaflor led in creating the Mother of the Plaza de Mayo to protest the Argentine’s dictators disappearing of thousands of its own citizens. A person is “disappeared” when a government or its agents kills that person, hides their remains, and denies any knowledge of their whereabouts. Thousands were disappeared by Argentina’s dictatorship between 1977 and 1983; thousands of others have been disappeared around this world. The work Villaflor stated led to the creations …

An Environmentalist view of Kentucky and its Natural “Suitors” by Literary Analysis

Abstract

In the book “Divine Right’s Trip”, by Gurney Norman, the author provides a more modern, psychedelic-age epic, where the traditional theme of homecoming, often witnessed in Greek epics like the Odyssey, makes a connection with environmentalism. One reason for the unique combination of these themes is the effect created by a specific appeal for environmental support accompanied with the return of the main character, Divine Right (D.R.), to his small hometown in Eastern Kentucky where coal mining remains the prevalent employer. Upon his homecoming to Kentucky, D.R …

Job Termination Survey: Faith Community Nursing, Deborah Ziebarth

International Journal of Faith Community Nursing

Research regarding community-based nurse voluntary and involuntary termination rates are limited and outdated. This study explores faith community nursing termination using a survey. Survey questions pertaining to why the termination occurred, supportive resources used during termination, and post termination behaviors are addressed. The first three reasons for termination were due to site leadership change, not a strategic priority of the hospital or faith community leadership, and organization restructuring or elimination of the program. The fourth through seventh reasons for termination were financial in nature. They were: not a financial priority to hospital or health care organization, not a financial priority …

Mindfulness And Affective Responses To Treadmill Walking In Individuals With Low Intrinsic Motivation To Exercise, Anne E. Cox, Madeline A. Roberts, Hailey L. Cates, Amanda K. Mcmahon

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 11(5): 609-624, 2018. An aversion to the sensations of physical exertion can deter engagement in physical activity. This is due in part to an associative focus in which individuals are attending to uncomfortable interoceptive cues. The purpose of this study was to test the effect of mindfulness on affective valence, ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), and enjoyment during treadmill walking. Participants (N=23; Mage=19.26, SD = 1.14) were only included in the study if they engaged in no more than moderate levels of physical activity and reported low levels of intrinsic motivation. …

A Comparison Between African-American Superintendents And School Board Members On Leadership Attributes That Contribute To Superintendent Longevity, Cynthia Wilson, Cash J. Kowalski

International Journal of Leadership and Change

The purpose of this study was to explore whether the ratings of leadership attributes by African-American superintendents and their respective school board members are comparable and whether the superintendents’ self-ratings are related to their longevity as superintendents. The rating instrument was designed to address several important leadership qualities gleaned from the literature on leadership styles and a range of other theories and studies on effective leadership. These qualities were then consolidated into four attribute categories (skills, qualities, knowledge, and emotional intelligence/EQ) that capture the essential contextual work of school district superintendents. The results of this conceptual study provide valuable information …
