Perceptual Integration Of Acoustic Cues To Laryngeal Contrasts In Korean Fricatives, Jonah Katz
Perceptual Integration Of Acoustic Cues To Laryngeal Contrasts In Korean Fricatives, Jonah Katz
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper provides evidence that multiple acoustic cues involving the presence of lowfrequency energy integrate in the perception of Korean coronal fricatives. This finding helps explain a surprising asymmetry between the production and perception of these fricatives found in previous studies: lower F0 onset in the following vowel leads to a response bias for plain [s] over fortis [s*], despite the fact that there is no evidence for a corresponding acoustic asymmetry in the production of [s] and [s*]. A fixed classification task using the Garner paradigm provides evidence that low F0 in a following vowel and the presence of …

Application Of Computer Vision For Roller Operation Management, Mohammad Hadi Niki Rashidi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Compaction is the last and possibly the most important phase in construction of asphalt concrete (AC) pavements. Compaction densifies the loose (AC) mat, producing a stable surface with low permeability. The process strongly affects the AC performance properties. Too much compaction may cause aggregate degradation and low air void content facilitating bleeding and rutting. On the other hand too little compaction may result in higher air void content facilitating oxidation and water permeability issues, rutting due to further densification by traffic and reduced fatigue life. Therefore, compaction is a critical issue in AC pavement construction.;The common practice for compacting a …

Findings suggest that individuals do use nutrient content claims while looking at food packaging, and that this significantly relates to their health orientation and …
The Effect Of Lower Extremity Asymmetries On Low Back And Lower Extremity Pain With Pregnancy, Erica Casto
The Effect Of Lower Extremity Asymmetries On Low Back And Lower Extremity Pain With Pregnancy, Erica Casto
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Approximately 50% of pregnant women experience low back and lower extremity pain during pregnancy, many of which continue to experience pain post-partum. It is known that many women experience changes in foot size, arch height and lower extremity alignment. However, the mechanism by which these changes are related to pain is relatively unknown, specifically in regard to asymmetric changes in alignment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess alignment during pregnancy in order to determine if asymmetries occurring in women during pregnancy are related to low back, hip, knee, and foot pain. Methods: Ten women in their third …

This study delves further and attempts to understand how coaches use this knowledge in the act of noticing. Alongside understanding the complexity of coaching this study attempts to demonstrate the individuality and diversity in …
Elucidating Mechanisms Of Neurobehavioral Dysfunction In A Rodent Model Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Aric F. Logsdon
Elucidating Mechanisms Of Neurobehavioral Dysfunction In A Rodent Model Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Aric F. Logsdon
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Neuropsychiatric symptoms and cognitive deficits are common among victims of a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and currently, there are no effective treatments to improve outcome. We first developed a clinically-relevant blast TBI model based on lung scaling parameters to elucidate mechanisms of neuronal cell death. In order to discover effective treatments to improve outcome, we had to validate our novel preclinical model of TBI. TBI is an external force that can cause damage to the neurovascular unit (NVU), which can lead to secondary effects, cell death and behavioral dysfunction. In our first study we observed that our model damaged the …
Determination Of Strain Patterns Across The Root-Stem Transition Zone In Trees, Kenneth Edward Beezley
Determination Of Strain Patterns Across The Root-Stem Transition Zone In Trees, Kenneth Edward Beezley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Trees are subjected to mechanical stressors, induced via dynamic (wind) and static (gravitational) forces, and must properly acclimate during their lifespan or face premature mortality. Resource allocation as a stress response is vital for tree survival, and can include the shedding of woody parts, adaptive growth, hormonal signaling cascades, and the initiation of energy transfer mechanisms. The strain resulting from stress intercepted by the canopy and transferred throughout the tree is of significant importance, not only for tree survival, but for the safety and well-being of the human population found in close proximity. As trees age and adapt to stressors …

In-Cylinder Diagnostics Using Feedback From Resonant Cavity Ignition Sources, James F. Hunsucker Iii
In-Cylinder Diagnostics Using Feedback From Resonant Cavity Ignition Sources, James F. Hunsucker Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Quarter-Wave Coaxial Cavity Resonator (QWCCR) Plasma Igniter is a spark ignition replacement system based on a novel technology. This system creates coronal plasma through the use of radio frequency voltage step-up. Because this device is an open loop resonant structure, it is sensitive to changes in the environment it operates in, the physical and the combustion environment. A relationship can be developed between the effects of the pressure in the combustion environment and the changes in resonance frequency experienced by the igniter. These diagnostic capabilities can be utilized to detect and alleviate misfires, incomplete fuel burns, etc. in an …
The Devonian Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine
The Devonian Period, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine
Readings and Notes
Until the 19th century, the rocks exposed throughout the provinces of Devonshire and Cornwall in southwestern England had long been considered to be Carboniferous in age because of their content of fossil plants. Closer investigation by Murchison and Sedgwick in 1836, however, showed that only the uppermost portion of these rocks contained fossil plants. Because the lower portion of the rock sequence was devoid of plant fossils, was highly deformed, and resembled the rocks of northwest Wales which they had recently studied, Murchison and Sedgwick assigned the rocks to the Cambrian System. However, local fossil collectors had submitted fossil corals …

On Gigahertz Spectral Turnovers In Pulsars, K. Rajwade, D. R. Lorimer, L. D. Anderson
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Pulsars are known to emit non-thermal radio emission that is generally a power-law function of frequency. In some cases, a turnover is seen at frequencies around 100 MHz. Kijak et al. have reported the presence of a new class of ‘Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum’ (GPS) pulsars that show spectral turnovers at frequencies around 1 GHz. We apply a model based on free–free thermal absorption to explain these turnovers in terms of surrounding material such as the dense environments found in H

The West Virginia's Valley And Ridge Physiographic Province: An Overly Simplistic Introduction, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine
Readings and Notes
Anyone who has driven across West Virginia has noticed major changes in the lay of the land. In the western portion of the State the landscape belongs to the Appalachian Plateaus Physiographic Province. But what constitutes a plateau? According to the Glossary of Geology, a plateau is a dissected (stream carved) upland underlain by horizontal strata. In the case of the Appalachian Plateau, it is a relatively flat to gently rolling surface with an average elevation of about 900 feet underlain by gently folded to flat-lying sedimentary rocks. But what is a physiographic province? Again, according to the Glossary of …
Earth's Place In Space, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine
Earth's Place In Space, John J. Renton, Thomas Repine
Readings and Notes
I've always thought that a story should start at the beginning. Since this book is the story of Earth, we will start at the beginning. According to the astronomers, in the beginning, there was no need for geology because there were no minerals or rocks; there was no Earth; there was no Sun; there were no stars or planets. According to the astronomers, there was a time when even our present universe didn't exist. In the 1920s, the Belgian astronomer Georges Lemaitre hypothesized that everything presently contained within the entire Universe was once compressed into in a sphere he called …

Social Interactions In Voting Behavior: Evidence From India, Umair Khalil, Sulagna Mookerjee, Ryan Tierney
Social Interactions In Voting Behavior: Evidence From India, Umair Khalil, Sulagna Mookerjee, Ryan Tierney
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Using the unique staggered nature of the Indian General Elections, where voting takes place in several different phases spanning several weeks, we investigate how spatial variation in electoral dynamics affects subsequent voter turnout. Exploiting quasi-random assignment of constituencies to electoral phases each election, we assess the impact of average voter turnout in a given phase, on turnout in the subsequent phase. Standard endogeneity concerns in the estimation of social interactions are dealt by employing two distinct instrumental variables: 1) constituency specific average historical turnout in elections from the pre-staggered era, 2) voter density as measured by number of voters per …

The Effect Of Recreational Gambling On Regional Health Outcomes: Evidence From Canadian Provinces, Brad R. Humphreys, John A. Nyman, Jane Ruseski
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
The relationship between gambling and health has important economic and public policy im- plications. We develop causal evidence on this relationship using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey and exploiting regional variation in access to legal gambling. Empirical models treat gambling as an endogenous regressor in explaining regional variation in health outcomes. Results from instrumental variable and bivariate probit models show recreational gambling has no or a negative impact on the probability of having certain chronic conditions and a positive impact on life satisfaction, differing from past studies that find a positive association between problem gambling and adverse health …

Detection Of Dispersed Radio Pulses: A Machine Learning Approach To Candidate Identification And Classification, Thomas Ryan Devine, Katerina Goseva-Popstojanova, Maura Mclaughlin
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Searching for extraterrestrial, transient signals in astronomical data sets is an active area of current research. However, machine learning techniques are lacking in the literature concerning single-pulse detection. This paper presents a new, two-stage approach for identifying and classifying dispersed pulse groups (DPGs) in single-pulse search output. The first stage identified DPGs and extracted features to characterize them using a new peak identification algorithm which tracks sloping tendencies around local maxima in plots of signal-to-noise ratio versus dispersion measure. The second stage used supervised machine learning to classify DPGs. We created four benchmark data sets: one unbalanced and three balanced …

What Is Near And Recent In Crime For A Homeowner? The Cases Of Denver And Seattle, Adam Nowak, Juan Tomas Sayago Gomez
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
This paper analyzes the effects of the concentration of crime on housing prices using nonparametric methods. Specifically, we use a modified local K-function in order to measure crime concentration. This technique provides us with a crime measure that is not dependent on pre-defined boundaries. Results from this analysis suggest a decrease in housing prices of two percent to seven percent for crimes in the past six months that occur within a quarter of a mile of the house.

Pathogen identification and microbial source tracking (MST) to identify sources of fecal pollution improve evaluation of water quality. They contribute to improved assessment of human health risks and remediation of pollution sources. An MST microarray was used to simultaneously detect genes for multiple pathogens and indicators of fecal pollution in freshwater, marine water, sewage-contaminated freshwater and marine water, and treated wastewater. Dead-end ultrafiltration (DEUF) was used to concentrate organisms from water samples, yielding a recovery efficiency of >95% for Escherichia coli and human polyomavirus. Whole-genome amplification (WGA) increased gene copies from ultrafiltered samples and increased the sensitivity of the microarray. …

Examining The Effects Of Testwiseness In Conceptual Physics Evaluations, Seth Devore, John Stewart, Gay Stewart
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Testwiseness is defined as the set of cognitive strategies used by a student that is intended to improve his or her score on a test regardless of the test’s subject matter. Questions with elements that may be affected by testwiseness are common in physics assessments, even in those which have been extensively validated and widely used as evaluation tools in physics education research. The potential effect of several elements of testwiseness were analyzed for questions in the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) and Conceptual Survey on Electricity and Magnetism that contain distractors that are predicted to be influenced by testwiseness. This …
An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of A Multidisciplinary Pain Management Intervention For Rural Adults With Chronic Pain, Cathy Mccoy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chronic noncancerous pain (CNCP) is a major health problem in West Virginia (WV). Legislative barriers have limited primary care providers on the number of CNCP patients they can treat within their practice. Consequently, many patients have lost treatment for their chronic pain and chronic illnesses. Providers have refused to accept new patients with preexisting chronic pain and discharged those within their practices to stay under the limits of the law. A large number of pain patients began to go to local emergency rooms for pain management and untreated chronic illnesses. A multidisciplinary chronic pain management center has the potential to …

Optical injection and detection of charge currents is an alternative to conventional transport and photoemission measurements, avoiding the necessity of invasive contact that may disturb the system being examined. This is a particular concern for analyzing the surface states of topological insulators. In this work one- and two-color sources of photocurrents are isolated and examined in epitaxial thin films of Bi2Se3. We demonstrate that optical excitation and terahertz detection simultaneously captures one- and two-color photocurrent contributions, which has not been required for other material systems. A method is devised to extract the two components, and in doing so each can …

This paper presents updated estimates of source parameters for GW150914, a binary black-hole coalescence event detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in 2015 [Abbott et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 061102 (2016).]. Abbott et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 241102 (2016).] presented parameter estimation of the source using a 13-dimensional, phenomenological precessing-spin model (precessing IMRPhenom) and an 11-dimensional nonprecessing effective-onebody (EOB) model calibrated to numerical-relativity simulations, which forces spin alignment (nonprecessing EOBNR). Here, we present new results that include a 15-dimensional precessingspin waveform model (precessing EOBNR) developed within the EOB formalism. We find good agreement with the parameters …
Plasma-Wave Generation In A Dynamic Spacetime, Huan Yang, Fan Zhang
Plasma-Wave Generation In A Dynamic Spacetime, Huan Yang, Fan Zhang
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
We propose a new electromagnetic (EM)-emission mechanism in magnetized, force-free plasma, which is driven by the evolution of the underlying dynamic spacetime. In particular, the emission power and angular distribution of the emitted fast-magnetosonic and Alfvén waves are separately determined. Previous numerical simulations of binary black hole mergers occurring within magnetized plasma have recorded copious amounts of EM radiation that, in addition to collimated jets, include an unexplained, isotropic component that becomes dominant close to the merger. This raises the possibility of multimessenger gravitational-wave and EM observations on binary black hole systems. The mechanism proposed here provides a candidate analytical …
