Bridging The Gap: Using College Athlete Support Services As Justification For Human Development In A Commercialized Sport Management, Sayvon Jl Foster, Calvin Nite

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(6): 934-947, 2022. This study investigates the presence of competing educational foundations within college athlete support service units across the 65 ‘Power Five’ conferences to call for more human development elements within sport management education and training. To determine the orientation of professionals within these units, educational foundation is used as the measure given the role education holds in establishing and communicating norms, values, and rules of practice for professionals within the discipline. Information was gathered through staff biographies and triangulated through secondary sources (university archives and social media accounts – LinkedIn and Twitter). Of …

The Relationship Between Athletic Identity And Academic Major Chosen By Student-Athletes, Sayvon Jl Foster, Matt R. Huml

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 915-925, 2017. This study examines the correlation between athletic identity and academic major selection among intercollegiate student-athletes. A thorough review of literature focusing on academic clustering, athletic identity, and academic development leads to the development of two hypotheses – 1) student-athletes with stronger athletic identity will have a declared major of decreased academic rigor; and 2) student-athletes with stronger athletic identity will be more likely to be undecided on their major. Data were collected through a survey administered to Division I, II, and III student-athletes recording academic major and their Athletic Identity Measurement Scale …

Corporate Social Responsibility: Considerations For Sport Management In The Age Of Neoliberalism, Anthony J. Weems, Justin R. Garner, Kristi Oshiro, John N. Singer

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 900-914, 2017. For financial reasons, in efforts to maintain legitimacy, and in response to social pressures, sport organizations increasingly engage with corporate social responsibility (CSR). However, with the rise of global neoliberalism, the logic of CSR can be problematic. In this essay, we provide a brief overview, critique, and reconstruction of CSR in the sport industry. Specifically, we call into question three popularized forms of CSR: (1) diversity, inclusion, and diversity management, (2) environmental responsibility, and (3) health and physical activity-based initiatives. In a neoliberal context, CSR in sport provides, at best, a limited …

From Crisis To De-Escalation: An Examination Of Politics In A U.S. High School Steroid Testing Program, Brennan K. Berg, Kathryn Winsley, Rhema D. Fuller, Michael Hutchinson Sep 2017

From Crisis To De-Escalation: An Examination Of Politics In A U.S. High School Steroid Testing Program, Brennan K. Berg, Kathryn Winsley, Rhema D. Fuller, Michael Hutchinson

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 890-899, 2017. Preventing the use of performance enhancing drugs in sport has long been a concern for policymakers. In the United States, amidst national attention the state of Texas constructed the country’s largest steroid testing program for high school athletes. However, resource allocation steadily declined until the program was defunded in 2015. Using escalation of commitment theory as a framework, this conceptual paper examines the critical, but less studied, role of politics and de-escalation behavior that directed this distinct sport situation. By combining policy and media documents with the academic literature, this paper allows …

Coaches’ Perception Of Organizational Socialization Process Of International Student-Athletes And The Effect Of Cultural Distance: An Exploratory Study., Evelyn S. Jara-Pazmino, Bob Heere, Tom H. Regan, Christine E. Blake, Richard Southall

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 875-889, 2017. This study focuses on the coaches’ perspective of the organizational socialization process of new international student-athletes. After analyzing the information of 10 in-depth interviews with experienced NCAA Division I coaches, this exploratory study aided the researchers to identify socialization tactics being used to successfully integrate international student-athletes entering USA college teams. ISAs come from different cultures, and pending on their home nation culture they might be challenged in their ability to socialize within their new surroundings. Results indicate that the cultural distance between team culture and ISA’s culture affects the effectiveness of …

Cultural Values And Gender Equity On National Olympic Committee Boards, Na Young Ahn, George B. Cunningham

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 857-874, 2017. Women are under-represented in leadership positions throughout sport, and researchers have largely explored organizational, group, and individual antecedents of this phenomenon. The purpose of the current study was to expand on this understanding by investigating the influence of a country’s cultural values on the representation of women on National Olympic Committees. Drawing from Hofstede’s cultural dimensions theory, the authors included five cultural values: power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism-collectivism, masculinity-femininity, and long-term orientation. Results indicate that women constituted only 19.7 percent of the positions on the boards. Regression analysis, controlling for size of …

“I Will Change The World”: The Intersection Of Social Change And Male College Athletes’ Leadership Perspectives, Rhema D. Fuller, C. Keith Harrison, S. Malia Lawrence, Jeff Eyanson, Danielle Mccardle

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(6): 845-856, 2017. Historically, men have been characterized as task-oriented leaders who are motivated by desires for autonomy, wealth, and power (17, 33). However, these “masculine” views of leadership might not accurately capture the leadership motivations of Millennial males as the views were developed in previous generations (4). Given the commitment of many Millennials towards socially responsible attitudes and behaviors (18, 25), we utilized a qualitative research design to examine the influence of social change on the leadership motivations of Millennial male intercollegiate athletes. In doing so, we found participants were motivated to lead in …
