Self-reported height and weight, if accurate, provide a simple and economical method to track changes in body weight over time. Literature suggests adults tend to under-report their own weight and that the gap between self-reported weight and actual weight increases with obesity. This study investigates the extent of discrepancy in self-reported height, weight, and subsequent Body Mass Index (BMI) versus actual measurements in young adults. Physically measured and self-reported height and weight were taken from 1562 students. Male students marginally overestimated height, while females were closer to target. Males, on average, closely self-reported weight. Self-reported anthropometrics remained statistically correlated to …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Objective: This study sought to determine the association between social support and stigma experienced by HIV-positive patients and presence of subclinical cardiovascular disease. Methods: We implemented a cross sectional study in 67 HIV-positive patients and 52 controls from a community health care center in central India. The participants underwent an in-depth survey and a clinical and laboratory assessment of cardiovascular risk. Carotid-intimal thickness (CIMT) was used as a marker of subclinical cardiovascular disease.

Results: On comparing the HIV and age and sex-matched control population, HIV patients had lower body weight (P=<0.001), and lower systolic blood pressures (P = 0.002). Despite the lack of higher cardiac risk factor prevalence and lower lipid abnormalities, HIV patients had higher right, left and average CIMT values than controls (P < 0.001 for all). HIV patients also showed higher prevalence of abnormal CIMT (! 0.9 mm) than controls (32% vs. 0%, P < 0.001). HIV patients with increased CIMT (n = 37) in comparison with those with normal CIMT (n = 30) were more frequently males (P = 0.023), had higher systolic blood pressures (P = 0.002), lower CD4 counts (P = 0.033) and experienced higher enacted stigma (P = 0.044). On multivariable stepwise logistic regression, systolic blood pressure (odds ratio:1.06, P = 0.002) and stigma score > 25th percentile value (odds ratio:3.84, P = 0.037) were …

Organic Versus Conventional Cropping Sustainability: A Comparative System Analysis, Tiffany L. Fess, Vagner Benedito Jan 2018

Organic Versus Conventional Cropping Sustainability: A Comparative System Analysis, Tiffany L. Fess, Vagner Benedito

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We are at a pivotal time in human history, as the agricultural sector undergoes consolidation coupled with increasing energy costs in the context of declining resource availability. Although organic systems are often thought of as more sustainable than conventional operations, the lack of concise and widely accepted means to measure sustainability makes coming to an agreement on this issue quite challenging. However, an accurate assessment of sustainability can be reached by dissecting the scientific underpinnings of opposing production practices and crop output between cropping systems. The purpose of this review is to provide an in-depth and comprehensive evaluation of modern …

Characterization Of Kndy Neuronal Activity In Gilts: Distribution And Effect Of A Progestin, Ashley Nicollette Lindo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Puberty is a process that incorporates a large array of both external factors and internal signals. The endocrinology of puberty has been studied in a number of mammalian species and typically depends upon an increase in hypothalamic secretion of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). Neural inputs regulating GnRH secretion during the pubertal process are not completely understood. In the past decade, attention has focused on the role for a particular set of neurons located in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus. They have been named KNDy neurons because they coexpress kisspeptin, neurokinin B (NKB) and dynorphin and have been shown …

Machine Learning Approaches To Human Body Shape Analysis, Marco Piccirilli Jan 2018

Machine Learning Approaches To Human Body Shape Analysis, Marco Piccirilli

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Soft biometrics, biomedical sciences, and many other fields of study pay particular attention to the study of the geometric description of the human body, and its variations. Although multiple contributions, the interest is particularly high given the non-rigid nature of the human body, capable of assuming different poses, and numerous shapes due to variable body composition. Unfortunately, a well-known costly requirement in data-driven machine learning, and particularly in the human-based analysis, is the availability of data, in the form of geometric information (body measurements) with related vision information (natural images, 3D mesh, etc.). We introduce a computer graphics framework able …
