Hackerspaces: A Case Study In The Creation And Management Of A Common Pool Resource, Michael R. Williams, Joshua C. Hall Jan 2015

Hackerspaces: A Case Study In The Creation And Management Of A Common Pool Resource, Michael R. Williams, Joshua C. Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Hackerspaces are community-operated physical places where individuals get together to build things. While the organization itself is private, the ‘space’ that is created for individuals to work has elements of a common pool resource (CPR). Previous literature finds technology to be important in effective CPR management. Through an ethnographic study of a hackerspace, we show how technology is crucial for management of the ‘space’. In addition, we highlight how technology is used in hackerspaces to satisfy three of Elinor Ostrom’s design principles for stable CPR management.

Statistical Analysis Of The Geomagnetic Response To Different Solar Wind Drivers And The Dependence On Storm Intensity, R. M. Katus, M. W. Liemohn, E. L. Ionides, R. Ilie, D. Welling, L. K. Sarno-Smith

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Geomagnetic storms start with activity on the Sun that causes propagation of magnetized plasma structures in the solar wind. The type of solar activity is used to classify the plasma structures as being either interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) or corotating interaction region (CIR) driven. The ICME‐driven events are further classified as either magnetic cloud (MC) driven or sheath (SH) driven by the geoeffective structure responsible for the peak of the storm. The geoeffective solar wind flow then interacts with the magnetosphere producing a disturbance in near‐Earth space. It is commonly believed that a SH‐driven event behaves more like a …

Fan-Extensions In Fragile Matroids, Carolyn Chun, Deborah Chun, Dillon Mayhew, Stefan H. M. Van Zwam Jan 2015

Fan-Extensions In Fragile Matroids, Carolyn Chun, Deborah Chun, Dillon Mayhew, Stefan H. M. Van Zwam

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

If $\mathcal{S}$ is a set of matroids, then the matroid $M$ is $\mathcal{S}$-fragile if, for every element $e\in E(M)$, either $M\backslash e$ or $M/e$ has no minor isomorphic to a member of $\mathcal{S}$. Excluded-minor characterizations often depend, implicitly or explicitly, on understanding classes of fragile matroids. In certain cases, when $\mathcal{M}$ is a minor-closed class of $\mathcal{S}$-fragile matroids, and $N\in \mathcal{M}$, the only members of $\mathcal{M}$ that contain $N$ as a minor are obtained from $N$ by increasing the length of fans. We prove that if this is the case, then we can certify it with a finite case-analysis. The …

Statistical Analysis Of Storm-Time Near-Earth Current Systems, M W. Liemohn, R M. Katus, R Ilie Jan 2015

Statistical Analysis Of Storm-Time Near-Earth Current Systems, M W. Liemohn, R M. Katus, R Ilie

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Currents from the Hot Electron and Ion Drift Integrator (HEIDI) inner magnetospheric model results for all of the 90 intense storms (disturbance storm-time (Dst) minimum < −100 nT) from solar cycle 23 (1996–2005) are calculated, presented, and analyzed. We have categorized these currents into the various systems that exist in near-Earth space, specifically the eastward and westward symmetric ring current, the partial ring current, the banana current, and the tail current. The current results from each run set are combined by a normalized superposed epoch analysis technique that scales the timeline of each phase of each storm before summing the results. It is found that there is a systematic ordering to the current systems, with the asymmetric current systems peaking during storm main phase (tail current rising first, then the banana current, followed by the partial ring current) and the symmetric current systems peaking during the early recovery phase (westward and eastward symmetric ring current having simultaneous maxima). The median and mean peak amplitudes for the current systems ranged from 1 to 3 MA, depending on the setup configuration used in HEIDI, except for the eastward symmetric ring current, for which the mean never exceeded 0.3 MA for any HEIDI setup. The self-consistent electric field description in HEIDI yielded larger tail and banana currents than the Volland–Stern electric field, while the partial and symmetric ring currents had similar peak values between the two applied electric field models.

Mopra Co Observations Of The Bubble H Ii Region Rcw 120, L. D. Anderson, L. Deharveng, A. Zavagno, P. Tremblin, V. Lowe, M. R. Cunningham, P. Jones, A. M. Mullins, M. P. Redman Jan 2015

Mopra Co Observations Of The Bubble H Ii Region Rcw 120, L. D. Anderson, L. Deharveng, A. Zavagno, P. Tremblin, V. Lowe, M. R. Cunningham, P. Jones, A. M. Mullins, M. P. Redman

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

We use the Mopra radio telescope to test for expansion of the molecular gas associated with the bubble H II region RCW 120. A ring, or bubble, morphology is common for Galactic H II regions, but the three-dimensional geometry of such objects is still unclear. Detected near- and far-side expansion of the associated molecular material would be consistent with a three-dimensional spherical object. We map the J = 1 → 0 transitions of 12CO, 13CO, C18O, and C17O, and detect emission from all isotopologues. We do not detect the 00 → 1–1E masing lines of CH3OH at 108.8939 GHz. The …

Economic Freedom Studies At The State Level: A Survey, Joshua C. Hall, Dean B. Stansel, Danko Tarabar Jan 2015

Economic Freedom Studies At The State Level: A Survey, Joshua C. Hall, Dean B. Stansel, Danko Tarabar

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This chapter synthesizes and elaborates on much of the existing research using the Economic Freedom of North America (EFNA) index. Our consensus after reading this literature is that the EFNA index, similarly to the Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) index, is largely positively related with “good” outcomes, and negatively related with “bad” ones, although there are a few exceptions. The literature using the EFNA is growing rapidly and can provide a useful guide towards future policy changes and economic outcomes.

This comment highlights several important questions in two major areas that were inspired by reading The Fiscal Case Against Statehood. The first major area concerns the sociology of business disciplines, accounting in particular, with respect to interdisciplinary scholarship. Questions in the second major area focus on methodological questions surrounding the fiscal effects of statehood.

Was Adam Smith Right About Religious Competition?, Peter J. Boettke, Joshua C. Hall, Kathleen M. Sheehan Jan 2015

Was Adam Smith Right About Religious Competition?, Peter J. Boettke, Joshua C. Hall, Kathleen M. Sheehan

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Adam Smith famously argued that increased competition in religion would result in more religious tolerance and that the benefits of competition in the marketplace would also be seen in religious instruction when many religious sects are tolerated. We use a cross-section of a maximum of 167 countries to explore whether increased religious competition results in less governmental regulation of religion and less governmental favoritism of religion. Our measure of religious regulation and favoritism comes from the Association of Religion Data Archives. Our empirical analysis also explores the influence of economic and political factors, including the size of the economy, openness …

The WISE Catalog of Galactic H ii Regions contains ~2000 H ii region candidates lacking ionized gas spectroscopic observations. All candidates have the characteristic H ii region mid-infrared morphology of WISE 12 emission surrounding 22 emission, and additionally have detected radio continuum emission. We here report Green Bank Telescope hydrogen radio recombination line and radio continuum detections in the X-band (9 GHz; 3 cm) of 302 WISE H ii region candidates (out of 324 targets observed) in the zone , Here we extend the sky coverage of our H ii region Discovery Survey, which now contains nearly 800 H ii …

Fellows Address: Are Industry Clusters And Diversity Strange Bedfellows?, Randall Jackson Jan 2015

Fellows Address: Are Industry Clusters And Diversity Strange Bedfellows?, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In this address, I review industry clustering and diversification strategies to compare and contrast their underlying foundations. The lack of consensus choice of one or the other for regional economic development strategies along with the recognition that in the dynamic process of development these two processes are related leads me to conclude that clusters and diversity need not be such strange bedfellows after all, and that a rational approach to economic development can leverage the strengths of each and offset weaknesses. I follow this discussion by introducing a cluster assessment diversification strategy (CADS) apparatus that can be used to measure …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

To understand the nature of supernovae and neutron star (NS) formation, as well as binary stellar evolution and their interactions, it is important to probe the distribution of NS masses. Until now, all double NS (DNS) systems have been measured as having a mass ratio close to unity (q ≥ 0.91). Here, we report the measurement of the individual masses of the 4.07-day binary pulsar J0453+1559 from measurements of the rate of advance of periastron and Shapiro delay: the mass of the pulsar is Mp = 1.559 ± 0.005 M⊙ and that of its companion is M⊙; q = 0.75. …

Financial Competence, Overconfidence, And Trusting Investments: Results From An Experiment, Bryan C. Mccannon, Colleen Tokar Asaad, Mark Wilson Jan 2015

Financial Competence, Overconfidence, And Trusting Investments: Results From An Experiment, Bryan C. Mccannon, Colleen Tokar Asaad, Mark Wilson

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Financial transactions sometimes occur in an environment where third-party enforcement is lacking. Behavioral explanations typically allude to the social preferences, where an individual’s utility is directly affected by another’s outcome, as the driver of the trusting investments and reciprocal returns. We hypothesize that, in part, these decisions are determined by an individual’s financial literacy. Experimental evidence is coupled with an innovative financial literacy assessment, which measures general competence, numeracy skills, and overconfidence in one’s knowledge. Results indicate that overconfidence is a significant determinant of behavior. Specifically, overconfident individuals make larger contributions in the investment game. We also document that there …

Genetic Risks To Nicotine Dependence Predict Negative Mood And Affect In Current Non-Smokers, Xiangning Chen, Steven H. Aggen, Jingchun Chen, Lingxi Li, Kenneth S. Kendler, Melissa Blank, Thomas Eissenberg Jan 2015

Genetic Risks To Nicotine Dependence Predict Negative Mood And Affect In Current Non-Smokers, Xiangning Chen, Steven H. Aggen, Jingchun Chen, Lingxi Li, Kenneth S. Kendler, Melissa Blank, Thomas Eissenberg

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Nicotine is the psychoactive agent involved in nicotine dependence. However, nicotine as a drug and its effects on human psychology are largely under-investigated in genetic studies. In this study, we recruited 208 current non-smokers to evaluate the effect of nicotine and its relationship to genetic risks to nicotine dependence. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, as well as measurement invariance testing, were conducted to evaluate the latent factor structures of the POMS, PANAS and DEN questionnaires across 3 nicotine doses. Structural models were used to examine the effects of nicotine and their relationship to genetic risks of nicotine dependence. We found …

Soil Biochemical Properties In Brown And Gray Mine Soils With And Without Hydroseeding, C Thomas, A Sexstone, J Skousen Jan 2015

Soil Biochemical Properties In Brown And Gray Mine Soils With And Without Hydroseeding, C Thomas, A Sexstone, J Skousen

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Surface coal mining in the eastern USA disturbs hundreds of hectares of land every year and removes valuable and ecologically diverse eastern deciduous forests. Reclamation involves restoring the landscape to approximate original contour, replacing the topsoil, and revegetating the site with trees and herbaceous species to a designated post-mining land use. Re-establishing an ecosystem of ecological and economic value as well as restoring soil quality on disturbed sites are the goals of land reclamation, and microbial properties of mine soils can be indicators of restoration success. Reforestation plots were constructed in 2007 using weathered brown sandstone or unweathered gray sandstone …

Nearby Clumpy, Gas Rich, Star-Forming Galaxies: Local Analogs Of High-Redshift Clumpy Galaxies, C. A. Garland, D. J. Pisano, M.-M. Mac Low, K. Kreckel, K. Rabidoux, R. Guzmán

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) have enhanced star formation rates (SFRs) and compact morphologies. We combine Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with H i data of 29 LCBGs at redshift z ~ 0 to understand their nature. We find that local LCBGs have high atomic gas fractions (~50%) and SFRs per stellar mass consistent with some high-redshift star-forming galaxies (SFGs). Many local LCBGs also have clumpy morphologies, with clumps distributed across their disks. Although rare, these galaxies appear to be similar to the clumpy SFGs commonly observed at z ~ 1–3. Local LCBGs separate into three groups: (1) interacting galaxies …

Correcting For Interstellar Scattering Delay In High-Precision Pulsar Timing: Simulation Results, Nipuni Palliyaguru, Daniel Stinebring, Maura Mclaughlin, Paul Demorest, Glenn Jones

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Light travel time changes due to gravitational waves (GWs) may be detected within the next decade through precision timing of millisecond pulsars. Removal of frequency-dependent interstellar medium (ISM) delays due to dispersion and scattering is a key issue in the detection process. Current timing algorithms routinely correct pulse times of arrival (TOAs) for time-variable delays due to cold plasma dispersion. However, none of the major pulsar timing groups correct for delays due to scattering from multi-path propagation in the ISM. Scattering introduces a frequency-dependent phase change in the signal that results in pulse broadening and arrival time delays. Any method …

Epistemic Modal Disagreement, Jonah Katz Jan 2015

Epistemic Modal Disagreement, Jonah Katz

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

At the center of the debate between contextualist versus relativist semantics for epistemic modal claims is an empirical question about when competent subjects judge the presence of epistemic modal disagreement. John MacFarlane’s relativist claims that we judge there to be epistemic modal disagreement across the widest range of cases. We wish to dispute the robustness of his data with the results of two studies. Our primary conclusion is that the actual disagreement data is not consistent with relativist predictions, and so, that the primary motivation for relativism disappears. Our study differs from a related study by Knobe and Yalcin (2014) …

An Attentional Effect Of Musical Metrical Structure, Jonah Katz Jan 2015

An Attentional Effect Of Musical Metrical Structure, Jonah Katz

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Theories of metrical structure postulate the existence of several degrees of beat strength. While previous work has clearly established that humans are sensitive to the distinction between strong beats and weak ones, there is little evidence for a more fine grained distinction between intermediate levels. Here, we present experimental data showing that attention can be allocated to an intermediate level of beat strength. Comparing the effects of short exposures to 6/8 and 3/4 metrical structures on a tone detection task, we observe that subjects respond differently to beats of intermediate strength than to weak beats.

Statistical Storm Time Examination Of Mlt-Dependent Plasmapause Location Derived From Image Euv, R. M. Katus, D. L. Gallagher, M. W. Liemohn, A. M. Keesee, L. K. Sarno-Smith

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The location of the outer edge of the plasmasphere (the plasmapause) as a function of geomagnetic storm time is identified and investigated statistically in regard to the solar wind driver. Imager for Magnetopause‐to‐Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) data are used to create an automated method that locates and extracts the plasmapause. The plasmapause extraction technique searches a set range of possible plasmasphere densities for a maximum gradient. The magnetic local time (MLT)‐dependent plasmapause results are compared to manual extraction results. The plasmapause results from 39 intense storms are examined along a normalized epoch storm timeline to determine the …

Comparing Different Fault Identification Algorithms In Distributed Power System, Salim Alkaabi Jan 2015

Comparing Different Fault Identification Algorithms In Distributed Power System, Salim Alkaabi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A power system is a huge complex system that delivers the electrical power from the generation units to the consumers. As the demand for electrical power increases, distributed power generation was introduced to the power system. Faults may occur in the power system at any time in different locations. These faults cause a huge damage to the system as they might lead to full failure of the power system. Using distributed generation in the power system made it even harder to identify the location of the faults in the system.;The main objective of this work is to test the different …

Relating Urban Forests And Urban Tourism: Exploring People's Perceptions, Preferences And Movement In Washington Dc, Rogelio T. Andrada Ii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Exploring the connection between urban forests and urban tourism has not been given much attention in recent investigative efforts. This study is designed to describe, explore and explain the specific elements where these two fields converge. There is no better vehicle to do this than by eliciting data from people, who are collectively, the beneficiaries and clientele of these entities. Therefore, a face-to-face survey, spanning one year, collected data on people's perception, preferences, movement, demographics and trip background in a popular and busy city destination: Washington DC.;Data collection yielded 1,146 completed questionnaires out of 3,210 respondents who participated which sets …
