Computational Analysis Of Single Drops And Sprays For Spray Cooling Applications, Murat Dinc
Computational Analysis Of Single Drops And Sprays For Spray Cooling Applications, Murat Dinc
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Spray cooling is a key technology in the thermal management of the next generation electronic, aircraft and spacecraft systems. There have been relatively fewer computational studies of spray cooling because simulating all the detailed physics and dynamics of a spray consisting of millions of drops per second is computationally very expensive.;In this study, computational approaches have been used to analyze single drops and sprays for spray cooling applications. The commercially available Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code ANSYS Fluent (versions 14, 14.5, 15) has been used to perform single drop and spray simulations on two desktop workstations and the High Performance …
What Elite Men's Collegiate Tennis Coaches Look For In Recruits And How They Assess Preferred Player Characteristics, Brandyn H. Fisher
What Elite Men's Collegiate Tennis Coaches Look For In Recruits And How They Assess Preferred Player Characteristics, Brandyn H. Fisher
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Understanding what characteristics college tennis coaches look for, and how they evaluate these skills may provide beneficial information related to the recruiting process at the collegiate level. Currently, limited research exists concerning how college tennis coaches evaluate a recruit's intangible characteristics and what specific characteristics they look for. Some authors have suggested that coaches highly value intangible characteristics, such as character and leadership ability, and that these skills are believed to be necessary for success at the collegiate level (Flett, Paule, & Schneider, 2010). However, little is known about the exact processes coaches use to evaluate intangible skills, nor which …
Lead Exposure Of Obligate Avian Scavengers In Eastern North America, Shannon Behmke
Lead Exposure Of Obligate Avian Scavengers In Eastern North America, Shannon Behmke
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Lead is a toxic element within the body of living organisms. Lead poisoning cases still occur in both humans and wildlife on a regular basis in the United States. Although the harmful effects of lead within the body are well known, such as decreased IQ in children, increased renal dysfunction, hypertension, anemia, and other morbid and mortal consequences in humans and wildlife, lead continues to be used in anthropogenic activities today. Through the use of lead in ammunition and fishing sinkers, and its presence in coal-fired power plant and other industrial emissions, lead is dispersed throughout modern human and natural …
Advances In Mems Imu Cluster Technology For Small Satellite Applications, Drew E. Bittner
Advances In Mems Imu Cluster Technology For Small Satellite Applications, Drew E. Bittner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In recent years, there has been increased interest in Micro-Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) due to their relatively small volumetric footprint and low-cost. Although this advantage far outweighs the volumetric footprint and cost of traditional high-performance IMUs, MEMS technology has yet to match the performance of such devices. In spite of this, it has been shown in theory that a cluster of MEMS IMUs may signicantly improve the performance over a single MEMS IMU. To further develop this theory, two prototype boards have been designed and constructed that include 16 MEMS accelerometers and gyroscopes af- xed to …

Use Of Protein Immobilization To Measure Cytochrome P450 Conduction And Metabolism Kinetics, Christopher D. Bostick
Use Of Protein Immobilization To Measure Cytochrome P450 Conduction And Metabolism Kinetics, Christopher D. Bostick
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cytochrome P450s (P450s) are a large family (>11,000) of heme thiolated proteins that are responsible for ~ 75% of the metabolism of pharmaceuticals on the market. Understanding P450 mediated metabolism is crucial for accurate in vitro predictions of drug metabolism. P450 protein-protein interactions have been shown to alter enzyme catalytic activity. Furthermore, these interactions are isoform specific, and can elicit activation, inhibition, or no effect on enzymatic activity. Studies show these effects are also dependent on the protein binding partner cytochrome P450 reductase (CPR), and the order of protein addition to purified reconstituted enzyme systems. In the current work, …
Attenuation Of Spatial Memory Impairment In A Tau Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease With Riluzole, Daniel S. Weitzner
Attenuation Of Spatial Memory Impairment In A Tau Mouse Model Of Alzheimer's Disease With Riluzole, Daniel S. Weitzner
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Individuals at risk for developing Alzheimer's disease (AD) often demonstrate hyperactivity in areas of the memory network, such as the hippocampus, prior to AD diagnosis. Evidence suggests that this hyperactivity might be a contributing factor to the development of AD. Tau, a protein responsible for binding and maintaining microtubules, has been implicated as a factor in hyperactivity, potentially through its alterations in glutamate signaling. Glutamate, the primary excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, is essential for learning and memory. However, excess glutamate that accumulates in the synapse can lead to neuron loss and eventual behavioral impairments. Recently, our lab …
External Hyperlinking Practices In Print-Based And Online-Native News Sites, Sarah K. Wisniewski
External Hyperlinking Practices In Print-Based And Online-Native News Sites, Sarah K. Wisniewski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This paper describes the differences in the use of external hyperlinks between print-based and online-native news sites. External hyperlinks are links that direct the user to a page outside the original domain, such as the Huffington Post including a link to Wikipedia. A subcategorization of online-native sites into three distinct waves based on launch dates and corresponding to recent transitions in communications technology is proposed. A quantitative content analysis of hyperlinks embedded in the text of articles from print-based, second-wave, and third-wave news sites in 2005, 2010, and 2014 suggests that print-based and online-native news sites do use external hyperlinks …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Decreasing truck fuel usage and climate change gas production is of national and global importance. This study focuses on large, heavy-duty on-road tractor trailer combinations because of their impact in terms of fuel consumption levels, emissions, and their dominance in freight transportation in the United States, which offers substantial potential to improve efficiency of the transportation sector and reduce emissions. The US Department of Energy completed a study of this topic in 2009, and the EPA and NHTSA are both engaged in regulating truck efficiency. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that more than 50 percent of the total diesel …
Constraints On The Pressure-Temperature Path For Belt-Purcell Supergroup Metapelites From Snow Peak, Northern Idaho, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson
Constraints On The Pressure-Temperature Path For Belt-Purcell Supergroup Metapelites From Snow Peak, Northern Idaho, Sarah Elizabeth Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Snow Peak area in northern Idaho experienced two distinct metamorphic episodes, M1 and M2. Garnets, especially those that experienced both episodes, are strongly zoned. The assemblages observed in metapelites from garnet to staurolite/kyanite zones were compared to computer generated assemblages calculated using Theriak-Domino (deCapitani and Petrakakis, 2010). The comparison and analysis of the assemblages, garnet zoning, and modal contours provides constraints on the path the rocks must have followed between metamorphic events called M1 and M2. The most useful constraints on the proposed P-T path are provided by comparing the content of Ca in garnet and the observed assemblage …
Nonlinear Simultaneous Equations For Individual-Tree Diameter Growth And Mortality Model Of Natural Mongolian Oak Forests In Northeast China, Wu Ma, Xiangdong Lei
Nonlinear Simultaneous Equations For Individual-Tree Diameter Growth And Mortality Model Of Natural Mongolian Oak Forests In Northeast China, Wu Ma, Xiangdong Lei
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
A nonlinear equation system for individual tree diameter growth and mortality of natural Mongolian oak forests was developed based on 13,360 observations from 195 permanent sample plots in Northeast China. Weighted regression was used in a distance-independent diameter growth equation for dealing with heterocedasticity. Since diameter growth and mortality models have common predictors including the diameter at breast height (DBH), stand basal area (BA), basal-area-in-larger trees (BAL), and site index (SI), parameters were estimated using nonlinear three-stage least squares (N3SLS) and seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) which accounts for correlations of errors across models. The system equation provided better projection than …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The extremely acidic brine lakes of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia are home to some of the most biologically challenging waters on Earth. In this study, we employed metagenomic shotgun sequencing to generate a microbial profile of the depositional environment associated with the sulfur-rich sediments of one such lake. Of the 1.5 M high-quality reads generated, 0.25 M were mapped to protein features, which in turn provide new insights into the metabolic function of this community. In particular, 45 diverse genes associated with sulfur metabolism were identified, the majority of which were linked to either the conversion of sulfate …
In Defense Of Moral Evidentialism, Sharon Ryan
In Defense Of Moral Evidentialism, Sharon Ryan
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper is a defense of moral evidentialism, the view that we have a moral obligation to form the doxastic attitude that is best supported by our evidence. I will argue that two popular arguments against moral evidentialism are weak. I will also argue that our commitments to the moral evaluation of actions require us to take doxastic obligations seriously.

Classification Of C3 And C4 Vegetation Types Using Modis And Etm+ Blended High Spatio-Temporal Resolution Data, Xiaolong Liu, Yanchen Bo, Jian Zhang, Yaqian He
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The distribution of C3 and C4 vegetation plays an important role in the global carbon cycle and climate change. Knowledge of the distribution of C3 and C4 vegetation at a high spatial resolution over local or regional scales helps us to understand their ecological functions and climate dependencies. In this study, we classified C3 and C4 vegetation at a high resolution for spatially heterogeneous landscapes. First, we generated a high spatial and temporal land surface reflectance dataset by blending MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and ETM+ (Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus) data. The blended data exhibited a high correlation (R2 …
Stability Of Exact Force-Free Electrodynamic Solutions And Scattering From Spacetime Curvature, Fan Zhang, Sean T. Mcwilliams, Harald P. Pfeiffer
Stability Of Exact Force-Free Electrodynamic Solutions And Scattering From Spacetime Curvature, Fan Zhang, Sean T. Mcwilliams, Harald P. Pfeiffer
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Recently, a family of exact force-free electrodynamic (FFE) solutions was given by Brennan, Gralla and Jacobson, which generalizes earlier solutions by Michel, Menon and Dermer, and other authors. These solutions have been proposed as useful models for describing the outer magnetosphere of conducting stars. As with any exact analytical solution that aspires to describe actual physical systems, it is vitally important that the solution possess the necessary stability. In this paper, we show via fully nonlinear numerical simulations that the aforementioned FFE solutions, despite being highly special in their properties, are nonetheless stable under small perturbations. Through this study, we …

This thesis addresses several aspects of using static code analysis tools for detection of security vulnerabilities and faults within source code. First, the performance of three widely used static code analysis tools with respect to detection of security vulnerabilities is evaluated. This is done with the help of a large benchmarking suite designed to test static code analysis tools' performance regarding security vulnerabilities. The performance of the three tools is also evaluated using three open source software projects with known security vulnerabilities. The main results of the first part of this thesis showed that the three evaluated tools do not …
Prediction Of Discretization Error Using The Error Transport Equation, Don Roscoe Parsons Iii
Prediction Of Discretization Error Using The Error Transport Equation, Don Roscoe Parsons Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since its conception, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has had a role to play in both the industrial and the academic realm. Due to the availability of relatively cheap computer resources, CFD is now playing an increasingly critical role in the industry compared to experiments. It is also becoming increasingly important for the CFD analyst to have an in-depth understanding of the error inherently present in numeric and mathematical models. At a minimum, CFD simulation results should be accompanied by some analysis of the error including some type of grid convergence study and an estimation of the corresponding numerical uncertainty.;Error estimation …

How To Mitigate Coal Mine Bumps Through Understanding The Violent Failure Of Coal Specimens, Gamal Rashed
How To Mitigate Coal Mine Bumps Through Understanding The Violent Failure Of Coal Specimens, Gamal Rashed
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Coal mine bumps have presented serious mining problems for many years. These sudden violent failures around underground mine openings have compromised safety, ventilation and access to mine workings. There is general agreement among researchers that both geologic and poor/inappropriate mining conditions that create high stresses in the pillar are the main causative factors for coal bumps.;The main objective of this research is to understand bump mechanisms in laboratory settings through examining the violent failure of coal specimens and to test three hypotheses to mitigate that violent failure. Also, man-made concrete specimens were prepared and tested to simulate failures in underground …

Fundamental Study Of Nano-Scale Adhesion And Friction Properties Of Graphene In Ambient Air And Liquid Environments, Sai Suvineeth Ramayanam
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The aim of this study is to understand the fundamental tribological interactions of model contacts developed between a 'single' asperity silicon tip and a few layer graphene surface in ambient air, ionic liquid, and lubricating oil environments. The motivation to investigate such fundamental interactions stems from the need to gain an understanding of the tribological properties, morphology and defects of few layer graphene with respect to different synthesis methods including both bottom-up and top-down approaches. In particular, the surface properties of atomically thin sheets of graphene synthesized by three methods; (i) liquid phase exfoliation of graphene, (ii) chemical reduction of …
Synthesis, Characterization And Photocatalytic Activity Of Au-Zno Heterostructures, Oshadha Kanchana Ranasingha
Synthesis, Characterization And Photocatalytic Activity Of Au-Zno Heterostructures, Oshadha Kanchana Ranasingha
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Heterostructures of semiconductor metal oxides and metals have been studied extensively due to the synergistic photocatalytic activity they display. Gold-Zinc oxide (Au-ZnO) heterostructured photocatalysts are one of the most widely studied photocatalysts due to the high photocatalytic activity of ZnO and the ability of Au to transfer photoexcited electrons away from ZnO, which leads to enhanced carrier separation and improved catalytic activity. Au heterostructuring is also known to alter the electronic structure of ZnO leading to better photochemical band alignment and a decreased work function which both contribute to enhanced catalytic activity. The use of Au to form heterostructures with …
Quantitative Assessment Of The Discrimination Potential Of Class And Randomly Acquired Characteristics For Crime Scene Quality Shoeprints, Nicole Richetelli
Quantitative Assessment Of The Discrimination Potential Of Class And Randomly Acquired Characteristics For Crime Scene Quality Shoeprints, Nicole Richetelli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Footwear evidence has tremendous forensic value; it can focus a criminal investigation, link suspects to scenes, help reconstruct a series of events, or otherwise provide information vital to the successful resolution of a case. When considering the specific utility of a linkage, the strength of the connection between the source footwear and an impression left at the scene of a crime varies with the known rarity of the shoeprint itself, which is a function of the class characteristics, as well as the complexity, clarity, and quality of randomly acquired characteristics (RACs) available for analysis. To help elucidate the discrimination potential …
What Shadows We Pursue: Death, Democracy, And Disunion In Antebellum America, Joseph M. Rizzo
What Shadows We Pursue: Death, Democracy, And Disunion In Antebellum America, Joseph M. Rizzo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation examines the ways Americans registered concerns about antebellum democratic political culture through their mourning of national leaders. A "eulogizing class" consisting of clergymen, politicians, lawyers, and educators was especially prominent in shaping how contemporaries remembered the dead. As a class, the eulogists were conflicted about democracy and partisanship, and conveyed their concerns through the potentially demagogic form of the eulogy---the practice of glorifying the "great man." Through an examination of eulogies, sermons, and newspaper editorials after the deaths of William Henry Harrison, Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, John Calhoun, Henry Clay, and Daniel Webster, this dissertation reveals the …

Against The Thalassocracy: Sacred Geography, Nationhood And Perennial Traditionalism In Alexander Dugin's Neo-Eurasianist Philosophy, Jonathan Rushbrook
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis discusses the ideological makeup of the Russian right wing philosopher Alexander Dugin's and his conceptualization of race and nation in his Neo-Eurasianist imperial project. Tracing Dugin's ideological influences from early Eurasianism, the European New Right and esoteric religious beliefs such as Perennial Traditionalism, the thesis then goes on to place Dugin's body of thought within a larger debate on defining fascism and whether Dugin can be considered a fascist. Ultimately this thesis contests some scholars' interpretations of Dugin's worldview as a fundamentally ethnocentric or even racist Russian nationalism. Rather, by examining Dugin's writings on nation through an ethno-symbolist …

Use Of Wireless, Ad-Hoc Networks For Proximity Warning And Collision Avoidance In Surface Mines, Venkata Raghava Siva Naga Shashank Sabniveesu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Despite the record of progress achieved in the United States with respect to reducing fatal and non-fatal injuries in surface mines, both the number and severity of these injuries remain unacceptable. A large fraction of these injuries in surface mines are caused by collisions involving large haulage equipment such as trucks, dozers, and front-end loaders. There are two main contributing factors for these collisions: (i) the massive size of these vehicles, which causes several blind spots surrounding the vehicle for the driver, and (ii) the sheer momentum of these vehicles, which makes it hard to maneuver these vehicles and often …

The Effect Of Direct Instruction On Spanish Language Acquisition In A Preschool Free-Play Environment: A Single-Case Design, Lucy Rose Scotti
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The predicted increase in Spanish speakers within the United States brings to light a new direction for preschool curricula. There are multiple, on-going arguments about the best time for children to learn a second language and what role critical periods for brain development play in second language acquisition. Although there are individual differences in development, the current study demonstrates that children can learn Spanish vocabulary words with an average of 30 minutes of instruction per week. Using a combination of direct instruction with developmentally appropriate practices, hands-on, and engaging activities, the teaching of Spanish vocabulary, themed and age appropriate for …
